Classroom Structure As An Environmental Effect On Creative Production Of College Students, Krista A. Coulter '04 Jan 2004

Classroom Structure As An Environmental Effect On Creative Production Of College Students, Krista A. Coulter '04

Honors Projects

Little research has been done to explore creativity in the classroom environment. The present study investigated the effects of three classroom settings (formal, intermediate, and informal) on the creative production of college students. Ninety students were tested using Sternberg and Lubart's (1995) Creativity Assessments both before and after participation in a teaching session. No significant changes were found between classes mean creativity scores after the experimental session. In the intermediate classroom, there was a significant decrease in scores before and after the session; however, in the other two classrooms, formal and informal, there was no significant change found.

User Authentication And Supervision In Networked Systems, Paul Steven Dowland Jan 2004

User Authentication And Supervision In Networked Systems, Paul Steven Dowland

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis considers the problem of user authentication and supervision in networked systems. The issue of user authentication is one of on-going concern in modem IT systems with the increased use of computer systems to store and provide access to sensitive information resources. While the traditional username/password login combination can be used to protect access to resources (when used appropriately), users often compromise the security that these methods can provide. While alternative (and often more secure) systems are available, these alternatives usually require expensive hardware to be purchased and integrated into IT systems. Even if alternatives are available (and financially …

Affordance, Attention And Laterality, Lari Vainio Jan 2004

Affordance, Attention And Laterality, Lari Vainio

School of Psychology Theses

This thesis examines object-guided actions. Recently, micro-affordance effects have shown that a visual object affords actions automatically. These effects are observed when the grasp type (precision and power grasp) is facilitated by size (small and large) of the categorized object (the object-size effect), or when right or left hand responses are facilitated by object orientation (the object-orientation effect). It has been shown elsewhere that attentional mechanisms have a vital role in visually guided movements. In addition, visually guided movements have associated with hemispheric lateralization. Thus, the central focus of the thesis was the role of different components of attention (location-based-, …

Advanced User Authentification For Mobile Devices, Nathan Clarke Jan 2004

Advanced User Authentification For Mobile Devices, Nathan Clarke

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Recent years have witnessed widespread adoption of mobile devices. Whereas initial popularity was driven by voice telephony services, capabilities are now broadening to allow an increasing range of data orientated services. Such services serve to extend the range of sensitive data accessible through such devices and will in turn increase the requirement for reliable authentication of users. This thesis considers the authentication requirements of mobile devices and proposes novel mechanisms to improve upon the current state of the art. The investigation begins with an examination of existing authentication techniques, and illustrates a wide range of drawbacks. A survey of end-users …

Deconstructing The Tower Of London : Resolution, Alternatives And Executive Function, Hassina Carder-Gilbert Jan 2004

Deconstructing The Tower Of London : Resolution, Alternatives And Executive Function, Hassina Carder-Gilbert

School of Psychology Theses

Although widely employed as an executive task, the performance demands of the Tower of London task (TOL) are not well understood. The aim of this Thesis is to determine what TOL measures and seven studies are included that illustrate its performance demands. Much of the work is experimental and TOL is explored via a novel verification paradigm in which participants make speeded judgements about whether a demonstrated move is optimal or suboptimal. The deconstruction of the task to the level of the individual move indicated that the number of moves until a disk was placed in its goal position (resolution) …

You Say You Want A Revolution:Music In Advertising And Pseudo-Counterculture, Alan Bradshaw, Roger Sherlock, Pierre Mcdonagh Jan 2004

You Say You Want A Revolution:Music In Advertising And Pseudo-Counterculture, Alan Bradshaw, Roger Sherlock, Pierre Mcdonagh

Conference papers

Using the example of the song Revolution by the Beatles and its use in a TV ad for Nike, this paper explores the conference theme of the impact of marketing and marketing systems in society from the subtheme of art and aesthetics in markets. We consider the role of music in advertisements as the appropriation and negation of counterculture against Adorno & Horkheimer’s critique of the commodification form of the music itself independent of appropriation. The paper considers these research problematics from the perspective of the musicians themselves.

Expanding Tree Adjoining Grammar To Create Junction Grammar Trees, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Ronald Millett Jan 2004

Expanding Tree Adjoining Grammar To Create Junction Grammar Trees, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Ronald Millett

Faculty Publications

Junction Grammar (JG) combines junction operators, multiple linked syntax/semantics trees, and flexible traversal algorithms. The multiple tree and flexible ordering characteristics of MC-TAG and other TAG extensions are somewhat analogous. This paper proposes that these similarities can be integrated to form a new approach, JG-TAG. Relevant aspects of both theories and the proposed new model are discussed in turn, and representative examples are sketched.

