The Role Of Identity In Language Acquisition: A Cross- Generational Perspective., Darlene Annette Snider
The Role Of Identity In Language Acquisition: A Cross- Generational Perspective., Darlene Annette Snider
MA TESOL Collection
In this paper I will reflect on the role of identity as it relates to second language acquisition. My hypothesis is that second language acquisition can be slowed or even halted when students cannot adapt to the culture of the language they are studying. Student’s facing cultural conflict tend to distance themselves from the community thereby creating barriers in the learning process. This hypothesis is based upon my own experience as a third generation Canadian. I believe the effective classroom will work to reduce cultural conflict by affirming the learner’s cultural identity and sense of self as they explore the …

Will The Correct Legal Standard Please Step Forward: When Should An Employer's Affirmative Duty Under Erisa To Disclose Potential Plan Changes Kick-In?, Sandra L. Sprott
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
In sum, this Comment examines whether ERISA imposes an affirmative obligation on employer-fiduciaries to disclose proposed changes in their employee benefits plans and when that duty to disclose arises. Part II provides a historical perspective of ERISA and the duty to disclose. Part III examines when an employer is considered a fiduciary under ERISA. Part IV explains ERISA's reporting and disclosure requirements and its impact on the duty to disclose proposed changes. Part V takes into consideration the duty of loyalty. Part VI analyzes the two conflicting standards. Ultimately, after a detailed analysis, Part VII of this Comment concludes that …

Valuing Inside Knowledge: Police Infiltration As A Problem For The Law Of Evidence, Jacqueline E. Ross
Chicago-Kent Law Review
It is well-known that undercover investigations influence and sometimes distort the crimes they seek to expose. This is the problem which the entrapment defense is designed to address. What has not yet been recognized, however, is that the investigator's influence on crimes is also a problem of evidence. This Article notes that undercover policing can be used to prove crimes that the investigator influences (which I term "contrived offenses") as well as crimes that occur independently of the government's intervention (what I call "independent crimes"). The ease of documenting the former tempts investigators to forego the arduous task of proving …

Third Extrusion Project: Project Analysis, Ingrid Suarez
Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects
This paper uses a case study approach to analyze the Third Extrusion Project (TEP) in Cerro Matoso S.A (CMSA). The TEP was chosen to be analyzed because of the importance to the company, the quality of the project management, and the impact in CMSA’s business. The analysis was focused on the managerial and organizational aspects, rather than on technical topics. It was based on the Strategic Project Leadership framework proposed by Dr. Aaron Shedar.
BHP Billiton, the parent organization of CMSA, is one of the world’s premier mining companies. Its project management office aims to ensure that the project management …

A Pre-Post -Retention Approach To Assess And Assure Learning In A Business Statistics Course And Beyond, David Roach, Loretta F. Cochran
Faculty Publications - The LeMoyne Smith School of Business
Introduction
Validation of learning has long been pursued by programs that desire to confirm the transfer of knowledge (Mirchandani, Lynch, and Hamilton, 2001). Moreover, pressure from accrediting agencies has led universities and business schools to increase their attention to assessment and assurance of learning. From the perspective of the university, the assessment continuum ranges from institutional measures to program measures to course measures. While each point on this continuum uses similar methodologies and are highly dependent, each level should have a different group of stakeholders (Huba and Freed, 2000). In this paper, we describe an approach to assess and assure …

Feminising Prehistory, David Oldroyd
Feminising Prehistory, David Oldroyd
Accounting Historians Notebook
In a recent paper Oldroyd (2003) explored the idea, first gaining ground in the 19th century, that a time once existed in prehistory when society was universally matriarchal, and counting and calculation were the exclusive preserves of women. Despite the extreme antiquity of the subject, making proof difficult, there is some supporting evidence. The topic is noteworthy for a number of reasons, not least because it suggests an earlier place for women in the history of accounting than is usually acknowledged. In speculating that the first reckoning/accounting devices - a series of notched bone awls dating from the Upper Paleolithic …

China’s ethnic and geographic diversity makes the task of examining the implementation of national policy nearly impossible. As more than 70% of the population lives outside urban areas, narrowing the field to rural governance does not whittle down the subject matter to any great degree. However, the vastness of the topic is precisely why it is so vital to developing a coherent understanding of the country – knowing how a majority of the Chinese population interacts with local government sheds a great deal of light on the status of political reform in China today.
Many of the problems plaguing Chinese …

Wetland Basins For Saline Drainage Water Disposal Bodallin And Elachbutting Catchments, Eastern Wheatbelt, Western Australia, P De Broekert, N Coles
Resource management technical reports
This report provides an assessment of two large deep drainage schemes within the lower reaches of the Bodallin and Elachbutting Catchments nearby Merredin in Western Australia, wherein groups of isolated wetland basins have been utilised for evaporative saline drainage water disposal. In both cases, the storage capacity of the basins has been exceeded, leading to flooding and death of the surrounding native vegetation.
