Extent And Composition Of Open Coastal Sandplain Plant Communities Of The Cape Cod National Seashore, Evan L. Gwilliam Jan 2004

Extent And Composition Of Open Coastal Sandplain Plant Communities Of The Cape Cod National Seashore, Evan L. Gwilliam

Open Access Master's Theses

Coastal sandplain heathlands and grasslands of the northeastern United States are globally rare habitat types that support a unique assemblage of plants and animals. This habitat is rapidly disappearing due to plant succession following cessation of land use, and coastal processes. I used interpretation of historical maps, aerial photography, GIS, and analysis of field data to examine vegetation dynamics and the impact of historic land use and coastal processes on the current extent and composition of coastal sandplain plant communities found within the Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS). Currently, one third (244 ha) of the coastal heathland and grassland habitat …

Modeling Slope In A Geographic Information System, Robert C. Weih Jr., Tabitha L. Mattson Jan 2004

Modeling Slope In A Geographic Information System, Robert C. Weih Jr., Tabitha L. Mattson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer a cost-effective way to analyze and inventory land and environmental resources. There are many attributes that can be displayed and analyzed in GIS. One of these attributes is slope, which can be calculated from a digital elevation model (DEM). Slope is an important factor in a variety of models used in land analysis as well as land use and management. There are several different mathematical computational algorithms used to calculate slope within a GIS. Eight different slope calculation methods were investigated in this study. These methods were used to calculate slope using 10-m, 30-m, and …

An Academic Library Partnership In The Indian Ocean Region, Julia Gross, Aminath Riyaz Jan 2004

An Academic Library Partnership In The Indian Ocean Region, Julia Gross, Aminath Riyaz

Research outputs pre 2011

The emergence of a global marketplace in education offers valuable partnership opportunities. Libraries in small developing countries often do not have a critical mass of library professionals to share knowledge and to provide advice and collegial support. This case study describes a World Bank funded “Link Institution Arrangement”, which established a library partnership between an academic library in Western Australia and one in the Republic of Maldives. The authors describe the state of libraries and the emerging library profession in the Maldives. They also reveal ways in which the partners explored development issues facing an isolated academic library, shared knowledge …

A Remote Sensing And Gis Investigation Of Urban Growth And Development Patterns In The Metropolitan Region Of Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky., Marc D. Barraclough Jan 2004

A Remote Sensing And Gis Investigation Of Urban Growth And Development Patterns In The Metropolitan Region Of Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky., Marc D. Barraclough

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1958, Lexington, Kentucky became the first city in the nation to implement a growth management strategy that defined the spatial limits of development by restricting access to public services. Now referred to as urban growth boundaries and urban service areas, the use of these containment policies are expanding. This study examines urban growth patterns in the Lexington, Kentucky Metropolitan Region between 1974 and 2000 using remotely sensed satellite images and GIS analysis. Satellite images from 1974 and 2000 were classified into urban/built-up, undeveloped, and water classes. The classified images were then subjected to a post-classification comparison to determine undeveloped …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Personal Naming Practices Of Western North American Indians., Elizabeth L. Compton Jan 2004

An Exploratory Analysis Of Personal Naming Practices Of Western North American Indians., Elizabeth L. Compton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This exploratory analysis examined the sociocultural parameters of 172 Western North American Indian tribes to determine if patterns would emerge in relation to personal naming practices. Five sociocultural parameters (fixity of settlement, dominant form of polygamy, descent pattern, postnuptial residence, and geographical/cultural area) and four personal naming dimensions (nicknames, timing of naming, name bestower, and naming ceremonies) were selected for analysis. Loglinear regressions were conducted. With an alpha level of .05, six significant relationships emerged: 1) nicknaming practices and polygamy, p = .0326, 2) nicknaming practices and descent patterns, p = .0574, 3) timing of naming and the geographical/cultural area, …

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other: Analogizing Ageism To Racism In Employment Discrimination Cases, Rhonda M. Reaves

Journal Publications

The development of anti-discrimination law in the employment context was designed and applied with the elimination of race discrimination in mind. The expansion of anti-discrimination law to older workers has taken place within a legal system that encourages groups to present themselves as "similar to" African Americans. This article explores the difficulty of applying general anti-discrimination principles to the uniquely positioned group of older workers.

Landscape Of The Levant: A Russian View, Theophilus C. Prousis Jan 2004

Landscape Of The Levant: A Russian View, Theophilus C. Prousis

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

European travel literature on the Levant provides one of the most accessible, if not always accurate, sources for studying life and society in the Ottoman world in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The prospects of adventure, trade, and pilgrimage attracted generations of European men and women, many of whom recorded their impressions of places and peoples encountered in the Near East. In view of Russia's proximity to the Ottoman Empire, not to mention Russian religious and cultural ties with the sultan's Eastern Orthodox Christians, travelers from Muscovite and Imperial Russia visited the Ottoman realm, and many of them, drawn to …

Waterpower : A Geophysical And Archaeological Investigation Of The Waterpower System At The West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York, Kimberly A. Finch

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Waterpower: A Geophysical and Archaeological Investigation of the Waterpower System at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York, describes the results of ground penetrating radar surveys and archaeological excavation undertaken by Michigan Technological University (MTU) archaeologists during the summer of 2003 at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York. 2003 constituted MTU's second field season at the foundry. Fieldwork concentrated on the foundry's waterpower system, an intricate network of surface and subsurface drains, races, flumes, waterwheels, turbines, dams, and ponds that powered operations and regulated water flow throughout the site. Archaeologists utilized non-destructive geophysical technology, which expedited survey, …

Offering Buddha A Coke, Alice Fletcher

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Through my own life experiences and also through observing those of others, I have become sensitive to the conflicts and transformations that occur when widely dissimilar cultures come into contact. Recently I have observed how the owners of Tom Ka Thai Restaurant*, where I have been working for about a year, have carved out a place for themselves -- a place to negotiate new identities and meanings, within the dominant, northeast Florida culture that surrounds them.
