Using Spatial Statistics To Model The Spatial Structure Of Data In Remote Sensing Change Detection: The Case Of Urban Sprawl., Jeffrey Scott Spiker Jan 2004

Using Spatial Statistics To Model The Spatial Structure Of Data In Remote Sensing Change Detection: The Case Of Urban Sprawl., Jeffrey Scott Spiker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Spatial structure in remotely sensed imagery is shown to impact the change detection procedure. Methods to incorporate spatial statistics into correlation-based and regression-based change detection that control for the spatial structure in this data are proposed. These procedures are presented by means of an urban change detection case study utilizing Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+ imagery in the area to the west of the Baltimore, MD I Washington D.C. metropolitan area between 1989 and 2002. In the correlation-based analysis, the results show that the use of point-to-point correlation is often inappropriate in the examination of spatial datasets. In addition, spatial …

Kinship Migration To Northwestern Virginia, 1785-1815: The Myth Of The Southern Frontiersman, Philip W. Sturm Jan 2004

Kinship Migration To Northwestern Virginia, 1785-1815: The Myth Of The Southern Frontiersman, Philip W. Sturm

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For nearly 100 years American historians, with few exceptions, have maintained that migration of colonists to the trans-Appalachian frontier was a communal experience for those from New England and Northern regions but that the Southern frontiersman represented a non-communal, individualistic spirit of colonization. This dissertation traces the migration and settlement patterns of the earliest colonists along the northwestern Virginia frontier, the area organized as Wood County in 1799, from three Eastern regions, New England, the Middle Atlantic, and the Northern Neck of Virginia. It determines that emigrants from all regions migrated cohesively and sequentially in large kinship/neighbor groups and that …

Same Place Yet Different Worlds: A Gis And Society Perspective On Kenyan Peri-Urbanization., Francis Tama Koti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examines Kenyan peri-urbanization using a GIS and Society conceptual framework. The study integrates historical and cultural peri-urban experiences of local communities into a conventional GIS to enhance an analysis of uneven development of residential space in Athi River town, Kenya. The research is guided by three broad objectives: (1) understanding how GIS is impacting Kenyan urban geographic research; (2) building a GIS to study uneven development of residential space, and; (3) integrating community local knowledge into a GIS-based analysis of uneven residential development in a peri-urban setting. The research methodology combines a variety of culturally sensitive but complimentary …

Beyond Rights: Legal Process And Ethnic Conflicts, Elana A. Baylis Jan 2004

Beyond Rights: Legal Process And Ethnic Conflicts, Elana A. Baylis

Michigan Journal of International Law

Unresolved ethnic conflicts threaten the stability and the very existence of multi-ethnic states. Ethnically divided states have struggled to build structural safeguards against such disputes into their political and legal systems, but these safeguards have not been able to prevent all conflict. Accordingly, multi-ethnic states facing persistent ethnic conflicts need to develop effective dispute resolution systems for resolving those conflicts. This presents an important question: what kinds of processes and institutions might enable ethnic groups to resolve their conflicts with each other and the state? This Article explores that question, reviewing the interdisciplinary literature on ethnic conflicts, the legal literature …

Preventing Genocide: The Role Of The United Nations, Stanislas Kamanzi

ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law

I would like to start with a self explanatory and worthwhile quote from His Late Majesty Haile Selassie which reads as follows: "Throughout History it has been the inaction of those who could have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better, the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most, that has made it possible for evil to triumph."

Multiculturalism And The Future Of Tribal Sovereignty, Scott C. Idleman Jan 2004

Multiculturalism And The Future Of Tribal Sovereignty, Scott C. Idleman

Faculty Publications

American Indian tribes would appear to be natural constituents and beneficiaries of the multiculturalism movement. Their members are generally conceptualized as racial or ethnic minorities; they have endured social and legal oppression and continue to encounter structural and even intentional discrimination; and, not least importantly, they possess genuinely different cultures and consequently add diverse perspectives to society. Despite this apparent fit, this Article questions the extent to which tribes and tribal members actually should align themselves with multicultural proponents and initiatives. The basis for this inquiry is that, unlike other societal subgroups, each recognized tribe is a distinct geopolitical entity …

Validation Of A Food Frequency Questionnaire To Assess Macro And Micro-Nutrient Intake Among South Asians In The United Kingdom, Leena Sevak, Punam Mangtani, Valerie Mccormack, Dee Bhakta, Tashmin Khamis, Isabel Dos Santos Silva Jan 2004

