Designing And Implementing A Blended Learning Approach To Executive Scm Education: A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney
Designing And Implementing A Blended Learning Approach To Executive Scm Education: A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney
Conference papers
The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) is Ireland’s centre of excellence for supply chain management (SCM). As part of its mission to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish business, it designs and delivers executive modular learning programmes. In 2004, as part of a drive to create more flexible learning opportunities for course participants, NITL designed and implemented an eLearning programme, which involved converting traditionally tutored modules to online modules. This paper describes the rationale behind this initiative and the significance of technology as an enabling tool for executive education, as well as detailing the design …
Nonrelativistic Qed Approach To The Bound-Electron G Factor, Krzysztof Pachucki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Vladimir A. Yerokhin
Nonrelativistic Qed Approach To The Bound-Electron G Factor, Krzysztof Pachucki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Vladimir A. Yerokhin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Within a systematic approach based on nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics, we derive the one-loop self-energy correction of order α ( Z α )4 to the bound-electron g factor. In combination with numerical data, this analytic result improves theoretical predictions for the self-energy correction for carbon and oxygen by an order of magnitude. Basing on one-loop calculations, we obtain the logarithmic two-loop contribution of order α2 ( Z α )4 ln [ ( Z α )- 2 ] and the dominant part of the corresponding constant term. The results obtained improve the accuracy of the theoretical predictions for …
Nucleation Near The Spinodal: Limitations Of Mean Field Density Functional Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Jin-Song Li
Nucleation Near The Spinodal: Limitations Of Mean Field Density Functional Theory, Gerald Wilemski, Jin-Song Li
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the diverging size of the critical nucleus near the spinodal using the gradient theory ~GT! of van der Waals and Cahn and Hilliard and mean field density functional theory ~MFDFT!. As is well known, GT predicts that at the spinodal the free energy barrier to nucleation vanishes while the radius of the critical fluctuation diverges. We show numerically that the scaling behavior found by Cahn and Hilliard for these quantities holds quantitatively for both GT and MFDFT. We also show that the excess number of molecules Dg satisfies Cahn-Hilliard scaling near the spinodal and is consistent with the …
Combating Cry Wolf: The Effects Of Urgency And Reliability On Reactions To Verbal Alarms, Corey K. Fallon
Combating Cry Wolf: The Effects Of Urgency And Reliability On Reactions To Verbal Alarms, Corey K. Fallon
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Previous research has shown that manipulating the acoustic features of auditory alarms can alter their perceived urgency. Research has shown that increasing the perceived urgency of nonverbal auditory alarms can significantly improve response degradation due to alarm mistrust. This study determined if the effect of perceived urgency on response performance also applies to verbal alarm systems. Forty graduate and undergraduate psychology students from Old Dominion University were sampled for this study. The experimenter examined participant performance during four experimental sessions. After each session a twelve-item questionnaire designed to measure participants'rust in the alarm system was administered. Two conditions of urgency …
The Role Of Opt-Outs And Objectors In Class Action Litigation: Theoretical And Empirical Issues, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey Miller
The Role Of Opt-Outs And Objectors In Class Action Litigation: Theoretical And Empirical Issues, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey Miller
Vanderbilt Law Review
We study 236 cases in which we could ascertain quantitative in- formation about the number of objectors, 159 cases with quantitative information about the number of opt-outs, 205 cases with both the size of the class and the number of objectors, and 143 cases with both the size of the class and the number of opt-outs. Opt-outs from class participation and objections to class action resolution are rare: on average, less than 1 percent of class members opt-out, and about 1 percent of class members object to class-wide settlements. Opt-out-rates and objectorrates can be partly explained by observable factors in …
File Early, Then Free Ride: How Delaware Law (Mis)Shapes Shareholder Class Actions, Elliott J. Weiss, Lawrence J. White
File Early, Then Free Ride: How Delaware Law (Mis)Shapes Shareholder Class Actions, Elliott J. Weiss, Lawrence J. White
Vanderbilt Law Review
Delaware courts have largely privatized enforcement of fiduciary duties in public corporations. In In re Fuqua Industries, Inc. Shareholder Litigation, Chancellor Chandler expressly acknowledged this judicial policy. He noted that Delaware courts implement it partly by allowing private attorneys, working on a contingent fee basis, to initiate and maintain derivative and class actions in the names of "nominal shareholder plaintiffs." Attorneys are subject only to the relatively weak constraints that they must inform their "clients" and receive their consent before they file shareholder suits. Further, Delaware courts use cost and fee shifting mechanisms to "economically incentivize" those attorneys to initiate …
Mid-Decade Congressional Redistricting In A Red And Blue Nation, Patrick Marecki
Mid-Decade Congressional Redistricting In A Red And Blue Nation, Patrick Marecki
Vanderbilt Law Review
Following the 2002 elections, Republicans in Texas and Colorado achieved unified control of their state governments. In both states, Republicans introduced congressional redistricting legislation and enacted a new redistricting map. Just a year earlier, following the release of the decennial census, each state had enacted a congressional redistricting map that had governed the 2002 elections. The second round of legislation marked the first time in United States history that a state reopened redistricting for partisan political purposes after a redistricting plan had been adopted following the release of the decennial census, had been upheld as constitutional, and had been used …
Deformable Object Model Matching By Topological And Geometric Similarity, Kwok-Leung Tan, Rynson W. H. Lau, Chong-Wah Ngo
Deformable Object Model Matching By Topological And Geometric Similarity, Kwok-Leung Tan, Rynson W. H. Lau, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we present a novel method for efficient 3D model comparison. The method is designed to match highly deformed models through capturing two types of information. First, we propose a feature point extraction algorithm, which is based on “Level Set Diagram”, to reliably capture the topological points of a general 3D model. These topological points represent the skeletal structure of the model. Second, we also capture both spatial and curvature information, which describes the global surface of a 3D model. This is different from traditional topological 3D matching methods that use only low-dimension local features. Our method can …
Slow On The Trigger: The Department Of Fisheries And Oceans, The Fisheries Act And The Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, Arlene Kwasniak
Slow On The Trigger: The Department Of Fisheries And Oceans, The Fisheries Act And The Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, Arlene Kwasniak
Dalhousie Law Journal
The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans plays an Important role in protecting fish and fish habitat in Canada, primarily under the Fisheries Act. Section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act requires an environmental assessment when the Department takes certain actions under the Fisheries Act. In the past few years environmental interests have taken the Department to task claiming that it has circumvented assessment. The alleged circumvention occurs when proponents of projects that will harm fish habitat, in consultation with the Department, revamp the project to avoid harm, and the Department issues a letter of advice to the proponent …

