A Curriculum Plan Based On A Sung Dynasty Landscape Artist's Work And Techniques, Lindsey R. Terbrack

Honors Theses

This paper explores Sung Dynasty landscape paintings with focused attention on the works of Yen Wen-kuei. Comparison to Western art is apparent throughout the paper as an aide in using this information to create a unit of study suitable for high school art. The paper focuses around the context of the time period, materials used, style, presentation, viewer involvement, technique and thought process. The exemplar of Yen Wen-kuei is then dissected to give tangible evidence to the study.

Referent Selection Strategies In Case-Crossover Analyses Of Air Pollution Exposure Data: Implications For Bias, Holly Janes, Lianne Sheppard, Thomas Lumley Dec 2004

Referent Selection Strategies In Case-Crossover Analyses Of Air Pollution Exposure Data: Implications For Bias, Holly Janes, Lianne Sheppard, Thomas Lumley

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The case-crossover design has been widely used to study the association between short term air pollution exposure and the risk of an acute adverse health event. The design uses cases only, and, for each individual, compares exposure just prior to the event with exposure at other control, or “referent” times. By making within-subject comparisons, time invariant confounders are controlled by design. Even more important in the air pollution setting is that, by matching referents to the index time, time varying confounders can also be controlled by design. Yet, the referent selection strategy is important for reasons other than control of …

Reducing The Stereotypic Behavior Of Individuals With Mental Retardation Using Response Cost Within Applied Behavior Analysis, Crystal Holmes Dec 2004

Reducing The Stereotypic Behavior Of Individuals With Mental Retardation Using Response Cost Within Applied Behavior Analysis, Crystal Holmes

Theses & Honors Papers

The focus of this study is to demonstrate that using response cost through applied behavior analysis is an effective treatment for reducing the stereotypic behaviors of individuals with mental retardation. McEntee and Saunders (1997) conducted a study in which response cost was used as an intervention within applied behavior analysis successfully to reduce the stereotypic behaviors in four male individuals with severe or profound mental retardation. An attempt was made to replicate this study and provide further research on the effects of response cost through applied behavior analysis on the stereotypic behaviors of individuals with mental retardation. There were three …

Evidence For Supernova Light In All Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow, A. Zeh, S. Klose, Dieter H. Hartmann Dec 2004

Evidence For Supernova Light In All Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow, A. Zeh, S. Klose, Dieter H. Hartmann

Publications

We present an update of our systematic analyses of all Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow data, now published through the end of 2004, in an attempt to detect the predicted supernova light component. We fit the observed photometric light curves as the sum of an afterglow, an underlying host galaxy, and a supernova component. The latter is modeled using published UBV RI light curves of SN 1998bw as a template. The total sample of afterglows with established redshifts contains now 29 bursts (GRB 970228 - GRB 041006). For 13 of them a weak supernova excess (scaled to SN 1998bw) was found. …

The Strange Physics Of Low Frequency Mirror Mode Turbulence In The High Temperature Plasma Of The Magnetosheath, R. A. Treumann, C. H. Jaroschek, O. D. Constantinescu, R. Nakamura Dec 2004

The Strange Physics Of Low Frequency Mirror Mode Turbulence In The High Temperature Plasma Of The Magnetosheath, R. A. Treumann, C. H. Jaroschek, O. D. Constantinescu, R. Nakamura

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mirror mode turbulence is the lowest frequency perpendicular magnetic excitation in magnetized plasma proposed already about half a century ago by Rudakov and Sagdeev (1958) and Chandrasekhar et al. (1958) from fluid theory. Its experimental verification required a relatively long time. It was early recognized that mirror modes for being excited require a transverse pressure (or temperature) anisotropy. In principle mirror modes are some version of slow mode waves. Fluid theory, however, does not give a correct physical picture of the mirror mode. The linear infinitesimally small amplitude physics is described correctly only by including the full kinetic theory and …

New Product Launch Decisions Under Competition And Uncertainty: A Real Options And Game-Theoretic Approach To New Product Development, James O. Ostler Dec 2004

New Product Launch Decisions Under Competition And Uncertainty: A Real Options And Game-Theoretic Approach To New Product Development, James O. Ostler

Theses and Dissertations

New product development is central to many firms' future success. Not only as a means to continue to maintain their piece of the market, but product development can also be a strategic means for a company to diversify, and/or alter focus to adapt to changing market conditions.

