Rare Earth-Aluminum Oxide Glasses For Optical Applications, Richard Weber, Jean A. Tangeman, Paul C. Nordine, Richard N. Scheunemann, Kirsten J. Hiera, Chandra S. Ray
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Glasses based on rare earth oxides and aluminum oxide with 0-20 mol% SiO2 provide a combination of optical properties, mechanical and chemical stability, and process characteristics not available in other oxide materials. Properties of the glasses include: refractive index 1.7-1.8, low dispersion (Abbe number ∼40), high solubility of optically active dopants, homogeneous chemical composition, long fluorescence lifetimes at dopant concentrations up to 5 mol%, broad fluorescence bandwidth, and infra-red transmission to ≈5000nm. the glasses are hard, strong and resist chemical attack and they can be cast in sections 5-10mm thick. This paper briefly describes glass processing and presents bulk …

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823 For Transmutation Applications: Final Progress Report (September 2003 – August 2004), Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The purpose of this task is to evaluate the tensile properties of three martensitic alloys namely, Alloys EP-823, HT-9 and 422 at temperatures relevant to the transmutation processes. Testing has been performed to evaluate the tensile properties of all three alloys at temperatures ranging from ambient to 600°C. The test materials were thermally-treated (quenched and tempered) prior to the evaluation of their tensile properties. The deformation characteristics of these tensile specimens, upon completion of testing, were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Efforts were also made to identify and characterize defects such as dislocations using transmission electron microscopy …

A Heuristic Methodology For Locating Monitoring Stations To Detect Contamination Events In Potable Water Distribution Systems, James R. Chastain Jr.
A Heuristic Methodology For Locating Monitoring Stations To Detect Contamination Events In Potable Water Distribution Systems, James R. Chastain Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The requirements to protect public water systems from intentional contamination have expanded in the years following September 11, 2001. The areal extent and non-linear nature of water demand and movement in the distribution system makes efficient location of sampling points difficult. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that contamination conceptually can occur at any point and at any time within the distribution system. Small to mid-sized water systems are especially at a disadvantage in addressing this issue due to limited resources available to them.
This paper proposes a heuristic methodology to identify strategic locations within the system that can …
A Multilevel Modeling Analysis Of The Geographic Variability Of Low Birth Weight Occurrence In Florida, Joseph William Green
A Multilevel Modeling Analysis Of The Geographic Variability Of Low Birth Weight Occurrence In Florida, Joseph William Green
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The associations of neighborhood level socioeconomic deprivation and low birth weight were investigated among 1,030,443 singleton live births in the State of Florida between the years 1992 and 1997. Census data for per capita income, unemployment, percent of individuals living below the poverty line, vehicle ownership and educational attainment were used as neighborhood level indicators of socioeconomic status. Additionally, these variables were combined into a deprivation index to measure relative deprivation of neighborhoods across Florida. Birth data were linked to census block groups and tracts, which were used as proxies for low birth weight. Multilevel models were used to model …
