An Experimental Examination Of Equivalence Failures In Multi-Cultural Comparative Research, F. Mark Case Jul 2004

An Experimental Examination Of Equivalence Failures In Multi-Cultural Comparative Research, F. Mark Case

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

As the global economy integrates, there is an increased need to understand international business phenomena. This forces a reliance upon multi-cultural marketing research, which is evidenced by a marked increase in international studies, particularly multi-cultural comparative research (Sin, Cheung & Lee 1999). Central to the usefulness of this research is the question of the validity and comparability of results, which is greatly affected by a property known as equivalence of test instruments; or the degree to which the scales and the items in them are seen to be the same across cultures.

To date, no research exists that approaches the …

Gender And Age Differences In Brazilian Children’S Friendship Nominations And Peer Sociometric Ratings, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Gustavo Carlo, Lenna L. Ontai, Silvia H. Koller, George P. Knight

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine gender-and age-related patterns of friendship preferences among Brazilian children. In particular, we examined: (a) children’s same-sex friendship preference, and its greater intensity among older children; (b) higher exclusivity among girls and higher inclusiveness among boys; and (c) generally higher exclusivity and inclusiveness among older children. Participants were 210 (110 boys, 100 girls) public school students from Brazil who ranged in age from 3.0 to 10.5 years of age. Children were asked to nominate their best friends and to rate how much they liked and disliked each of their other classmates. Children generally …

A Novel Role Of Lactosylceramide In The Regulation Of Lipopolysaccharide/Interferon-Γ-Mediated Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Gene Expression: Implications For Neuroinflammatory Diseases, Ravinder Pannu, Je-Seong Won, Mushfiquddin Khan, Avtar K. Singh, Inderjit Singh Jun 2004

A Novel Role Of Lactosylceramide In The Regulation Of Lipopolysaccharide/Interferon-Γ-Mediated Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Gene Expression: Implications For Neuroinflammatory Diseases, Ravinder Pannu, Je-Seong Won, Mushfiquddin Khan, Avtar K. Singh, Inderjit Singh

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

In the present study a possible role of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene expression and nitric oxide (NO) production after spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats has been established. In primary rat astrocytes lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) treatment increased the intracellular levels of lactosylceramide (LacCer) and induced iNOS gene expression. D-Threo-1-phenyl-2-decanoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol·HCI (PDMP), a glucosylceramide synthase and LacCer synthase (galactosyltransferase, GalT-2) inhibitor, inhibited LPS/IFN-γ induced iNOS expression, which was reversed by exogenously supplied LacCer, but not by other glycosphingolipids. LPS/IFN-γ caused a rapid increase in the activity of GalT-2 and synthesis of LacCer. Silencing of GalT-2 …

Reading Filipina Migrant Workers In Hong Kong : Tracing A Feminist And Cultural Politics Of Transformation, Aida Jean Manipon

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

For Filipino migrant workers , the journey overseas in search of contractual employment marks a profound turning point in their lives. It registers the crossing of spatial and cultural borders that leads to the shifting of terrains from which they make sense of their selves and the world of ‘others.’ It signifies a rupture in time that alters their sense of history, giving shape to new vantage points from which they reflect on the past and project an imagination of future. This research explores the question of how Filipina domestic workers in Hong Kong make sense of their experiences as …

A Vueltas Con El Posibilismo Teatral, Berta Muñoz Cáliz

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

In this paper the author examines a practically unknown aspect of the polemic about posibilismo between Alfonso Sastre and Antonio Buero Vallejo in 1960: the censor's criterion.