We present a wide-field, subarcminute-resolution VLA image of the Galactic center region at 330 MHz. With a resolution of ~7'' × 12'' and an rms noise of 1.6 mJy beam-1, this image represents a significant increase in resolution and sensitivity over the previously published VLA image at this frequency. The improved sensitivity has more than tripled the census of small-diameter sources in the region, has resulted in the detection of two new nonthermal filaments (NTFs), 18 NTF candidates, and 30 pulsar candidates, reveals previously known extended sources in greater detail, and has resulted in the first detection of …

A Correlational Study Of The Effect Of Per Pupil Expenditure On Standardized Third Grade Reading Scores In Missouri, John Arthur Dunahm Jr.
Theses
Funding of education has long been a major topic of discussion in both the public and political arenas. How tax dollars are spent in the area of education is now at the forefront of this debate with the advent of mechanisms which are designed to hold schools accountable for their funding. The chief mechanism of accountability is standardized testing achievement by students.
In this study, per-pupil expenditures for schools districts in the state of Missouri, for the years 1998 and 2002, will be examined as a correlation to high student achievement on the Missouri Assessment Program third grade communication arts …

On The Nonparametric Identification Of Nonlinear Simultaneous Equations Models: Comment On B. Brown (1983) And Roehrig (1988), C. Lanier Benkard, Steven T. Berry
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This note revisits the identification theorems of B. Brown (1983) and Roehrig (1988). We describe an error in the proofs of the main identification theorems in these papers, and provide an important counterexample to the theorems on the identification of the reduced form. Specifically, contrary to the theorems, the reduced form of a nonseparable simultaneous equations model is not identified even under the assumptions of those papers. We conclude the note with a conjecture that it may be possible to use classical exclusion restrictions to recover some of the key implications of the theorems.

