Animal Bones From Sondum (27012) Sandoy, Faroe Islands 200 Season Collection, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Seth Brewington, Sophia Perdikaris, Colin Amundsen

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Introduction

This paper reports on analysis of animal bones collect in 2000 by the Faroese Museum from a stratified but eroding beach front cliff in on the island of Sandoy. The site designation is Sondum, 27012 and the bone materials have been kindly sent to the CUNY laboratories for analysis by the excavator Simun Arge. While conditions of bone preservation are not as good as at the Undir Junkarinsfløtti locality to the SW across the embayment, and sample size is much smaller, a substantial amount of bone was recovered from datable which adds to our understanding of early economic patterns …

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis Jan 2004

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis

Publications

In the long march from manual training, the subject which today we call technology education has always had to contend with the question of its legitimacy as valid school knowledge. In this regard, it shares a similar history of struggle with other subjects whose initial entry into the curriculum was based on a utilitarian rather than an academic rationale. Goodson (1983) documents such cases (e.g. geography and biology) showing how in their struggle for acceptance, the primary strategy of advocates was to try to enhance the academic bona fides of their subject. He explained that utilitarian knowledge is associated with …

Blue-Collar Work, Career, And Success: Occupational Narratives Of Sisu, Kristen Lucas, Patrice M. Buzzanel Jan 2004

Blue-Collar Work, Career, And Success: Occupational Narratives Of Sisu, Kristen Lucas, Patrice M. Buzzanel

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examined underground iron ore miners’ occupational narratives to uncover how their stories socialize miners into blue-collar careers and reinforce their work identities. Through the root theme of sisu (Finnish for inner determination), underground miners create a status hierarchy that is used to construct a sense of pride around their work and to establish milestones of success for themselves and others in their workgroup. Furthermore, they communicatively construct exemplars that guide their performance and decisions during the unfolding of their work experiences. Their discourses provide alternatives to white-collar conceptualizations and practices of careers and success.

State V. Colosimo: Minnesota Anglers’ Freedom From Unreasonable Searches And Seizures Becomes “The One That Got Away”, Edwin J. Butterfoss, Joseph L. Daly

William Mitchell Law Review

This article examines the various opinions in the Colosimo case, including the opinion of the Minnesota Court of Appeals (which was reversed by the supreme court), as well as the majority, concurring, and dissenting opinions of the supreme court. The article provides a brief background of how the issue of stops and inspections by conservation officers has been dealt with in other jurisdictions before turning to a critique of the Minnesota Supreme Court's decision in Colosimo, which the authors consider far too expansive. The decision in Colosimo undermines the right of citizens of Minnesota to be free from invasions of …

Is The Acpa A Safe Haven For Trademark Infringers? - Rethinking The Unilateral Application Of The Lanham Act, 22 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 655 (2004), Jinku Hwang

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) was enacted in 1999 as a response to international disputes over Internet domain names because according to the Congress’ point of view, courts could not successfully protected American businesses in cases where nothing more that the registration of a trademark or its variation in a domain name had occurred. This article analyzes recent court decisions regarding domain name disputes after the enactment of ACPA focusing on reverse domain name hijacking in international, trademark related and gTLD disputes. The author argues that the in rem jurisdiction provided by the ACPA and the consequent extraterritorial effect …

Lessons For The Hague: Internet Jurisdiction In Contract And Tort Cases In The European Community And The United States, 23 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1 (2004), Moritz Keller

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

With the increasing use of the Internet, all on-line users, web site owners, e-commerce companies and consumers alike, feel the need to be able to rely on clear standards for a potential contract or tort lawsuit following the Internet presence that could lead to multinational litigation. This goal could be achieved if the negotiations of the Hague Convention on international jurisdiction and enforcement of foreign judgments in civil and commercial matters succeed in harmonizing the rules of the different legal systems around the globe, or at least create a minimum standard for legal cases which would benefit greatly e-commerce and …

Geo-Location Technologies And Other Means Of Placing Borders On The 'Borderless' Internet, 23 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 101 (2004), Dan Jerker B. Svantenson

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Until recently it was considered impossible or at least pointless to attempt to identify the actual geographic location of Internet users in the online environment. However, this is changing and, although extremely accurate geographical identifiers do not exist, more geo-location technologies are used to track the location of the Internet users for a variety of reasons such as fraud detection, authentication, content targeting, security and network efficiency, conditioning access and legal compliance. The article distinguishes between hard protection provided by geo-location technologies and soft protection provided by non-technical means. It then proceeds in presenting and examining the geo-location technologies, sophisticated …

