Conducting Epidemiological Research In South Africa: Challenges In The Data Collection Process, Yegan Pillay, Alan J. Flisher

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

This article addresses the challenges faced by research supervisors and research assistants while collecting data to explore the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents in South Africa. The article focuses on budgetary constraints, interviewee expectations, moral issues, limited confidentiality, fatigue factors and racial issues that threatened the completion of the project. These challenges are examined from the emic-etic theoretical paradigm and the interactions between the research supervisors, the research assistants and the research participants are analyzed. The authors propose recommendations that can serve to prepare researchers who embark on conducting research in similar socio-cultural environments.

History Of Research On African Factory-Printed Cloth And Current Approaches In The Field, Michelle Willard Jan 2004

History Of Research On African Factory-Printed Cloth And Current Approaches In The Field, Michelle Willard

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This paper examines the significance of factory-printed cloth in Africa and its potential to communicate various messages through its use as clothing. Factory-printed cloth also has unintended communicative value when it is displayed outside Africa in museum contexts. I will introduce the topic with a brief history of research carried out on African factory-printed cloth and its appearance in museum and gallery exhibitions. This has led to contemporary forms of art historical and anthropological research. Some of the latter, including my own, has involved field collecting of commemorative cloths in West Africa. My research resulted in a museum exhibition of …

A Principled Approach To The Quest For Racial Diversity On The Judiciary, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Kevin R. Johnson Jan 2004

A Principled Approach To The Quest For Racial Diversity On The Judiciary, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Kevin R. Johnson

Articles by Maurer Faculty

As has been the case with respect to many political and social institutions in American society, diversity has been demanded, and at times pursued, in the nomination and appointment of state and federal judges. Nonetheless, commentators have long lamented the lack of diversity among judges in the United States.

U.S. Supreme Court appointments epitomize the glaring lack of diversity on the federal judiciary. Not until 1967 did President Lyndon Baines Johnson appoint the first African American Justice, Thurgood Marshall, to the Court. Since then, a more diverse group of judges has served on the state and federal courts than throughout …

Site And Mechanism Of Leptin's Antisteatotic And Insulin Sensitizing Actions In Lipodystrophic Liver, Esra Asilmaz Jan 2004

Site And Mechanism Of Leptin's Antisteatotic And Insulin Sensitizing Actions In Lipodystrophic Liver, Esra Asilmaz

Student Theses and Dissertations

An adipocyte hormone which functions as the afferent signal in a negative feedback loop regulating energy balance, has profound effects on glucose and lipid metabolisms. Lipodystrophic humans and mice have a complete or partial absence of adipose tissue and a secondary reduction of leptin. This is associated with insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis, which are corrected by leptin administration. This thesis aimed to define the site of leptin action and understand the molecular basis of leptin's insulin sensitizing and antisteatotic effects in lipodystrophy. To determine the site of leptin action, we treated lipodystrophic aP2-nSREBP-1c mice with a low dose of …

Culture-Independent Analysis Of Fecal Enterobacteria In Environmental Samples By Single-Cell Mrna Profiling, Han Chen, Gomathinayagam Ponniah, Nancy Salonen, Paul H. Blum Jan 2004

Culture-Independent Analysis Of Fecal Enterobacteria In Environmental Samples By Single-Cell Mrna Profiling, Han Chen, Gomathinayagam Ponniah, Nancy Salonen, Paul H. Blum

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A culture-independent method called mRNA profiling has been developed for the analysis of fecal enterobacteria and their physiological status in environmental samples. This taxon-specific approach determines the single-cell content of selected gene transcripts whose abundance is either directly or inversely proportional to growth state. Fluorescence in situ hybridization using fluorochrome-labeled oligonucleotide probes was used to measure the cellular concentration of fis and dps mRNA. Relative levels of these transcripts provided a measure of cell growth state and the ability to enumerate fecal enterobacterial cell number. Orthologs were cloned by inverse PCR from several major enterobacterial genera, and probes specific for …

Asian American Perspectives On College Student Experience: An Interpretive Narrative, Linda Chen Einsiedler Jan 2004

Asian American Perspectives On College Student Experience: An Interpretive Narrative, Linda Chen Einsiedler

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a socio-cultural study examining contemporary Asian American college student experiences at a private liberal arts residential college in the rural Northeast United States. This project utilizes a grounded theory approach designed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The findings include a narrative interpretation that considers emotional experiences and social behaviors as sub-consciously held internalized identity beliefs.

