Significant Crustal Thinning Beneath The Baikal Rift Zone: New Constraints From Receiver Function Analysis, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Chizheng Chen Oct 2004

Significant Crustal Thinning Beneath The Baikal Rift Zone: New Constraints From Receiver Function Analysis, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Chizheng Chen

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Thinning of the crust of more than 10 km is a major feature of typical continental rifts such as the East African (EAR) and Rio Grande (RGR) rifts. However, numerous previous studies across the Baikal rift zone (BRZ), which has similar surface expressions and tectonic history, and more active seismicity relative to EAR and RGR, have resulted in contradicting amount of thinning, ranging from almost none to more than 10 km. We measure crustal thickness by stacking teleseismic receiver functions beneath 51 sites on the southern and central parts of the BRZ and adjacent Siberian Platform and Sayan-Baikal-Mongolian Foldbelt. Our …

The Contribution Of A Satellite Market To Price Discovery: Evidence From The Singapore Exchange, Vicentiu Covrig, David K. Ding, Buen Sin Low

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The Singapore Exchange (SGX), a small satellite market, successfully competes with a large home market, the Osaka Securities Exchange (OSE), in trading the Nikkei 225 futures index. In this paper, we investigate the contribution of the SGX to price discovery and shed light on the reasons for its continued success. Evidence is provided from information revelation and price discovery of three competing but informationally linked markets of the Nikkei 225 index - domestic spot (Tokyo Stock Exchange), domestic futures (OSE), and foreign futures (SGX), which represents the satellite market. Overall, the futures market contributes 77% to price discovery, with the …

Future Perspectives On Employee Selection: Key Directions For Future Research And Practice, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Ann Marie Ryan Oct 2004

Future Perspectives On Employee Selection: Key Directions For Future Research And Practice, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Ann Marie Ryan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A future-oriented perspective for selection and assessment research is presented. Four superordinate themes of critical import to the development of future research are identified: (i) bimodal prediction, (ii) multilevel fit, (iii) applicant reactions and decision making, and (iv) tensions between research and practice in employee selection. Under each theme we pose a number of outstanding questions for research. Implications for practice and the ongoing advancement of the sub-field of selection, traditionally one of the most robust core disciplines in international IWO psychology, are discussed.

The Role Of Manufacturing Flexibility On Product Platform Development, Soumen Ghosh, Byung Joon Park Oct 2004

The Role Of Manufacturing Flexibility On Product Platform Development, Soumen Ghosh, Byung Joon Park

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years firms from a range of industries have responded to growing market uncertainty by investing heavily in manufacturing flexibility. Manufacturing Flexibility is understood as process flexibility, that is a process that results from being able to build different types of products on the same production line at the same time. One benefit of manufacturing flexibility is the reduction of change over cost from building one product to another. Flexible manufacturing also relieves the problem of overcapacity, since excessive overcapacity could be avoided through the introduction of flexible manufacturing plants. Recently, firms have examined a new concept of enabling …

Nonrelativistic Qed Approach To The Bound-Electron G Factor, Krzysztof Pachucki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Vladimir A. Yerokhin Oct 2004

Nonrelativistic Qed Approach To The Bound-Electron G Factor, Krzysztof Pachucki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Vladimir A. Yerokhin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Within a systematic approach based on nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics, we derive the one-loop self-energy correction of order α ( Z α )4 to the bound-electron g factor. In combination with numerical data, this analytic result improves theoretical predictions for the self-energy correction for carbon and oxygen by an order of magnitude. Basing on one-loop calculations, we obtain the logarithmic two-loop contribution of order α2 ( Z α )4 ln [ ( Z α )- 2 ] and the dominant part of the corresponding constant term. The results obtained improve the accuracy of the theoretical predictions for …

Growth And Magnetic Properties Of Mno₂-Δ Nanowire Microspheres, Jinbo Yang, X.-D. Zhou, Satish K. Malik, C. S. Wang, William Joseph James Oct 2004

Growth And Magnetic Properties Of Mno₂-Δ Nanowire Microspheres, Jinbo Yang, X.-D. Zhou, Satish K. Malik, C. S. Wang, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report the synthesis of MnO2-delta microspheres using hydrothermal and conventional chemical reaction methods. The microspheres of MnO2-delta consist of nanowires having a diameter of 20-50 nm and a length of 2-8 µm. The value of oxygen vacancy delta estimated from x-ray photoelectron spectrum is 0.3. The magnetization versus temperature curve indicates a magnetic transition at about 13 K. It is found that a parasitic ferromagnetic component is imposed on the antiferromagnetic structure of MnO2-delta, which might result from distortion of the lattice structure due to oxygen vacancies. The magnetic transition temperature TN is about 10 K lower than that …

Fully Differential Three-Dimensional Angular Distributions Of Electrons Ionized In Ion-Atom Collisions, Michael Schulz, R. Moshammer, Daniel Fischer, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, J. D. Ullrich Oct 2004

Fully Differential Three-Dimensional Angular Distributions Of Electrons Ionized In Ion-Atom Collisions, Michael Schulz, R. Moshammer, Daniel Fischer, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, J. D. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We compare experimental fully differential three-dimensional angular distributions of electrons ionized from He in collision with ionic projectiles covering a broad range of perturbations (0.065 to 4.4). Even at very small perturbations clear signatures of higher-order contributions are observable. At large perturbations, such contributions become even dominant, especially those involving the post-collision interaction between the outgoing projectile and the ionized electron. Our results show that single ionization is not nearly as well understood as was assumed previously.