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Local theatre culture of Český Krumlov (Southern Bohemia) comes from 2nd half of 16th century. Until the present day there has been a Baroque theatre situated in the castle and it is considered to be a European rarity. The castle library which is expected to have one of the most important book funds of the Czech Republic contains book collections belonging to the House of Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg. The works from the library written in Spanish are thematically the same as the ones being read in Spain in Europe at that time. As for Spanish plays deposited there we can …

Monénembo's L'Aîné Des Orphelins And The Rwandan Genocide, Lisa Mcnee Jun 2004

Monénembo's L'Aîné Des Orphelins And The Rwandan Genocide, Lisa Mcnee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Monénembo's L'Aîné des orphelins and the Rwandan Genocide," Lisa McNee discusses Tierno Monénembo's L'Aîné des orphelins, a novel that offers a double discourse and a dual memory of the genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994. McNee argues that L'Aîné des orphelins presents us with an extraordinary kind of fictional testimonial to genocide. Although Monénembo is not from Rwanda and did not participate in the tragedy, only someone who has paid the price of the clarity needed to distinguish between good and bad faith could have written a novel like L'Aîné des orphelins. Monénembo's characterization of …

“A Different Way To Portray It”: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Audiencing The [New] Newlywed Game, Christopher Reed Groscurth Jun 2004

“A Different Way To Portray It”: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Audiencing The [New] Newlywed Game, Christopher Reed Groscurth

Masters Theses

This study seeks to extend the body of literature which explores how culturally-situated audiences assign meaning to television texts. Specifically, this inquiry introduces and describes the audiencing behavior of several vintage television audiences. Drawing on existing cultural studies and feminist research, in-depth, semi-structured focus group interviews were used to gather viewer perceptions of the gendered discourse on two episodes of The [New] Newlywed Game (one from the '70s and one from the '90s). The focus group interviews were audio-taped then later transcribed verbatim. Six emergent themes: (1) Understanding the Discourse of Power Structures, (2) Gendered Questions: Form and Content …

An Integrated Analysis Of Pre-Hispanic Mortuary Practices: A Middle Sicán Case Study, Izumi Shimada, Ken-Ichi Shinoda, Julie Farnum, Robert Corruccini, Hirokatsu Watanabe Jun 2004

An Integrated Analysis Of Pre-Hispanic Mortuary Practices: A Middle Sicán Case Study, Izumi Shimada, Ken-Ichi Shinoda, Julie Farnum, Robert Corruccini, Hirokatsu Watanabe

Publications

Recent debate has raised serious questions about the viability of the social and ideological reconstruction of prehistoric culture on the basis of mortuary analysis. In recent years bioarchaeology has gained considerable prominence, underscoring the fact that death, burials, and associated mortuary practices are multifaceted phenomena shaped by biological, social, ideological, and taphonomic factors. Few studies attempting social reconstruction through mortuary analysis, including those of a bioarchaeological character, have adequately addressed this multidimensionality. This study shows that social, ideological, and bioarchaeological reconstruction can be productively pursued through tight integration of a multitude of approaches and perspectives set within a long‐term regional …

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Professor Karma Lekshe Tsomo examines the contradictions and innovations that characterize the adoption of Buddhism by Americans. Islam And Democracy: An Empirical Examiniation Of Muslims' Political Culture, Moataz Bellah Mohamed Abdel Fattah Jun 2004

Islam And Democracy: An Empirical Examiniation Of Muslims' Political Culture, Moataz Bellah Mohamed Abdel Fattah

Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the following empirical puzzle: do the attitudes of ordinary educated Muslims stand as an obstacle toward the adoption of democracy? This research question calls for empirical/behavioral methodological tools that bring into focus contemporary Muslims' attitudes rather than ancient jurists' contributions. In other words, the dissertation shifts attention from ancient Islamic texts to contemporary Muslims' mindsets through written and web-bases surveys in 32 Muslim societies.

At the aggregate level, Muslim societies perplex with two types of sub-cultures: the culture of "dictator, but..." and the culture of "democracy-as-a-must." The former is the sub-couture of two groups of Muslims: …

La Lucha Con El Ángel En El Post-Teatro, Amon Paul N'Dri Jun 2004

La Lucha Con El Ángel En El Post-Teatro, Amon Paul N'Dri

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Within the framework of phaenomenological expression of Post-teatro, la lucha con el ángel en el post-teatro. casts a hermeneutical light of a semiotic kind, establishing a connection between the mith of Jacob and an angel. Iconography and semantics are most impoitant for the understanding of Post-teatro, since they provide a conceptual system to support the persistence of artistic practice.

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

The problem of the crisis of the theatre turned out to be complex and of long elucidation. in …
