The Great Divide: Considering Section 157a Of The Singapore Companies Act, Pearlie Koh Jan 2004

The Great Divide: Considering Section 157a Of The Singapore Companies Act, Pearlie Koh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The manner in which the powers of a company are carved out to be exercised by either the general meeting of shareholders or its board of directors is often a matter of interpretation of the constitution of the company. This approach retains a fair amount of flexibility in the differing models of power allocation that may be adopted by incorporators, but once carved out, the power allocation usually remains sacrosanct until such time as the constitution is validly altered. This was the position in Singapore before 2003. In 2003, the Companies Act of Singapore was amended to include s 157A, …

Ten carers were interviewed regarding their experiences of providing care to the family member during the palliative phase of the illness and while the family member was experiencing the symptom of dyspnoea. Analysis of the initial data highlighted …

Husserl's Phenomenological Reduction Revisited: An Attempt Of A Renewed Account, Sebastian Luft Jan 2004

Husserl's Phenomenological Reduction Revisited: An Attempt Of A Renewed Account, Sebastian Luft

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This essay attempts a renewed, critical exposition of Husserl’s theory of the phenomenological reduction, incorporating manuscript material that has been published since the defining essays of the first generation of Husserl research. The discussion focuses on points that remain especially crucial, i. e. the concept of the natural attitude, the ways into the reduction, and the question of the “meaning of the reduction”. The reading attempted here leads to two, not necessarily related, focal points: a Cartesian and a Life-world tendency. In following these two paths, Husserl was consistent in pursuing two evident leads in his philosophical enterprise; however, he …

Linux Kernel Support For Micro-Heterogeneous Computing, Kim R. Schuttenberg

Theses

Heterogeneous Computing (HC) is a technique speeds the computation of large tasks by utilizing multiple computers or supercomputers, each of which is best suited to a particular type of computation. Micro-Heterogeneous Computing (MHC) has been proposed to bring this practice to individual computers. With the aid of the higher speed, short distance interconnects found within the next generation of personal computers and commodity servers, it should be possible to apply HC to relatively small grain sizes. MHC draws on the observations that in order for a new computing technology to become widely accepted, and cost effective, there must be a …

Brand Color Tolerances: A Comparison Of Memory Color Vs. Paired Comparison Color Matching, Allison K. Santoro Jan 2004

Brand Color Tolerances: A Comparison Of Memory Color Vs. Paired Comparison Color Matching, Allison K. Santoro

Theses

The proposed thesis topic is to compare two methods of judging brand colors, paired comparison and memory color. Today's current practice for press approval in the graphic arts industry involves an individual using a sensitive comparison of a proof to a press sheet. The resulting piece is later viewed by a user who will have no knowledge of the original (a proof). The exception, however, is the memory of the "logo" or brand color that the user may have. The argument can be made that the additional cost of a press approval is justified by the possibility of accruing extra …

The Role Of Advertising Agencies On The Demand For Personalized Communications, Kathryn C. Moore Jan 2004

The Role Of Advertising Agencies On The Demand For Personalized Communications, Kathryn C. Moore

Adhesion Of Copper To Polytetrafluoroethylene Surfaces Modified With Vacuum Uv Radiation Downstream From He And Ar Microwave Plasmas, Hrishikesh R. Desai Jan 2004

Adhesion Of Copper To Polytetrafluoroethylene Surfaces Modified With Vacuum Uv Radiation Downstream From He And Ar Microwave Plasmas, Hrishikesh R. Desai

Theses

Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is an attractive material for insulating layers between conductors, such as copper, in the packaging of high-performance electronic devices because of its excellent thermal and chemical properties and its low dielectric constant. Strong adhesion between copper and PTFE is difficult to develop because perfluorinated materials are hydrophobic, relatively inert chemically and possess low surface energies, thus accounting for their non-stick behavior. Since vacuum UV radiation (VUV) is of current interest in the production of small feature sizes on polymer surfaces using photolithography, investigations were conducted to study the ability of plasma generated VUV radiation to control the adhesion …

Efficient Human Facial Pose Estimation, James C. Schimmel Jan 2004

Efficient Human Facial Pose Estimation, James C. Schimmel

Theses

Pose estimation has become an increasingly important area in computer vision and more specifically in human facial recognition and activity recognition for surveillance applications. Pose estimation is a process by which the rotation, pitch, or yaw of a human head is determined. Numerous methods already exist which can determine the angular change of a face, however, these methods vary in accuracy and their computational requirements tend to be too high for real-time applications. The objective of this thesis is to develop a method for pose estimation, which is computationally efficient, while still maintaining a reasonable degree of accuracy. In this …

Goal Directed Visual Search Based On Color Cues: Co-Operative Effectes Of Top-Down & Bottom-Up Visual Attention, Vishal S. Vaingankar

Theses

Focus of Attention plays an important role in perception of the visual environment. Certain objects stand out in the scene irrespective of observers' goals. This form of attention capture, in which stimulus feature saliency captures our attention, is of a bottom-up nature. Often prior knowledge about objects and scenes can influence our attention. This form of attention capture, which is influenced by higher level knowledge about the objects, is called top-down attention. Top-down attention acts as a feedback mechanism for the feed-forward bottom-up attention. Visual search is a result of a combined effort of the top-down (cognitive cue) system and …

Hierarchies Of Harm In Canadian Criminal Law: The Marijuana Trilogy And The Forcible 'Correction' Of Children, Janine Benedet Jan 2004

Hierarchies Of Harm In Canadian Criminal Law: The Marijuana Trilogy And The Forcible 'Correction' Of Children, Janine Benedet

All Faculty Publications

The author examines the seemingly contradictory Supreme Court of Canada decisions which upheld the prohibition on possession of marijuana (R. v. Malmo-Levine), yet allowed the defence of “reasonable correction” for parents and teachers charged with assaulting a child (Canadian Foundation for Children, Youth and the Law v. Canada (Attorney General)). She argues that these two decisions speak to the limits of the criminal law and the role that section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms plays in setting those limits. These decisions are also linked by the attempt by some members of the Court to establish a …

Aedpa's "Adjudication On The Merits" Requirement: Collateral Review, Federalism, And Comity, Robert D. Sloane

Faculty Scholarship

The modern law of federal habeas corpus is a labyrinth of counterfactuals and arcane procedural hurdles that few state petitioners manage to navigate-as Justice Blackmun once wrote less charitably in dissent, "a Byzantine morass of arbitrary, unnecessary, and unjustifiable impediments to the vindication of federal rights." The convoluted inquiries required arise from the need to reconcile three developments of the past four decades that remain in tension with one another: first, the Warren Court's expansion of federal habeas relief, identified with Fay v. Noia and its progeny; second, the Burger and Rehnquist Courts' curtailment of that expansion, identified with Wainwright …

Do We Have A Right To Speak With Another's Language? Eldred And The Duration Of Copyright, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The law embodies two contradictory sets of rights and interests pertaining to copyright and speech. On the one hand. stand authors' claims to deserve compensation and control over their works. On the other hand stand the public's claims to be free to build on and deploy the cultural works that pervade daily life.
