Asset Mapping: Community Geography Project

The purpose of this capstone project was to explore citizen participation training efforts from a variety of perspectives in the Portland metropolitan region. The service are of those efforts were mapped against the efforts are intended to serve. In addition, this information was assed in relationship to neighborhoods in the region where there is known to be significant citizen participation and neighborhoods that are less active. To bring this data together we used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to combine and map the information gathered. Simply put, a GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better …

Where The Palm Grows: The Ybor City Revitalization Project, Alexandra Fitos Apr 2004

Where The Palm Grows: The Ybor City Revitalization Project, Alexandra Fitos

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly there has been a new model for inner-city redevelopment and revitalization, in which an urban area is commodified and turned into a festival market and an exclusive shopping district referred to as a shopertainment area. Ybor City in Tampa, Florida, is typical of this new model of redevelopment where urban entertainment and shopping with an active nightclub and dinning scene, entices new visitors to area, and most recently a growing residential population. The residential population that is developing is one of exclusivity and privilege, exceedingly far removed from Ybor City's humble beginnings as a company town or the blighted …

Inmigración Marroquí En Granada = Morrocan Immigration In Granada, Emily C M O’Neill Apr 2004

Inmigración Marroquí En Granada = Morrocan Immigration In Granada, Emily C M O’Neill

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In today’s world of increased globalization and great economic disparities, the discussion of immigration has become all the more controversial, complicated, and relevant. I believe in the right to immigrate. The nation into which one is born strongly determines the destiny of the individual. I was born in the United States, a rich democratic country and subsequently may have greater opportunities than someone from an impoverished nation, this does not mean, however that I have more right to life than the latter. It is a sad reality that people are forced to leave their homeland in search of a better …

A Value Focused Thinking Model For The Development And Selection Of Electrical Energy Source Alternatives At Military Installations, Gregory T. Schanding Mar 2004

A Value Focused Thinking Model For The Development And Selection Of Electrical Energy Source Alternatives At Military Installations, Gregory T. Schanding

Theses and Dissertations

Electrical power on military installations is vital for mission accomplishment. Most installations obtain electrical power from a local commercial utility. Although commercial power service has a very low interruption rate, the threat of a sustained power outage resulting from a terrorist act or a natural disaster is of concern. The military should posture itself to prevent such power outages and prepare to mitigate the adverse effects associated with the loss of power. This thesis presents a Value Focused Thinking approach to the development of a decision analysis model to assist a decision maker at a military installation in the generation …

Un Mandat, Deux Politiques : Les Effets De L’Inégalité De La Politique Mandataire Française En Syrie Et Au Liban, Catherine Glenn Ellis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the early years of the twentieth century, the Ottoman Empire began to crumble due to external wars and internal rebellions dating from about 1908. Due to European influence at the end of the First World War, the Ottoman Empire lost much of its territory in 1919, including Palestine and Syria, comprised of modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Iraq. The European powers incited rebellion among the Middle Eastern peoples to the end of aiding their cause in the portions of the war fought in the Middle East. In return, they promised the Arabs independent nations; in the Treaty of …

Modeling Time Space Prism Constraints In A Developing Country Context, Ram S. Nehra Mar 2004

Modeling Time Space Prism Constraints In A Developing Country Context, Ram S. Nehra

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent developments in microsimulation modeling of activity and travel demand have called for the explicit recognition of time-space constraints under which individuals perform their activity and travel patterns. The estimation of time-space prism vertex locations, i.e., the perceived time constraints, is an important development in this context. Stochastic frontier modeling methodology offers a suitable framework for modeling and identifying the expected vertex locations of time space prisms within which people execute activity-travel patterns. In this work, stochastic frontier models of time space prism vertex locations are estimated for samples drawn from a household travel survey conducted in 2001 in the …

Ammonia Flux At The Air/Water Interface Of Tampa Bay, Constance Anne Mizak Mar 2004

Ammonia Flux At The Air/Water Interface Of Tampa Bay, Constance Anne Mizak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An ammonia emissions inventory discovered that 90% of the ammonia emitted from Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Polk counties, originated from the latter two counties. This finding is significant and suggests that a substantial portion of the ammonia deposited to Tampa Bay is transported with easterly air masses.

Ammonia and ammonium concentrations at the coastal Gandy Bridge site were seasonally and diurnally consistent, but the rural Sydney site showed greater variability. It was determined that wind direction was the most influential parameter affecting the Gandy Bridge site, which supports the hypothesis that an advection of ammonia from the east is a major …

The Poor State Of Health Care Quality In The U.S.: Is Malpractice Liability Part Of The Problem Or Part Of The Solution?, Charles Silver Mar 2004

The Poor State Of Health Care Quality In The U.S.: Is Malpractice Liability Part Of The Problem Or Part Of The Solution?, Charles Silver

ExpressO

The belief that malpractice lawsuits impede efforts to improve health care quality by encouraging providers to hide mistakes is the conventional wisdom among patient safety advocates and scholars. It also provides the normative basis for efforts currently proceeding at the state and federal levels to curtail medical malpractice exposure. Groups pressing for tort reform, including the American Medical Association, contend that when doctors and other providers are insulated from liability, patients will be better protected from harm.

This article canvasses the evidence bearing on the connection between malpractice exposure and health care quality. Some of this evidence, such as the …

The Pueblitos Of Palluche Canyon: An Examination Of The Ethnic Affiliation Of The Pueblito Inhabitants And Results Of Archaeological Survey At La 9073, La 10732 And La 86895, New Mexico, Leslie-Lynne Sinkey

Theses and Dissertations

The small, above-ground masonry structures of northwestern New Mexico called "pueblitos" first came to the attention of anthropologists in over a century ago. In 1920, the noted archaeologist A.V. Kidder hypothesized that these masonry structures might have been built by Puebloan refugees fleeing Spanish reprisals in the wake of the Spanish reconquest of New Mexico after the Pueblo Revolt, and he proposed that this hypothesis be tested. Over the next several decades, however, the hypothesis remained untested, but it became both accepted as established fact and the basis for most anthropological, archaeological, and historical reconstructions of Navajo history and cultural …

Weblogs And The Technology Lifecycle: Context, Geek-Chic And Personal Community, James M. Milne Mar 2004

Weblogs And The Technology Lifecycle: Context, Geek-Chic And Personal Community, James M. Milne

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Weblogging is an Internet social practice that became known as a technology. This project investigated weblogging (blogging) as an example of a media technology that arose under particular historical circumstances. To investigate this, blogs were examined in detail, participant-observation was used to construct and run a blog, and practicing bloggers were interviewed. The study found that blogging, like all technology, originates within existing social practice (context); has a diffusion process that causes it to spread between people (Geek-Chic); and leads to certain social outcomes (Personal Community). This is seen as a general pattern for the lifecycle of technology, serving to …

Context-Sensitive Data Structures Supporting Software Development In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jamie Payton, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christine Julien Mar 2004

Context-Sensitive Data Structures Supporting Software Development In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jamie Payton, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Christine Julien

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Context-aware computing, an emerging paradigm in which applications sense and adapt their behavior to changes in their operational environment, is key to de-veloping dependable agent-based software systems for use in the often unpredictable settings of ad hoc net-works. However, designing an application agent which gathers, maintains, and adapts to context can be a diffi-cult undertaking in an open and continuously changing environment, even for a seasoned programmer. Our goal is to simplify the programming task by hiding such issues from the programmer, allowing one to quickly and reliably produce a context-aware application agent for use in large-scale ad hoc networks. …