Nucleation Near The Spinodal: Limitations Of Mean Field Density Functional Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Jin-Song Li Oct 2004

Nucleation Near The Spinodal: Limitations Of Mean Field Density Functional Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Jin-Song Li

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the diverging size of the critical nucleus near the spinodal using the gradient theory ~GT! of van der Waals and Cahn and Hilliard and mean field density functional theory ~MFDFT!. As is well known, GT predicts that at the spinodal the free energy barrier to nucleation vanishes while the radius of the critical fluctuation diverges. We show numerically that the scaling behavior found by Cahn and Hilliard for these quantities holds quantitatively for both GT and MFDFT. We also show that the excess number of molecules Dg satisfies Cahn-Hilliard scaling near the spinodal and is consistent with the …

Constructing A Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Without Assuming A One-Factor Model, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa Oct 2004

Constructing A Coincident Index Of Business Cycles Without Assuming A One-Factor Model, Roberto S. Mariano, Yasutomo Murasawa

Research Collection School Of Economics

The Stock-Watson coincident index and its subsequent extensions assume a static linear one-factor structure for the component indicators. Such assumption is restrictive in practice, however, with as few as four indicators. In fact, such assumption is unnecessary if one defines a coincident index as an estimate of latent monthly real GDP. This paper considers VAR and factor models for latent monthly real GDP and other coincident indicators, and estimates the models using the observable mixed-frequency series. For US data, Schwartz’s Bayesian information criterion selects a two-factor model. The smoothed estimate of latent monthly real GDP is the proposed index.

Deformable Object Model Matching By Topological And Geometric Similarity, Kwok-Leung Tan, Rynson W. H. Lau, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2004

Deformable Object Model Matching By Topological And Geometric Similarity, Kwok-Leung Tan, Rynson W. H. Lau, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a novel method for efficient 3D model comparison. The method is designed to match highly deformed models through capturing two types of information. First, we propose a feature point extraction algorithm, which is based on “Level Set Diagram”, to reliably capture the topological points of a general 3D model. These topological points represent the skeletal structure of the model. Second, we also capture both spatial and curvature information, which describes the global surface of a 3D model. This is different from traditional topological 3D matching methods that use only low-dimension local features. Our method can …

Ghosts In The Court: Jonathan Belcher And The Proclamation Of 1762, Eric Adams Oct 2004

Ghosts In The Court: Jonathan Belcher And The Proclamation Of 1762, Eric Adams

Dalhousie Law Journal

History occupies a central place in aboriginal rights litigation. As a result, the circumstances and characters of the distant past play crucial roles in the adjudication of aboriginal treaty, rights and title claims. One such character is Jonathan Belcher. the first chief justice and former lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia. In 1762, Belcher issued a Proclamation reserving the north-eastern coast of Nova Scotia (and what Is now the eastern coast of New Brunswick) for the Mi'kmaq. In R. v Bernard, the accused pleaded a right to log timber on Crown land on the basis of Belcher's Proclamation. This article argues …

The Criminal Defence Lawyer's Role, David Layton Oct 2004

The Criminal Defence Lawyer's Role, David Layton

Dalhousie Law Journal

Defence lawyers often fight to prevent the conviction of people who have committed serious crimes. How can this role be justified? In providing his answer the author generally accepts the traditional view of criminal lawyering according to which defence counsel "does good" by ensuring that the state does not obtain a conviction in the absence of proof beyond a reasonable doubt based on admissible and reliable evidence Ethical advocacy in the criminal context is thus heavily influenced by a conception of justice that includes not only the search for truth but also due process rights for accused persons. The author …

Letters To John Lennon: A Play In Two Acts, Stacey Isom

English Theses & Dissertations

Letters to John Lennon is a two-act play about one woman's fantasies, nightmares, and memories that expose her desperate need to feel worthy of love. On the 20th anniversary of John Lennon's death, Kay plans to go public with her identity as Lennon's illegitimate daughter. She believes this will result in her sudden rise to fame, a new peace movement, and the consummation of her love with a rock star. Several disasters keep her from her goals, the biggest of which is the arrival of Maury, who claims to be her real father. When Maury's claim seems authentic, Kay's …

We Welcome The New Immigrants, John Defrain, Rochelle L. Dalla, Douglas A. Abbott, Julie Johnson Oct 2004

We Welcome The New Immigrants, John Defrain, Rochelle L. Dalla, Douglas A. Abbott, Julie Johnson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

From the very beginning of this project we have focused on taking a balanced approach to identifying the strengths and challenges of new immigrants in the Great Plains. Discussions of change in our world invariably focus on problems, and only occasionally on the strengths. We set out to look at new immigrants from a different perspective, in our view, a more realistic perspective: seeing the inherent strengths they possess as newcomers to our region and the gifts they bring, and examining the cultural assets the newcomers and the longer-term residents all can rely upon in working together to meet the …

A View Of Sudanese Refugee Resettlement Through Nebraska’S Print Media, Mary Willis, Constance Fernald Oct 2004

A View Of Sudanese Refugee Resettlement Through Nebraska’S Print Media, Mary Willis, Constance Fernald

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The print media has the potential to educate the general public about newly arriving Great Plains populations, influence refugee resettlement programs, and motivate volunteers to assist in transitions. Thus, accuracy of news items is crucial to successful assimilation of new populations to host communities. In this paper, we provide results from a content analysis of eight Nebraska newspapers regarding Sudanese refugees. We focus on refugee population descriptors, cultural characteristics, resettlement issues, and refugee goals to determine what could be learned about refugees from Sudan if one used local print media. Consistent with theories of stereotyping, results suggest that limited, and …
