The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The tale of how the English-born orthopedic surgeon landed in Cambodia begins in Fairbanks, Alaska. "One summer evening I was sitting with my buddies, drinking beer. They were all talking about going on sabbatical for the winter. I thought, 'Why couldn't I take a sabbatical?'"

Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Country Profile

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The English landed on the Falkland Islands in 1690, but the first settlement on this land off the coast of southern Argentina was not established until 1764 by the French. The next year, Britain established its own settlement and claimed the islands in the name of King George III. In 1766, the Falklands were turned over to Spain, beginning a centuries-long territorial dispute, first between Britain and Spain, then between Britain and Argentina. The United Kingdom established a naval garrison on the islands in 1833, thus asserting its claim to them. In April 1982, Argentina invaded the islands, starting a …

Approaches And Methods In Language Teaching: An Investigative Look At A Total Physical Response In Chattanooga Area Classrooms, Alicia R. Hannah Nov 2004

Approaches And Methods In Language Teaching: An Investigative Look At A Total Physical Response In Chattanooga Area Classrooms, Alicia R. Hannah

Honors Theses

I was sitting on a leather couch at a local hangout trying to cram for a test in my Advanced Spanish Grammar class. In front of me, I had my textbook open to a picture of a crowded South American intersection and I was frantically trying to memorize a list of more than 100 Spanish vocabulary words related to automobiles. I had been studying Spanish since the eighth grade and was just amazed that 10 years later I was still having trouble internalizing certain words. I was talking aloud to myself, trying to remember the verb "to start the car." …

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin Nov 2004

Simulation Of Gate Lag And Current Collapse In Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistors, N. Braga, R. Mickevicius, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur, M. Asif Khan, Grigory Simin

Faculty Publications

Results of two-dimensional numerical simulations of gate lag and current collapse in GaN heterostructurefield-effect transistors are presented. Simulation results clearly show that current collapse takes place only if an enhanced trapping occurs under the gate edges. Hot electrons play an instrumental role in the collapse mechanism. The simulation results also link the current collapse with electrons spreading into the buffer layer and confirm that a better electron localization (as in a double heterostructurefield-effect transistor) can dramatically reduce current collapse.

Building A Case For The Unfamiliar Cause In Cause-Related Marketing: The Importance Of Cause Vested Interest, Charles G. O'Brien Nov 2004

Building A Case For The Unfamiliar Cause In Cause-Related Marketing: The Importance Of Cause Vested Interest, Charles G. O'Brien

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Marketing and advertising practitioners are currently matching up a brand with a cause and broadcasting the association to consumers in a practice called cause related marketing (CRM). Scholars are building a stream of academic research which seeks to understand the relationship between a brand and a cause (a.k.a., alliance) in relation to the final outcome of a CRM campaign. Ostensibly, both partners benefit from this alliance, although many CRM studies seek to understand how to optimize this relationship for each partner.

In professional practice and academic research both practitioners and researchers have focused on established, popular, well-known causes in consideration …

Discover results of a study focusing on accessibility of over 1,000 digital library projects from 100-plus academic members of the Association of Research Libraries. Study noted number, titles, types and URLs of projects; type of access; terminology; level of access from the library’s homepage; whether content was restricted, and if so, was it explained; whether metadata was included, and if so, was it searchable; was the project developed through a partnership; and was the project affiliated with a library unit. Learn more about surprising findings that digital library resources, despite considerable funding and resources, are not easily accessible.

Interfacial Stability Of Electrodeposition Of Cuprous Oxide Thin Films, Partho Neogi Nov 2004

Interfacial Stability Of Electrodeposition Of Cuprous Oxide Thin Films, Partho Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experiments on deposition of Cu2O films from basic cupper sulfate solution show that copper also deposits. At low, but basic values of pH only copper deposits and at high pH only cuprous oxide deposits. In the intermediate range where both compete the system shows oscillations at "constant current." Linear stability analysis has been conducted for such an electrochemical cell to show that oscillations can take place in the parameter space identified in the experiments. The results are keeping with most of the experimental observations, which are many, but not with all. The physical mechanisms behind the oscillations are …

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu Nov 2004

The Effects Of Militant Press On Nigeria's Democratic Evolution, Oluwaniran Malaolu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is an in-depth study of the Nigerian press, the ubiquitous behemoth which called itself the "defender" of Nigeria's national independence and the last "hope" of the common man. It's a bold attempt to critically examine its antecedents, its evolution or development especially the historical, political, technological and socio-economic events that had impacted its growth, its world views and ideologies. It's a thorough assessment of the press' influence on Nigeria's socio-economic and political development, as well as the suitability of its tactics and posturing toward attaining its set goals of economic and political emancipation of Nigerians. Most importantly, this study …

Copd Dyspnea Management By Family Caregivers, Loris A. Thomas Nov 2004

Copd Dyspnea Management By Family Caregivers, Loris A. Thomas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An estimated 14 million people in the United States currently have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This nonreversible illness causes progressively decreasing airflow and is manifested by frequent episodes of acute and chronic dyspnea. The purposes of this study were: 1) to examine the relationships between mastery (MS), negative affectivity trait (NA), perceptions of patient dyspnea severity (DSI), and perceptions of which dyspnea interventions are effective (DE) among family caregiver-COPD patient dyads and 2) to examine the degree of agreement between the dyad members regarding dyspnea assessment and management. The study subjects were elderly (patients = 71.6 years, caregivers = …

True Believers Or Moral Absolutists, Seow Hon Tan Nov 2004

True Believers Or Moral Absolutists, Seow Hon Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The recent American presidential elections brought to the fore the question of what place moral values have in public decision-making when traditional moral values are not espoused by all in a pluralist society. Even if traditional values - seen as absolutist - are imposed on others through a democratic electoral process, that imposition, particularly in hot button issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, remains difficult to accept.
