RIT Digital Archives
The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private 4-year college in upstate New York with approximately 15,000 students (http://www.rit.edu/facts.html). RIT is comprised of eight colleges and is focused on providing technical and professional career training. As the demand for workers with these skills has grown, so has RIT. Distance learning at RIT started in earnest in 1979 with telecourses. The goal then as it is now is to make learning more accessible to students. In the mid-1980’s we began incorporating email and online discussion boards into telecourses. By 1991, RIT had started completely online distance learning programs and courses. …

In an effort to continue to explore the experiences of first-time distance faculty and to add to the information of the survey completed by Carole Sack in January 2004, a second survey was conducted during the Summer quarter 2004. It was hoped that we would reach the faculty new to distance teaching that had taught in Winter 032 and Spring 033 and again learn from them how to improve the preparation and support of faculty teaching online. The same survey instrument used in the original interviews was utilized for this second round of interviews. The number of faculty new to …

Legal Images Of Fatherhood: Welfare Reform, Child Support Enforcement, And Fatherless Children, Jane C. Murphy
ExpressO
This Article analyzes the issue of paternity disestablishment, an issue courts and legislatures have been struggling with over the last several years. For a variety of reasons explored in this Article, an increasing number of fathers have filed requests to set aside paternity orders seeking to be relieved of the legal obligations of fatherhood. As a result families have been destabilized and children are becoming fatherless. The implications for the future of the family are profound. Although some scholars have examined this phenomenon, none have addressed the link between paternity disestablishment and welfare reform.
This Article explores the law's evolving …

Venezuela Increases Royalty Fees For Oil Drilling Greatly, Noticen
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced that he would be increasing the royalties the government would charge for oil drilling along the Orinoco oil belt in the country's southeast. The move surprised corporate executives who had not received prior notice of the royalty increase. A former director of the state petroleum corporation warned that oil multinationals might sue over the hike while Chavez boasted that it would add large amounts of revenue to his social-benefits programs. Orinoco project royalties go from 1% to 16.6% "There will be no more petroleum given away," announced Chavez on his weekly radio and television broadcast. …

Modified Quantum Trajectory Dynamics Using A Mixed Wave Function Representation, Sophya Garashchuk, Vitaly A. Rassolov
Modified Quantum Trajectory Dynamics Using A Mixed Wave Function Representation, Sophya Garashchuk, Vitaly A. Rassolov
Faculty Publications
Dynamics of quantum trajectories provides an efficient framework for description of various quantum effects in large systems, but it is unstable near the wave function density nodes where the quantum potential becomes singular. A mixed coordinate space/polar representation of the wave function is used to circumvent this problem. The resulting modified trajectory dynamics associated with the polar representation is nonsingular and smooth. The interference structure and the nodes of the wave function density are described, in principle, exactly in the coordinate representation. The approximate version of this approach is consistent with the semiclassical linearized quantum force method [S. Garashchuk and …

Relationships Between Non-Linguistic Variables In Second Language Acquisition And The Attained English Language Proficiency Of Taiwanese University Students, Chihming Hsieh
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Second language acquisition (SLA) research, the study of how people learn to communicate in a language other than their native language, encompasses a broad range of questions from a wide variety of perspectives. One of the most widely recognized facts about SLA was that some individuals are more successful in learning a second language than are others (Gass & Selinker, 2001). Students with the same initial linguistic abilities, who receive the same education, even in the same institution, often do not achieve the same linguistic competency levels at program completion (Dornyei, 1998). This phenomenon cannot be explained purely by linguistic …
A Sensitivity Analysis Of A Heuristic Model Used For The Placement Allocation Of Utilities In Transportation Right-Of-Way Corridors, Steve Clarence Christian
A Sensitivity Analysis Of A Heuristic Model Used For The Placement Allocation Of Utilities In Transportation Right-Of-Way Corridors, Steve Clarence Christian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The requirements for public utility systems in the United States of America have grown enormously over the years triggering a tremendous shortage for space available to public utilities on and within transportation right-of-ways (ROW). Overcrowding and improper location of utilities has resulted in problems such as, damage to infrastructure, traffic accidents and, interruption of service to customers. The project titled, "Optimal Placement of Utilities within FDOT Right-of-Way", sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and currently being investigated at the University of South Florida, presents a decision-making heuristic aimed at developing a better utility placement allocation system (Kranc et. …

This task will create a two-dimensional, saturated zone, vertical cross-section model of groundwater flow and thermal transport through the large hydraulic gradient (LHG). This model is referenced herein as the thermal model. The scope of this study is limited to presenting a postulated hydrogeologic configuration of the LHG. The conceptualization will include the use of postulated hydrogeologic structures and material properties. The thermal model will be spatially limited to the area immediately upgradient and downgradient of the LHG and will not reproduce the many hydrogeologic features of the existing regional and site-scale models. The thermal model will be orientated north …

Microglia Activation In Alzheimer's Disease, Kirk Phillip Townsend
Microglia Activation In Alzheimer's Disease, Kirk Phillip Townsend
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The work detailed in this dissertation has an overarching theme of modulating microglia activation in both in vivo and in vitro models relevant to AD. The premise is that understanding microglia function in this context may lead to a better understanding of AD pathogenesis and thus to effective therapeutic interventions. In chapter 3, we employ a well-defined model of microglia activation whereby the intraperitoneal delivery of LPS results in CNS microglia activation and TNF-α production. Having previously identified that CD45 signaling pathways antagonized microglia TNF-α production in vitro and given that immunotherapy with anti-CD45 antibodies are already in clinical trials …
Numerical Simulation Of Thermal Comfort And Contaminant Transport In Air Conditioned Rooms, Son Hong Ho
Numerical Simulation Of Thermal Comfort And Contaminant Transport In Air Conditioned Rooms, Son Hong Ho
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Health care facilities, offices, as well as workshops and other commercial occupancies, require ventilation and air conditioning for thermal comfort and removal of contaminants and other pollutions. A good design of ventilation and air conditioning provides a healthy and comfortable environment for patients, workers, and visitors.
The increasing developments of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the recent years have opened the possibilities of low-cost yet effective method for improving HVAC systems in design phase, with less experiment required. This work presents numerical simulations of thermal comfort and contaminant removal for two typical working spaces where these factors are critical: a …
Analysis Of Flow In A 3d Chamber And A 2d Spray Nozzle To Approximate The Exiting Jet Free Surface, Chin Tung Hong
Analysis Of Flow In A 3d Chamber And A 2d Spray Nozzle To Approximate The Exiting Jet Free Surface, Chin Tung Hong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation is to analyze the flow pattern of cooling fluids in the 3D "twister-effect" mixing chamber and to approximate the free surface behaviors exiting the 2D spray nozzle. The cone angle and free surface height located at the end of the free surface are two significant factors to determine the spraying area on a heated plane. This process is a reasonable representation of many industrial cooling application. The whole system consists of 4 inlet tubes connected to the top of the mixing chamber, and the spray nozzle is located under the chamber. Four different refrigerants, like …