Ten Efficient Research Strategies For Distance Learning, Thomas C. Wright, Scott L. Howell Jan 2004

Ten Efficient Research Strategies For Distance Learning, Thomas C. Wright, Scott L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Today's distance education administrator, frequently with an expertise in another academic discipline, is also supposed to be a distance education scholar. This expectation results from the recent interest in distance learning that nearly all institutions of learning and disciplines of study have shown. More research, studies, journals, and essays about distance education also exist than at any other time.

A distance education administrator and an education research librarian at Brigham Young University have teamed up to identify ten pragmatic research strategies to help new, busy, and even a few experienced distance education administrators stay current in their field and successful …

An Examination Of The Mechanisms Of Action In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bulimia Nervosa, Scott A. Baldwin, Diane L. Spangler, W. Stewart Agras Jan 2004

An Examination Of The Mechanisms Of Action In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bulimia Nervosa, Scott A. Baldwin, Diane L. Spangler, W. Stewart Agras

Faculty Publications

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa (BN) has received consid- erable empirical support for its efficacy. However, few investigators have examined the mechanisms proposed to account for the reduction of BN symptoms during CBT. The current study examined the associations between therapist interventions, client mechanisms, and symptoms during treatment in a sample of 56 clients under- going CBT for BN. Results suggested that behavioral interventions were most asso- ciated with symptom change during treatment whereas relational interventions were most associated with change in client mechanisms such as client engagement. Addi- tionally, some changes in BN symptoms were mediated by changes …

Fabrication Or Induction Of Illness In A Child: A Critical Review Of Labels And Literature Using Electronic Libraries, Kenneth Burns Jan 2004

Fabrication Or Induction Of Illness In A Child: A Critical Review Of Labels And Literature Using Electronic Libraries, Kenneth Burns

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper argues that the variance between professionals on the use of terminology to describe and define this form of child maltreatment may lead to a loss of focus on children's welfare. The author argues that the label Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy has outlived its use and recommends the adoption of a new label 'Fabrication or Induction of Illness in a Child'. The article presents a critical analysis of the titles of 41 0 unique library entries collated from electronic libraries to discern the prevalence of labels to denote the fabrication or induction of illness in children. The article also …

Whether specific patterns of parenting are similarly associated with child outcomes in diverse cultural contexts has been a topic of inquiry for the past several decades. Most recently, attention has focused on Asian parenting and the indigenous meanings of parental control among specific Asian groups as contrasted with Western cultures (Chao & Tseng, 2002). Recent debates in this literature center on whether coercive parenting has similar meanings for mainland Chinese and North American children and their parents (e.g., Grusec, 2002; Lau & Yeung, 1996). To further address the question of whether there is a universal nature to parenting and its …

Can Promise Enforcement Save Affordable Housing In The United States? Jan 2004

Can Promise Enforcement Save Affordable Housing In The United States?

San Diego Law Review

Promise Enforcement is my original approach to the development of affordable housing. Promise Enforcement, as a system, includes three components: (1) contextual thinking; (2) valuing individuality, and (3) comprehensive responsibility. Contextual thinking involves a sense of environmental, historical, and geographic context. Valuing individuality allows residents of public housing to express themselves as unique individuals. Comprehensive responsibility involves a complete understanding of the costs and benefits of affordable housing. The theory was inspired in part by the work of Austrian activist, artist, and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and the writings of French social contract theorist Jean-Jacques Rousseau. My article that introduced the …

Likelihood Of Confusion Jan 2004

Likelihood Of Confusion

San Diego Law Review

The primary objective of this Article is to illustrate the tendency of judges to inappropriately rely on personal intuition and subjective, internalized stereotypes when ruling on trademark disputes. Where jurists perceive consumers as ludicrously easily confused, trademark holders can exploit these views to secure broad trademark “rights,” often without offering a shred of evidentiary corroboration concerning such confusion. As a consequence, the proof required to support allegations that a trademark usage creates a likelihood of confusion is potentially lessened in all cases, making trademarks normatively stronger, broader, and ever easier to “protect” for mark holders. Whether consumers realistically benefit from …

In The Wake Of Enzo: The Impact Of The Federal Circuit’S Decision On The U.S. Life Science Industry Jan 2004

In The Wake Of Enzo: The Impact Of The Federal Circuit’S Decision On The U.S. Life Science Industry

