Improving Analytical Writing Performance Of High School Freshman Social Studies Students Through Uniform Writing Standards, Kimberly Ann Juirdano

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to improve the analytical writing performance of freshman students in their social studies classes. The field of social studies requires students to review documents and respond argumentatively to questions posed by their teachers. The freshman social studies teachers in this applied dissertation profess that freshman students had poor writing skills, and therefore were unable to effectively analyze and argue in written form.

In order to remedy the problem of poor analytical writing skills, freshman social studies teachers implemented interventions such as (a) the development and usage of a locally-constructed common rubric, (b) writing laboratories in …

What Developments In Western Europe Tell Us About American Critiques Of Corporate Criminal Liability, Sara Sun Beale, Adam Safwat Jan 2004

What Developments In Western Europe Tell Us About American Critiques Of Corporate Criminal Liability, Sara Sun Beale, Adam Safwat

Faculty Scholarship

Although corporate criminal liability has been recognized in the United States for nearly a century, contemporary academic commentators have questioned its legitimacy and argued that it is inferior to its alternatives: civil liability for the corporation and/or criminal liability for individual corporate agents. Other academic critics have attacked the present definitions of corporate criminal liability. In other words, although corporate criminal liability has also had its academic champions, it has been under attack in the United States. The situation in Europe poses a sharp contrast.

Biologically Important Thiols In Various Vegetables And Fruits, Omca Demirkol, Craig D. Adams, Nuran Ercal

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Biological thiols are important antioxidants, and recent studies showed that their contents vary depending on the groups of foodstuffs. Therefore, we investigated the levels of some biological thiols in various vegetables and fruits by using a sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. Biological thiols measured in some vegetables and fruits include glutathione (L-glutamyl-L-cysteinly glycine, GSH), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), captopril [CAP (C9H15NO3S)], homocysteine (HCYS), cysteine (CYS), and -glutamyl cysteine (GGC). Our results show that biological thiol contents are between 3-349 nM/g wet weight in vegetables and 4-136 nM/g wet weight in fruits. CAP is only found in asparagus (28 nM/g wet weight). …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation describes the writer’s first 12 months as the administrative intern at Gulf Shores Middle School (GSMS). Reading Power At Fews Alternative School: A Program For Improvement, Ennis J. Mccorvey

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation describes an intervention at Fews Alternative School in Montgomery, Alabama. Data from the QRI (Leslie & Caldwell, 1996) showed that the majority of students at Fews had reading problems, as was projected by this researcher. Ninety-two percent of the students recommended to Fews were determined to have a severe reading deficit. In order for these students to experience any measure of success upon returning to their home school, an intervention to improve their reading needed to be implemented. Of the 122 students referred to Fews, 114 of them were determined to have reading problems. The researcher implemented …

Increasing Student Achievement In The Five Strands Of The Mathematics Portion Of The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, Pamela B. Murphy

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The passing and implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 dramatically increased public awareness of accountability in U.S. public schools (S. Charp, 2003). State-mandated testing is now present in nearly 40 of the states. Florida educators have struggled to meet the demands of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). In 1998, the Florida A+ Accountability program, which assigns grades to elementary, middle, and high schools, was initiated. The standards-based accountability has forced administrators, teachers, and parents to search for practices that will increase student achievement.

This applied dissertation describes the practices put in place in one South …