Validation Of A Food Frequency Questionnaire To Assess Macro And Micro-Nutrient Intake Among South Asians In The United Kingdom, Leena Sevak, Punam Mangtani, Valerie Mccormack, Dee Bhakta, Tashmin Khamis, Isabel Dos Santos Silva

Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa

Background: The South Asian population is one of the largest minority ethnic groups in the United Kingdom (UK), forming 2.7% of the UK population. Risk of diseases such as CHD, NIDDM is high in South Asians and risk of cancer low in this population compared both to the native UK population and other migrant groups. It is useful to investigate the experience of disease and dietary exposures for aetiological clues in South Asians. The FFQ was designed for a population-based case-control study of diet and breast cancer.

Aims: To validate a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess macro- and micronutrient …

Utah's Southwest, Robert J. Johnson, R. Douglas Ramsey Jan 2004

Utah's Southwest, Robert J. Johnson, R. Douglas Ramsey

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

This map of Utah's Southwest features a cartographic illustration created by draping four cross-blended hypsometric tint ramps over a grayscale hillshade. A hypsometric tint ramp is essentially a blend of one or more colors that is associated with an elevation range. A cross-blended hypsometric tint derived image consists of two or more color ramps with at least one ramp presenting the terrain in a "dry" condition and the other in a "moist" or vegetated condition. The addition of a satellite image derived vegetation index allows vegetation colors to appear where the terrain is vegetated irrespective of elevation.

Above And Below The Water: Social/Ecological Transformation In Northwest Newfoundland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Richard L. Haedrich, Cynthia M. Duncan Jan 2004

Above And Below The Water: Social/Ecological Transformation In Northwest Newfoundland, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Richard L. Haedrich, Cynthia M. Duncan

Sociology

Marine fisheries and fishing societies develop around the resources provided by a particular ecosystem. As they exploit these resources, fisheries transform the ecosystem, which pushes fishery and society to adapt in turn. This process is illustrated by fisheries, ecological and social data tracking dramatic changes on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula and its adjacent marine ecosystem, the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. There a longstanding fishery for cod and other groundfish collapsed in the 1990s, and was replaced by fisheries targeting invertebrates. The new invertebrate fisheries have different socioeconomic characteristics than the former groundfish fisheries. The shift in target species reflects deep …

Near Eastern Sources For The Palace Of Alkinoos, Erwin F. Cook Jan 2004

Near Eastern Sources For The Palace Of Alkinoos, Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

The last quarter century of archaeological discoveries have significantly enriched and nuanced our understanding of interactions between the Greek world and the Levant during the Greek Archaic period (conventionally defined as 776-479 B.C.E.). They have also allowed us to construct an increasingly detailed model explaining the diffusion of knowledge from Mesopotamia to Greece at this time. In addition, advances in our understanding of oral cultures, and the role of oral narrative traditions within them have cast valuable new light on the ways in which the Homeric epics appropriate, adapt, and preserve cultural knowledge. The palace of Alkinoos, described in Book …

Hortaliza: A Youth "Nutrition" Garden In Southwest Detroit, Kameshwari Pothukuchi Jan 2004

Hortaliza: A Youth "Nutrition" Garden In Southwest Detroit, Kameshwari Pothukuchi

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

This paper documents a youth garden that was developed in 2000 through a university-community partnership in a low-income, predominantly Latino neighborhood in southwest Detroit. It involved four community-based organizations and several residents -- youth among them -- from the neighborhood, in garden planning, set-up, and management. Kids grew vegetables of different kinds to take home and ate healthy snacks at the garden. They learned about the importance of vegetables and fruits to healthy diets, the nutritional value of particular vegetables, and how to grow vegetables. At the end of the season, we documented increased interest among kids in eating fruits …

Selling Small And Smart: The Future Of The Sustainable Enterprise, Sandra Rothenberg Jan 2004

Selling Small And Smart: The Future Of The Sustainable Enterprise, Sandra Rothenberg

Books

Much of the popular management thought on sustainability focuses increasing operational efficiency and innovation of more environmentally benign products and processes. Some would argue, however, that this is not enough to become a sustainable society because it does not address levels of consumption. As a means to address reduced consumption as an important component of sustainability, this paper will outline the experiences of three companies that have adopted business models that help customers purchase less of their traditional products. Drawing lessons from the experiences of these three companies, the paper will then outline the key challenges in adopting this business …