San Diego Law Review

The United States spends more on health care than any other country in the world. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) helps drive health care costs higher by awarding monopolies to scientific researchers whose inventions meet the requirements dictated by Title 35 of the U.S. Code.3 Once the PTO awards such a monopoly, the inventor is the only party legally entitled to make, use, or sell the invention in the United States. Though monopolies are thought to impair competition, under the U.S. system these exclusionary rights are the rewards an inventor earns in exchange for enriching the pool of publicly …

Obstructing Justice: The Rise And Fall Of The Aedpa Jan 2004

Obstructing Justice: The Rise And Fall Of The Aedpa

San Diego Law Review

From 1994 through as late as August 2001, the United States intelligence community1

received information that terrorists had seriously contemplated using airplanes as instruments for carrying out international terrorist attacks.2

This method of attack was clearly “discussed in terrorist circles,” yet community analysts demonstrated little effort to strategically counter such terrorist groups. Moreover, in 1998, U.S. intelligence received specific information that “a group of unidentified Arabs planned to fly an explosive-laden plane from a foreign country into the World Trade Center.” In July 2001, senior government officials were warned of “a significant terrorist attack against U.S. and/or Israeli interests in …

On-Road Motor Vehicle Emissions From Around The World, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop Jan 2004

On-Road Motor Vehicle Emissions From Around The World, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

In 1993, on-road emissions in Continental Europe showed a pronounced South/North declining gradient for CO, HC and NO fuel specific emissions (gm/kg). Emissions in Hamburg and Rotterdam were comparable to emissions measured in 1993 in the U.S.A. with the same on-road instrument. Contrasts between emissions in the USA, the UK and Sweden demonstrated the importance both of modern catalysts and of good maintenance. The same contrast in 1998 shows the same picture but lower emissions at all three locations. In the decade from 1993-2003, U.S. emissions have declined markedly, apparently mainly as a result of lower emitting, better maintained, new …

Classifying And Responding To Network Intrusions, Maria Papadaki Jan 2004

Classifying And Responding To Network Intrusions, Maria Papadaki

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Intrusion detection systems (IDS) have been widely adopted within the IT community, as passive monitoring tools that report security related problems to system administrators. However, the increasing number and evolving complexity of attacks, along with the growth and complexity of networking infrastructures, has led to overwhelming numbers of IDS alerts, which allow significantly smaller timeframe for a human to respond. The need for automated response is therefore very much evident. However, the adoption of such approaches has been constrained by practical limitations and administrators' consequent mistrust of systems' abilities to issue appropriate responses. The thesis presents a thorough analysis of …

Guidance And Control Of An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Wasif Naeem Jan 2004

Guidance And Control Of An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Wasif Naeem

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A cooperative project between the Universities of Plymouth and Cranfield was aimed at designing and developing an autonomous underwater vehicle named Hammerhead. The work presented herein is to formulate an advance guidance and control system and to implement it in the Hammerhead. This involves the description of Hammerhead hardware from a control system perspective. In addition to the control system, an intelligent navigation scheme and a state of the art vision system is also developed. However, the development of these submodules is out of the scope of this thesis. To model an underwater vehicle, the traditional way is to acquire …

Microstructures By Design: Linear Problems In Elastic-Plastic Design, Brent L. Adams, B. Henrie, M. Lyon Jan 2004

Microstructures By Design: Linear Problems In Elastic-Plastic Design, Brent L. Adams, B. Henrie, M. Lyon

Faculty Publications

Materials microstructure is considered to be a design variable in the methodology called microstructure sensitive design (MSD). Based upon existing homogenization relations, relating the first-order representation of microstructure (the local state distribution function) to elastic and yield properties, the paper describes the construction of properties closures. These establish the theoretically-possible combinations of properties achievable by the set of all possible microstructures, which is called the microstructure hull. Exemplary homogenization relations are shown to be, typically, hypersurfaces (often hyperplanes) in the Fourier space in which the microstructure hull resides. All points lying on (or to one side of) the hypersurface, that …

To Cover Ancient Prejudice With The Palladium Of Scientific Argument: Women, Reproduction, Pseudo-Science, And The Alarm Of Race Suicide, 1870-1915, Sarah Hamilton '04 Jan 2004

To Cover Ancient Prejudice With The Palladium Of Scientific Argument: Women, Reproduction, Pseudo-Science, And The Alarm Of Race Suicide, 1870-1915, Sarah Hamilton '04

Honors Projects, History

In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt presented the decreasing size of native born American families to Congress as "one of the greatest sociological phenomena of our time" and of"far greater importance than any mere political or economic question," although by that time the size of the American family had been shrinking steadily for about a century. He condemned the tendency towards smaller families as decadent, a sign of moral disease and, like others who worried about "race suicide," he specifically condemned women by categorizing those who avoided large families as criminals against the race and the objects of detestation by healthy, …

