Teaching For Change: The Leadership In Environmental Education Partnership, Paul Faulstich Jan 2004

Teaching For Change: The Leadership In Environmental Education Partnership, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Humans are transforming earth's landscape from a natural matrix with pockets of civilization to just the opposite. Most of us realize that this pattern is not sustainable. I live and work in Claremont, California, a charming college town in the midst of suburban sprawl. The town has a central village of terminally tasteful, overpriced bungalows nestled in the shade of tall, largely exotic trees. Indeed, most of the landscape of this "city of trees and Ph.D.s" has been imported; only a remnant parcel of coastal sage scrub that the Claremont Colleges have reluctantly preserved remains.

An Unusual Lava Cave From Ol Doinyo Lengai, Tanzania, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Frederick Belton

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

A new type of lava cave is described from the summit crater of Ol Doinyo Lengai, a unique active carbonatite volcano in Tanzania. This and other similar caves on Ol Doinyo Lengai are formed by thermal erosion and aqueous dissolution of otherwise solid spatter cones. Meteoritic water and endogenous condensates act to form speleothems of complex mineralogy up to 3 m in length. We propose the new classification of “polygenetic spatter cone cave”.

Guide For A Wildlife Education Program Emphasizing Environmental Concepts, Marylou Felch

Theses Digitization Project

This project is based on a need for creating wildlife education programs that can effectively enable young children to acquire wildlife awareness, wildlife knowledge, and positive attitudes with respect to wildlife and the environment. Additionally, there is a need in the field of environmental education to expand the ideas taught through classroom environmental education to other locations. This project aims to meet these needs by providing a wildlife education program that combines the field of wildlife education with the field of environmental education.

A Split Model For Extraction Of Subpixel Impervious Surface Information, Yeqiao Wang, Xinsheng Zhang Jan 2004

A Split Model For Extraction Of Subpixel Impervious Surface Information, Yeqiao Wang, Xinsheng Zhang

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

This paper introduces a Subpixel Proportional Land cover Information Transformation (SPLIT) model to extract proportions of impervious surfaces in urban and suburban areas. High spatial resolution airborne Digital Multispectral Videography (DMSV) data provided subpixel information for Landsat TM data. The SPLIT model employed a Modularized Artificial Neural Network (MANN) to integrate multi-sensor remote sensing data and to extract proportions of impervious surfaces and other types of land cover within TM pixels. Through a control unit, the MANN was able to decompose a complex task into multiple subtasks by using a group of sub-networks. The SPLIT model identified spectral relations between …

Ecological Restoration As A Strategic Framework For Invasive Species Management Planning: The University Of Wisconsin Experience, Steve Glass

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

The UW-Madison Arboretum uses an evolving, strategic approach to invasive species management that aims to develop comprehensive, integrated protocols for removing pest plants and subsequently replacing them with appropriate native species. We seek to provide managers with the decision, making tools to develop appropriate tactics to encourage native plants and discourage pest plants. This approach relies upon: 1) a rigorous invasive species risk assessment that yields an action priority ranking matrix; and 2) invasive species management conducted within an ecological restoration framework; and 3) incorporation of research findings into management actions in an adaptive management feedback loop. I use Phalaris arundinacea …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

In many subsurface situations where human health and environmental quality are at risk (e.g., contaminant hydrogeology, petroleum extraction, carbon sequestration, etc.), scientists and engineers are being asked by federal agency decision-makers to predict the fate of chemical species under conditions where both reactions and transport are processes of first-order importance.

In 2002, a working group (WG) was formed by representatives of the U.S. Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency,Department of Energy,Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Department of Agriculture, and Army Engineer Research and Development Center to assess the role of reactive transport modeling (RTM) in addressing these situations. Specifically, the goals of the WG …

Date List X contains an annotated listing of 213 radiocarbon dates determined on samples from marine and terrestrial environments. The marine samples were collected from the East Greenland, Iceland, Spitzbergen, and Norwegian margins, Baffin Bay, and Labrador Sea. The terrestrial samples were collected from Vestfirdir, Iceland and Baffin Island. The samples were submitted by INSTAAR and researchers affiliated with INSTAAR's Micropaleontology Laboratory under the direction of Dr.’s John T. Andrews and Anne E. Jennings. All of the dates from marine sediment cores were determined from either shells or foraminifera (both benthic and planktic). All dates were obtained by the Accelerator …

A Comparison Of Aviris And Landsat For Land Use Classification At The Urban Fringe, Rutherford V. Platt, Alexander F.H. Goetz Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Aviris And Landsat For Land Use Classification At The Urban Fringe, Rutherford V. Platt, Alexander F.H. Goetz

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

In this study we tested whether AVIRIS data allowed for improved land use classification over synthetic Landsat ETM+ data for a location on the urban-rural fringe of Colorado. After processing the AVIRIS image and creating a synthetic Landsat image, we used standard classification and post-classification procedures to compare the data sources for land use mapping. We found that, for this location, AVIRIS holds modest, but real, advantages over Landsat for the classification of heterogeneous and vegetated land uses. Furthermore, this advantage comes almost entirely from the large number of sensor spectral bands rather than the high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).

Transmission In Transition: Analyzing California's Proposed Electricity Transmission Regulatory Reforms, Brian Orion Jan 2004

Transmission In Transition: Analyzing California's Proposed Electricity Transmission Regulatory Reforms, Brian Orion

UC Law Journal

California's experiment with electricity deregulation is the most recent example of the State's willingness to be an energy policy maverick. Rolling blackouts and expensive long-term contracts are some of the constant reminders of this failed experiment. But another dramatic legacy of deregulation, one which is littleknown beyond inside players in regulation and industry, relates to the planning and licensing of California's system of highpower transmission lines. Thousands of miles of copper and steel wires supply families and businesses with the electricity they need to light their homes, water their crops, and manufacture their silicon chips. A well-planned and robust transmission …
