The Relationship Between High Inflation And Output In Brazil From 1975 To 2002, Roberto Nepomuceno Bento Jan 2004

The Relationship Between High Inflation And Output In Brazil From 1975 To 2002, Roberto Nepomuceno Bento

Honors Capstones

The macroeconomic policies undertaken by Brazilian policymakers during the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s—namely high growth of money supply, huge budget deficits, and the excessive use of inflation tax—created an inflation crisis comparable to Germany’s hyperinflationary period. Consequently, the effects of high inflation on different Brazilian economic variables have become interesting and challenging subjects to macroeconomists. This paper attempts to describe the effect of high inflation on output in Brazil between 1975 and 2002. By running a simple linear regression model, I find that, unlike many other studies, there is a positive relationship between inflation and output in Brazil during …

Offering A Frame To Put Experience In: Margaret Wise Brown Presents Ideas As Opportunities To Very Young Children, Peter Shea Jan 2004

Offering A Frame To Put Experience In: Margaret Wise Brown Presents Ideas As Opportunities To Very Young Children, Peter Shea

Collected Papers of Peter Shea

In this essay I discuss Margaret Wise Brown’s picture books as tools for provoking philosophic reflection in young children and as meditations on the situation of the very young child and on the reflective work of the young child at a time when language is still new and fresh. Some of her work concerns the most fundamental negotiation in personal philosophy—the negotiation of an attitude to the outside world, to those realities beyond one's control, beyond one's zone of comfort.

Computer Technology For The Future Of Sw Asiatic Botany, R. J. Pankhurst Jan 2004

Computer Technology For The Future Of Sw Asiatic Botany, R. J. Pankhurst

Turkish Journal of Botany

Much computer software already exists for floristic and monographic studies. Database software can hold all the data required for a Flora, and can process it much more accurately. The fundamental data tables are those for names, authorities, people, specimens, bibliography, geography and distribution. To these can be added other data such as descriptions, keys, images, maps, chromosomes and vernacular names. The same data system can be used for collection management and making herbarium labels. It is very important to use data standards such as for books, journals and authorities. Computerised descriptions and keys can also be constructed and held in …

A Brief Ethnography Of Magnolia Plantation: Planning For Cane River Creole National Historical Park, Muriel (Miki) Crespi Jan 2004

A Brief Ethnography Of Magnolia Plantation: Planning For Cane River Creole National Historical Park, Muriel (Miki) Crespi

United States National Park Service: Publications

Interest in the people with traditional associations to Magnolia plantation, one of the two plantations incorporated into Cane River Creole National Historical Park (CARI), and in the development of the new park’s General Management Plan prompted this brief ethnographic study. We hoped to bring diverse voices to planning dialogues about resources, interpretation, and alternatives by walking the grounds that associated people consider culturally meaningful and by interviewing ethnically different peoples individually or in groups. Our interest focused particularly on the associated peoples who perceive park resources as essential to their development and continued identity as culturally distinct people. The same …

Dwelling On Common Ground: Scientific And Family Narratives Of Change In Natural Landscapes, Damian Craniak Ph.D.

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Can mapping past and current changes in prairie landscapes in relation to historical shifts in human culture suggest promising directions for efforts to restore the health of grasslands and other natural communities? During the last 20,000 years the Land shifted and altered; during the past 10,000 years Life moved and migrated; and during the past 5,000 years natural and human Law has been turned and twisted to produce changes unanticipated in the history of the world. In the past 500 years these changes have quickened as we have changed ourselves from foragers into fur traders, and then into farmers, foresters, …

An Overview Of Shorebird Migration In The Eastern Rainwater Basin, Nebraska, Joel G. Jorgensen Jan 2004

An Overview Of Shorebird Migration In The Eastern Rainwater Basin, Nebraska, Joel G. Jorgensen

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The Rainwater Basin (RWB) has received limited attention as an important stopover area for migrant shorebirds because of an absence of basic survey data. Here I present the first comprehensive inventory of shorebird migration for the eastern Rainwater Basin (eRWB). These data document the importance of this region as a stopover site for migrants and will serve as a baseline for future monitoring efforts. During five years of spring and three years of fall surveys that covered a majority of wetlands in the eRWB, an average of 23,700 and 5,581 shorebirds were recorded in spring and fall, respectively. Of 38 …

Mute Swans And Their Chesapeake Bay Habitats:Proceedings Of A Symposium, Matthew C. Perry Jan 2004