Detailed Spatially Distributed Geothermal Heat-Flow Data For Modeling Of Basal Temperatures And Meltwater Production Beneath The Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Jens-Ove Näslund, Peter Jansson, James L. Fastook, Jesse Johnson, Leif Andersson Jan 2004

Detailed Spatially Distributed Geothermal Heat-Flow Data For Modeling Of Basal Temperatures And Meltwater Production Beneath The Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Jens-Ove Näslund, Peter Jansson, James L. Fastook, Jesse Johnson, Leif Andersson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Accurate modeling of ice sheets requires proper information on boundary conditions, including the geothermal heat flow (or heat-flow density (HFD)). Traditionally, one uniform HFD value is adopted for the entire modeled domain. We have calculated a distributed, high-resolution HFD dataset for an approximate core area (Sweden and Finland) of the Scandinavian ice sheet, and imbedded this within lower-resolution data published for surrounding regions. Within the Last Glacial Maximum ice margin, HFD varies with a factor of as much as 2.8 (HFD values ranging between 30 and 83mWm–2), with an average of 49mWm–2. This average value is 17% higher than 42mWm–2, …

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of The Pilbara Region, Western Australia, A M E Van Vreeswyk, K A. Leighton, A L. Payne, P Hennig

Technical Bulletins

The inventory and condition survey of the Pilbara region, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia between 1995 and 1999, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed covers about 181 723 km². Seven …

Siviculture And Management Strategies Applicable To Southern Hardwoods, William Conner, Ray R. Hicks Jr, Robert C. Kellison, David Vanlear Jan 2004

Siviculture And Management Strategies Applicable To Southern Hardwoods, William Conner, Ray R. Hicks Jr, Robert C. Kellison, David Vanlear

Publications

Southern hardwood forests stretch from the Virginias to Florida and from the mid-Atlantic to Missouri. They can generally be grouped into upland forests and bottomland forests. The upland hardwood forests of the southern region are usually associated with the mountainous topography of the Appalachians and Ozarks. Bottomland hardwoods are found along the floodplains of larger rivers in the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains, including the Mississippi River floodplain. Southern hardwood forests are owned by a variety of governmental and private owners, but the vast majority of owners are nonindustrial private individuals. These owners seldom engage in intensive forest management, often …

Faithful Transgressions, Laura L. Bush Jan 2004

Faithful Transgressions, Laura L. Bush

All USU Press Publications

The central issue Bush finds in these works is how their authors have dealt with the authority of Mormon Church leaders. As she puts it in her preface, "I use the phrase 'faithful transgression' to describe moments in the texts when each writer, explicitly or implicitly, commits herself in writing to trust her own ideas and authority over official religious authority while also conceiving of and depicting herself to be a 'faithful' member of the Church." Bush recognizes her book as her own act of faithful transgression. Writing it involved wrestling, she states, "with my own deeply ingrained religious beliefs …

Thinking Outside The (Bricks-And-Mortar) Box(Es): Using Cyberspace Technology To Reconceptualize Schooling And Community In The Face Of Resegregation, Jonathan D. Becker

Educational Leadership Publications

As the 50th anniversary of the landmark "Brown v. Board of Education" decision arrives, a notably gesellschaftliche (individualist, freedom-oriented, rationalist) paradigm in the education policy agenda prevails. That is to say, in the wake of a series of Supreme Court decisions and the proliferation of publicly funded, ethnocentric charter schools in the past few decades, this country has moved away from "Brown's" celebrated ideals and closer to the old idea of "separate but equal." Furthermore, the disconnect is occurring along racial and cultural lines. Thus, if we are to achieve the benefits of diversity in schooling and create a more …

"The Hardest Worked River In The World": The 1962 Bear River Project, Utah And Idaho, Robert Parson

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Arising on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains in northeastern Utah, Bear River travels five hundred miles through three states and ten counties in Utah,Wyoming, and Idaho. The river’s route traverses from mountain slopes, through several valleys, deep canyons and gorges before terminating at the Great Salt Lake, only ninety miles from where it begins. This unique geological and geographical mix, as well as interstate politics have complicated efforts to fully harness its waters.
