Application Of Time-Series Analyses To The Hydrological Functioning Of An Alpine Karstic System: The Case Of Bange-L’Eau-Morte, T. Mathevet, M. L. Lepiller, A. Mangin

KIP Articles

This paper analyses the hydrological functioning of the Bange-L’Eau-Morte karstic system using classical and original techniques, recession curves, correlation and spectral analyses, noise analysis and wavelet analyses. The main characteristics that can be deduced are the recession coefficients, the dynamic volume of storage, the response time of the system, the quickflow and baseflow components and the snowmelt characteristics. The non-stationary and timescale-dependent behaviour of the system is studied and particular features of the runoff are shown. The step-by-step use of these different techniques provides a general methodology applicable to different karstic systems to provide quantifiable and objective criteria for differentiation …

Acute Simultaneous Multiple Infarctions In One Cerebral Hemisphere: A Casereport, Ting-I Han, Mu-Jung Kao, Der-Yang Chou, Pey-Yu Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Acute ischemic stroke is well known to be a single event. However, multiple simultaneous acute strokes involving more than one vascular territory are less studied. Large-artery disease of corresponding vessels and cardioembolism are thought to be the most important risk factors for multiple simultaneous infarctions. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), which successfully discriminats acute from chronic infarct, is particularly useful in patients with multiple infarcts in more than one territory. The most common combinations of simultaneous multiple infarction in one cerebral hemisphere involve the territories of the anterior superficial middle cerebral artery (MCA) plus the posterior superficial MCA, and the territories of …

Theoretical Modeling Of Protective Oxide Layer Growth In Non-Isothermal Lead-Alloys Coolant Systems, Yitung Chen Dec 2004

Theoretical Modeling Of Protective Oxide Layer Growth In Non-Isothermal Lead-Alloys Coolant Systems, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The goal of the proposed research project is to provide basic understanding of the protective oxide layer behaviors and to develop oxide layer growth models of steels in non-isothermal lead-alloys (lead or lead-bismuth eutectic) coolant systems. It is widely recognized that the corrosiveness of the lead-alloys is a critical obstacle and challenge for which it can be safely used or applied in the nuclear coolant systems. Active oxygen control technique can promote the formation of the “self-healing” oxide films on the structural material surface, drastically reducing steel corrosion and coolant contamination. Many experiments of steels exposed to flowing lead-alloys have …

Evaluation Of Fluorapatite As A Waste-Form Material: First Quarter Report (2004-05), October 1 - December 31, 2004, Dennis W. Lindle, Oliver Hemmers

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Fluorapatite, fluorinated calcium phosphate, has been identified as a potential matrix for the entombment of the zirconium fluoride fission product waste stream from the proposed FLEX process. If the efficacy of fluorapatite-based waste-storage can be demonstrated, then new and potentially more-efficient options for handling and separating high-level wastes, based on fluoride-salt extraction, will become feasible. This proposal will develop a dual-path research project to develop a process to fabricate a synthetic fluorapatite waste form for the ZrF4, FP waste stream, characterize the waste form, examine its performance under environmental conditions, and correlate the behavior of the waste form …

Primary Adrenal Insufficiency Developing After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Casereport, June-Kai Chen, Tien-Wen Chen, Ming-Cheng Weng, Mao-Hsiung Huang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

There have been isolated reports in the literature of the natural history and less than complete knowledge of the epidemiology and the pathophysiology of endocrine alteration occurring after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This article describes one primarily adrenal-dysfunction patient with severe TBI who had no evidence of present or prior adrenal autoimmune disease, infection, hemorrhage, or malignancy. It is suggested that this distinct condition can be labeled as ”primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) developing after TBI”.

Growth And Body Composition Analysis In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Tsui-Fen Yang, Pei-Hsin Lin, Chueh-Lien Yang, Rai-Chi Chan, Nien-Tzu Kao

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The objective of the present study was to investigate the growth and body composition of younger children with cerebral palsy, using anthropometric measures and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). We also looked into the relative strength and consistency between different measurements in analyzing body composition. Thirty-nine patients, aged 3 to 13, with an established diagnosis of cerebral palsy, and age- and sex-matched control subjects, were recruited for this study. Distribution of height-by-age and weight-by-age percentiles differed significantly between the study and the control groups, whereby the subjects of cerebral palsy grew shorter and lighter than normal subjects. The body fat percentage …