This project details psychological and social dimensions of shared Asian American experiences with insights into individual interpretive perspective frameworks shaped by community cultures. This study describes a distinctive Asian American identity that conjoins ethnicity with racial self-identity. Variables in ethnic identity, …

Playing The Man: Masculinity, Performance, And United States Foreign Policy, 1901--1920, Kim Brinck-Johnsen Jan 2004

Playing The Man: Masculinity, Performance, And United States Foreign Policy, 1901--1920, Kim Brinck-Johnsen

Doctoral Dissertations

"Playing the Man": Masculinity Performance, and US Foreign Policy, 1901--1920 argues that early twentieth century conceptions of masculinity played a significant role in constructing US foreign policy and in creating a new sense of national identity. It focuses on five public figures (Jane Addams, W. E. B. Du Bois, John Reed, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson). Although their conceptions of masculinity varied, each of these central historical figures based his or her US foreign policy position on the idea that in the conduct of US foreign relations, the United States needed to "play the man." Similarly, even when their policy …

Women’S Work, Child Care, And Helpers-At-The-Nest In A Hunter-Gatherer Society, Raymond Hames, Patricia Draper Jan 2004

Women’S Work, Child Care, And Helpers-At-The-Nest In A Hunter-Gatherer Society, Raymond Hames, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Considerable research on helpers-at-the-nest demonstrates the positive effects of firstborn daughters on a mother’s reproductive success and the survival of her children compared with women who have firstborn sons. This research is largely restricted to agricultural settings. In the present study we ask: “Does ‘daughter first’ improve mothers’ reproductive success in a hunting and gathering context?” Through an analysis of 84 postreproductive women in this population we find that the sex of the first- or second-born child has no effect on a mother’s fertility or the survival of her offspring. We conclude that specific environmental and economic factors underlay the …

[Review Of] Andrew Pilkington, Racial Disadvantage And Ethnic Diversity In Britain, Simboonath Singh Jan 2004

[Review Of] Andrew Pilkington, Racial Disadvantage And Ethnic Diversity In Britain, Simboonath Singh

Ethnic Studies Review

Andrew Pilkington's Racial Disadvantage and Ethnic Diversity in Britain (2003) is a comprehensive and systematic study of race and ethnicity in contemporary Britain. The approach taken is decidedly sociological but incorporates an inter-disciplinary perspective, drawing upon areas such as History, Politics, Geography and Cultural Studies. In Chapter 1 the author makes a fine conceptual distinction between core concepts such as race and ethnicity and theoretically subscribes to the more dynamic social constructionist approach to ethnicity as an acceptable alternative to previous models. Racialization is invoked as an alternative problematic of racism to alert the reader to the dangers of reification …

Technology And Classroom Communication: The Influence Of Class Type, Class Size, And Instructional Technology Use On Teacher Verbal And Nonverbal Immediacy, Paula D. Turman, Melissa Davis, Joe Gamble

Iowa Journal of Communication

As the use of instructional technology in the college classroom has increased over the past decade, instructors have had to adapt their teaching and communication behaviors in order to successfully integrate teaching styles into this new instructional environment. However, limited empirical testing has attempted to determine the impact increased technology use has had on instructor communication behaviors. Thus, this study examined 136 undergraduate students to determine how an instructor's technology use, delivery method and course size influences student reports of teacher verbal and nonverbal immediacy behaviors. Results indicated significant differences based on the type of technology (PowerPoint and video) for …