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers Using Finite Difference Frequency Domain Method, Md. Khalid Ikram
Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers Using Finite Difference Frequency Domain Method, Md. Khalid Ikram
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) allow guiding light in low-index core. These fibers exhibit properties such as single-mode operation in broad wavelength region. The mode shape and group velocity dispersion can be controlled by designing the microstructures of the cladding. In order to study these properties, a fast, efficient, and highly accurate numerical modeling method is required.
A full-vectorial finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method is implemented. The modal properties of conventional step index fiber and index-guiding PCF are analyzed using this modeling technique. Compared to plane wave expansion and biorthogonal basis methods, FDFD is found to be simple, reliable, and efficient. PCFs …
Preparing Teachers For Family Centered Services: A Survey Of Preservice Curriculum Content, Michelle Rupiper, Christine Marvin
Preparing Teachers For Family Centered Services: A Survey Of Preservice Curriculum Content, Michelle Rupiper, Christine Marvin
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
A family-centered approach is recommended as best practice in the field of early intervention. However, recent research suggests that some professionals in the field do not always implement familycentered services. This study investigated the content taught to pre-service early intervention/early childhood special education students regarding family-centered services. Eighty-two faculty members from institutions of higher education across the U.S. rated the importance of and the extent to which they taught five categories of content associated with family-centered services. Content associated with Knowledge of Families, IFSP/IEP Skills, and Respecting Diversity were taught significantly more than Communication Skills and Knowledge of Team Work. …

A View Of Sudanese Refugee Resettlement Through Nebraska’S Print Media, Mary Willis, Constance Fernald
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The print media has the potential to educate the general public about newly arriving Great Plains populations, influence refugee resettlement programs, and motivate volunteers to assist in transitions. Thus, accuracy of news items is crucial to successful assimilation of new populations to host communities. In this paper, we provide results from a content analysis of eight Nebraska newspapers regarding Sudanese refugees. We focus on refugee population descriptors, cultural characteristics, resettlement issues, and refugee goals to determine what could be learned about refugees from Sudan if one used local print media. Consistent with theories of stereotyping, results suggest that limited, and …

Review Of Grave Injustice: The American Indian Repatriation Movement And Nagpra By Kathleen S. Fine-Dare, James Riding In
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Fine-Dare tells the story of the American Indian movement to recover human remains and cultural objects taken from them by non-Indians for the purposes of study, display, and profit from the viewpoint of an anthropologist supportive of Indian issues who wants her profession used in a more positive way regarding Native peoples. To her, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) is a means for understanding boarder historical currents invol ving the treatment of Indians, whether bad, good, or indifferent. She argues that relating this history is vital for fathoming the complexities of repatriation that began during the …

Johne’S Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, And Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis, Ofelia Barletta-Chacon, Luiz E. Bermudez, Raúl G. Barletta
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Johne’s disease is a chronic diarrhea affecting all ruminants. Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), a slowly growing mycobacteria, is the etiologic agent. There is also a concern that MAP might be a causative agent of some cases of inflammatory bowel disease in humans, especially Crohn’s disease. Food products including pasteurized bovine milk have been suggested as potential sources of human infection. This review addresses microbial factors that may contribute to its pathogenicity. In addition, the experimental evidence defining MAP as the cause of Johne’s disease and the issues and controversies surrounding its potential pathogenic role in humans are discussed.

Kenneth Bloom Publications
We report a measurement of the tt̅ production cross section using dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using a 197±12 pb-1 data sample recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab, we use two complementary techniques to select candidate events. We compare the number of observed events and selected kinematical distributions with the predictions of the standard model and find good agreement. The combined result of the two techniques yields a tt̅ production cross section of 7.0-2.1+2.4 (stat) -1.1+1.6 (syst)±0.4(lum) pb.

A Template-Based Conceptual Modeling Infrastructure For Simulation Of Physical Security Systems, Paul Savory
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Although simulation is one of the most innovative and cost-effective tools for modeling and analyzing a system, simulation studies often fail to provide any useful results. One reason is attributed to the fact that model formulation depends on the skills of the analyst. This paper describes a research to develop a conceptual modeling infrastructure to assist a simulation analyst in specifying components for studying physical security systems. The modeling framework has been programmed as an internet-based web application. Using the application, the successful development and implementation of a physical security simulation model will be aided by a defined scientific methodology …

Irbism: Prejudice Against Institutional Review Boards, Donelson R. Forsyth
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Alexander Pope, who opined that "the proper study of man is man," did not have to convince an Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the wisdom of his words. Just this week I was told that I could not use the question "What city does your romantic partner live in?" to check if the subject was in a long-distant relationship (made the partner too identifiable). Earlier in the year a reviewer objected to asking students about their mother and father's parenting style (reports on the behavior of unconsented third parties). When I said I would recruit participants from classes, the reviewer …