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program For A Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Complicated With Acute Infection, Lobar Atelectasis And Severely Restrictive Ventilatory Impairment: A Casereport, Ya-Wen Hsu, Jue-Long Wang, Jin-Shen Yang, Ko-Long Lin Dec 2004

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program For A Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Complicated With Acute Infection, Lobar Atelectasis And Severely Restrictive Ventilatory Impairment: A Casereport, Ya-Wen Hsu, Jue-Long Wang, Jin-Shen Yang, Ko-Long Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

An exact identification among the subsets of pulmonary lupus is important in planning efficacious therapy. Asymptomatic pulmonary lupus needs no specific treatment, while prompt and aggressive treatment is mandatory for the potential life-threatening pulmonary version. We present a case of systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)with lobar atelectasis and severely restricted lung impairment and illustrate how a pulmonary rehabilitation program aided therapy during the acute infectious episode. An individualized pulmonary rehabilitation program for SLE patients compromised with chest distress may thus be a prudent course of action.

The Improvement Of Pain Symptoms And Activities Of Daily Living In People With Knee Osteoarthritis After Intra-Articular Hyaluronic Acid Injection, Carl P. C. Chen, Chih-Kuang Chen, Max J. L. Chen, Yin-Chou Lin, Tony H. C. Hsu, Ju-Wen Cheng, Simon F. T. Tang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a slowly evolving articular disease that appears to originate in the cartilage and affects the underlying bone, soft tissues, and synovial fluid. This condition usually occurs late in life, principally affecting the large weight-bearing joints such as the knee. It is particularly disabling when the knees are affected, because it limits the ability to walk, to rise from a chair, and to use stairs. The treatment selections for OA knees include analgesic drugs, physiotherapy, intra-articular (IA) drug administration, and surgical total knee replacement. We chose IA hyaluronic acid injection as the treatment method as it was documented as …

Lumbar Pathological Fracture Due To Salmonella Osteomyelitis Mimics Compression Fracture, Ming-Fong Tsai, Zong-Jing Wang, I-Chiun Lu, Chi-Hung Chiu Dec 2004

Lumbar Pathological Fracture Due To Salmonella Osteomyelitis Mimics Compression Fracture, Ming-Fong Tsai, Zong-Jing Wang, I-Chiun Lu, Chi-Hung Chiu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

We describe a patient with Salmonella vertebral osteomyelitis who presented with severe low back pain. An initial diagnosis of compression fracture was based on clinical symptoms and signs, as well as imaging studies. During hospitalization, the patient developed a fever. A repeat MRI, positive blood cultures, and abscess culture results obtained during an operative procedure confirmed the diagnosis of Salmonella vertebral osteomyelitis. Salmonella vertebral osteomyelitis is rare, and its clinical presentation may mimic other common diseases such as compression fracture. This case illustration suggests that in patients with rapidly progressive low back pain, fever, and poor response to treatment, vertebral …

Prosecuting Members Of The U.S. Military For Wartime Environmental Crimes, Eric Talbot Jensen, James J. Teixeira Jr. Dec 2004

Prosecuting Members Of The U.S. Military For Wartime Environmental Crimes, Eric Talbot Jensen, James J. Teixeira Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

War is inherently damaging to the environment. Though these deleterious actions are often attributed to "states" during times of armed conflict, they are normally the result of military operations conducted by members of the military who are carrying out orders from military superiors. While many have proposed systemic changes that affect how states can or should be held responsible, few have commented on the process of holding individual military personnel or commanders responsible for battlefield acts of environmental damage. This paper argues that there are sufficient laws and regulations in place to hold individuals and commanders in the United States …

The Yosemite Butterflies (Text), And The Yosemite Butterflies (Text): Supplement Of Additional Information, Collections And Corrections For Volume 5, No. 1, Kenneth E. Davenport

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The current checklist covers the 170 known species and additional 48 subspecies known to occur in the Yosemite region, California, United States. This represents a total of 218 taxa (some being undescribed and unnamed) now recognized in the study area. This compares with Garth and Tilden’s 1963 survey which recognized 134 species and 16 additional subspecies, a total of 150 taxa. In addition to those, six additional species reported from the region are “questionable or doubtful” and another six species occur just outside the defined region.

The supplement includes additional information for the benefit of those who obtained the first …