Most of the research in new product development has been on how to do it cheaper and faster than the next guy. However, early commercialization does not guarantee a position of strength in the market. Failures of EMI in CT scanners and Xerox in personal computers illustrate that being first to market does …

Single crystals of the lanthanide-containing iridate, disamarium sodium iridium hexaoxide, Sm2NaIrO6, were prepared via high-temperature flux growth and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n and is a double perovskite, consisting of a 1:1 ordered rock-salt-type lattice of corner-shared NaO6 and IrO6 distorted octahedra. Samarium occupies the eightfold coordination site generated by the connectivity of the octahedra.

A Comparative Analysis Of Proportional-Integral Compensated Shunt Active Power Filters, Matthew Alan Gray Dec 2004

A Comparative Analysis Of Proportional-Integral Compensated Shunt Active Power Filters, Matthew Alan Gray

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis deals primarily with the simulation and analysis of shunt active power filters (APF) on a three-phase power distribution system possessing a harmonic generating load. The shunt active power filters are analyzed based on effective total harmonic distortion (THD) levels and response to changing dynamics. These results are derived from the simulation of a pulse-width modulation (PWM) controlled voltage source inverter (VSI) with a capacitor connected to the DC side of the VSI. The primary difference between individual simulations is the particular control law implemented in the shunt APF.

Analysis Of The Design And Operation Of Mix-Bank Resequencing Areas, Arunkumar Subramanian Dec 2004

Analysis Of The Design And Operation Of Mix-Bank Resequencing Areas, Arunkumar Subramanian

Theses and Dissertations

Automotive assembly plants work on a pre-planned job sequence in order to optimize the performance of the assembly line. However, the job sequence becomes scrambled due to factors such as plant layout, process design, variability and uncertainty. Assembly plants use either a mix-bank or an automatic storage and retrieval system to regenerate the sequence before final assembly. A mix-bank, which is a set of parallel lanes, is the most common method used in the automotive industry to reconstruct the sequence. Only the first vehicles on the lanes are available for sequencing in a mix-bank set-up. Hence the lane selection policy …

A Hybrid Model For Dtm Generation From Lidar Data, Hyun Seung Lee Dec 2004

A Hybrid Model For Dtm Generation From Lidar Data, Hyun Seung Lee

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation introduces an innovative technique to extract ground elevation models using smallootprint LIDAR data. This technique consists of a preprocessing step, ground modeling, and interpolation. In the preprocessing step, much of the non-terrain points are eliminated using a histogram-based clustering technique. Then, in the ground modeling stage, the information such as elevation and slope between nearest neighbor points is extracted. This step corresponds to an outlier detection process. In this stage, residuals and gradient indices for elevation and slope, are introduced. These indices are investigated for a constructed 95% confidence interval to discard the remaining non-terrain points. Finally, using …

Distributed Generation Impact On Fault Response Of A Distrubution [I.E., Distribution] Network, Venkata Ramanujam Kanduri Dec 2004

Distributed Generation Impact On Fault Response Of A Distrubution [I.E., Distribution] Network, Venkata Ramanujam Kanduri

Theses and Dissertations

Electric power systems are a key infrastructure today. Power systems can be divided into three major parts: generation, transmission, and distribution. Out of these the distribution system is the most complex part and least studied system. In order to have continuous and reliable power to all customers it is necessary to have a good protection system. Major disturbances that are caused and last for a very short duration are called faults. With the advent of distributed generation (DG), the understanding of fault response has become more difficult. This thesis presents the study of the fault response and the factors that …

Predicting Open-Source Software Quality Using Statistical And Machine Learning Techniques, Amit Ashok Phadke

Theses and Dissertations

Developing high quality software is the goal of every software development organization. Software quality models are commonly used to assess and improve the software quality. These models, based on the past releases of the system, can be used to identify the fault-prone modules for the next release. This information is useful to the open-source software community, including both developers and users. Developers can use this information to clean or rebuild the faulty modules thus enhancing the system. The users of the software system can make informed decisions about the quality of the product. This thesis builds quality models using logistic …