Mute Swans And Their Chesapeake Bay Habitats:Proceedings Of A Symposium, Matthew C. Perry

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The symposium “Mute Swans and their Chesapeake Bay Habitats,” held on June 7, 2001, provided a forum for biologists and managers to share research findings and management ideas concerning the exotic and invasive mute swan (Cygnus olor). This species has been increasing in population size and is considered by many to be a problem in regard to natural food resources in the Bay that are used by native waterfowl during the winter months. Other persons, however, feel that resource managers are attempting to create a problem to justify more killing of waterfowl by hunters. Some persons also believe …

Role and Mission Statement

The Role of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, chartered by the Legislature in 1869, is that part of the University of Nebraska system which serves as both the land-grant and the comprehensive public University for the State of Nebraska. Those responsible for its origins recognized the value of combining the breadth of a comprehensive University with the professional and outreach orientation of the land grant University, thus establishing a campus which has evolved to become the flagship campus of the University of Nebraska. UNL works cooperatively with the other three campuses and Central …

"The House Was Quiet And The World Was Calm The Reader Became The Book" Reading The Bill Of Rights As A Poem: An Essay In Honor Of The Fiftieth Anniversary Of Brown V Board Of Education, Burt Neuborne

Faculty Articles

The article argues that the Bill of Rights displays a coherent structure similar to the structure underlying a great poem. The vertical structure begins with the articulation in the 1st Amendment of the Founders’ ideal polity, continues in the 2nd and 3rd Amendments with protection of the ideal polity against military overthrow, moves in the 4th through 8th Amendments to protection against civilian attacks on the polity by chronologically summarizing the criminal justice process, and providing protections against its abuse in the 4th (investigation and arrest), 5th (interrogation); 6th (charging and adjudication); and 8th (punishment), and closes in the 9th …

Citizenship, Identity, And Transnational Migration: Arab Immigrants To The Us, Caroline R. Nagel, Lynn A. Staeheli Jan 2004

Citizenship, Identity, And Transnational Migration: Arab Immigrants To The Us, Caroline R. Nagel, Lynn A. Staeheli

Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the changing relationships between identities, citizenship and the state in the context of globalisation. We first examine the ways in which scholars discuss changes in the ways in which citizenship and political identity are expressed in the context of international migration. We argue that much of the discussion of transnationalism and diaspora cling to an assumption that citizenship remains an important—though not defining—element of identity. Our position, by contrast, is that migration is one of a number of processes that transform the relationship between citizenship and identity. More specifically, we argue that …

Creative Preaching: How Multi-Sensory Preaching Connects The Word Of God To The Twenty-First Century Culture, Mark D. Cummins Jan 2004

Creative Preaching: How Multi-Sensory Preaching Connects The Word Of God To The Twenty-First Century Culture, Mark D. Cummins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this project is to identify the benefits of creative preaching for the purpose of connecting the 21st century to the Word of God. The project will reveal the media reformation that brought about a cultural shift from hearing words to seeing words. By examining the scriptures, the reader will discover that creative preaching through multiple sensory inputs is not a new idea. Finally, research-based practical advice and transitional resources will be given to help today’s preachers creatively connect the Word of God with the 21st century.

Reflections On Teaching In A Catholic High School: A Qualitative Case Study, Daniel Blout Jan 2004

Reflections On Teaching In A Catholic High School: A Qualitative Case Study, Daniel Blout

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study participates in this ongoing scholarly conversation regarding the value of Catholic schools in the life ministry of the Catholic Church. By examining the understanding that lay teachers have of their responsibility to the Catholic identity and the faith formation of students in Catholic schools as articulated in the literature of leadership of the Catholic Church, this study examines some of the ways that lay teachers help maintain the Catholic identity of the school and how these teachers engage in the religious mission of Catholic schools. This qualitative study was purposely designed to engage and invite the 58 …

Learning To Be Free: The Print Media Of Cotonou, Benin, Stephen Urbanski Jan 2004

Learning To Be Free: The Print Media Of Cotonou, Benin, Stephen Urbanski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Benin, a West African republic of six million people, has had multiple influences shape its cultural and historical landscape, including the French colonization, a multiplicity of dictators, and a 17-year period of Marxism. During the early years of the colonization, the print media was particularly dissident, always advocating an end to the colonization, which greatly disrupted the regions core pan-African values. In 1990, the National Conference heralded a conversion to democracy as well as a boom in the number of privately owned newspapers.

This dissertation addresses at the concept of freedom and how it is defined from both a Western …