Applications Of Simulation In Semiconductor Manufacturing Facilities, Amr Arisha, Paul Young Jan 2004

Applications Of Simulation In Semiconductor Manufacturing Facilities, Amr Arisha, Paul Young

Conference papers

Semiconductor fabrication facilities face many challenges through the many phases of their life cycle including design, build, various production ramps, and many levels of production. Confronted with global competition and rapidly changing technology and customer requirements, there is an increasing demand for rapid solution techniques to improve efficiency in manufacturing. The complexities and forces of both market and the process combine to make the use of simulation crucial at many different planning and control levels. While not a panacea for sustainable performance, simulation provides an effective vehicle for defining the path from competitive concepts to real world solutions and gives …

Quality Assurance Of Cervical Smear Slide Inspection Using A Novel Eye-Tracking Technique, Lee Roy Coombes

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A novel objective quality assurance system for smear slide screening is investigated in this thesis. A method of data validation was developed that compares data from an eye tracked image display, machine image colour texture analysis and expert judgements in a statistical manner to identify salient areas of cervical cytological images. These data are used to construct screener performance profiles, which have been compared to screener experience. The experimental methodology is described and how the screener performance profile is constructed. Results from a study of 10 screeners, checkers and pathologists are presented showing predicted trends of human performance. Relations to …

Visualization Techniques For The Analysis Of Neurophysiological Data, Martin Alan Walter Jan 2004

Visualization Techniques For The Analysis Of Neurophysiological Data, Martin Alan Walter

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In order to understand the diverse and complex functions of the Human brain, the temporal relationships of vast quantities of multi-dimensional spike train data must be analysed. A number of statistical methods already exist to analyse these relationships. However, as a result of expansions in recording capability hundreds of spike trains must now be analysed simultaneously. In addition to the requirements for new statistical analysis methods, the need for more efficient data representation is paramount. The computer science field of Information Visualization is specifically aimed at producing effective representations of large and complex datasets. This thesis is based on the …

Speech Quality Prediction For Voice Over Internet Protocol Networks, Lingfen Sun Jan 2004

Speech Quality Prediction For Voice Over Internet Protocol Networks, Lingfen Sun

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

IP networks are on a steep slope of innovation that will make them the long-term carrier of all types of traffic, including voice. However, such networks are not designed to support real-time voice communication because their variable characteristics (e.g. due to delay, delay variation and packet loss) lead to a deterioration in voice quality. A major challenge in such networks is how to measure or predict voice quality accurately and efficiently for QoS monitoring and/or control purposes to ensure that technical and commercial requirements are met. Voice quality can be measured using either subjective or objective methods. Subjective measurement (e.g. …

Coordinated Uav Target Assignment Using Distributed Tour Calculation, David H. Walker, Timothy W. Mclain, Jason K. Kowlett Jan 2004

Coordinated Uav Target Assignment Using Distributed Tour Calculation, David H. Walker, Timothy W. Mclain, Jason K. Kowlett

Faculty Publications

In this chapter a method for assigning unmanned aerial vehicle agents to targets through the use of preplanned vehicle tours is presented. Assignments are based on multi-target tours that consider the spread of the targets and the sensor capabilities of the vehicles. In this way, the individual agents and the team as a whole make better use of team resources and improve team cooperation. Planning and assignments are accomplished in reasonable computational time through the use of heuristics to reduce the problem size.

A Model For Predicting The Performance Of Ip Videoconferencing, Licha Mued Jan 2004

A Model For Predicting The Performance Of Ip Videoconferencing, Licha Mued

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

With the incorporation of free desktop videoconferencing (DVC) software on the majority of the world's PCs, over the recent years, there has, inevitably, been considerable interest in using DVC over the Internet. The growing popularity of DVC increases the need for multimedia quality assessment. However, the task of predicting the perceived multimedia quality over the Internet Protocol (IP) networks is complicated by the fact that the audio and video streams are susceptible to unique impairments due to the unpredictable nature of IP networks, different types of task scenarios, different levels of complexity, and other related factors. To date, a standard …

Futures Thinking To Achieve Sustainable Development At Local Level In Ireland, Lorcan Sirr, Ruth Kelly, John Ratcliffe Jan 2004

Futures Thinking To Achieve Sustainable Development At Local Level In Ireland, Lorcan Sirr, Ruth Kelly, John Ratcliffe

Reports

We are living in times of unprecedented global change and upheaval and over the next ten to 20 years governments, organisations and individuals will face increasing difficulties in an environment of growing complexity, heightened uncertainty and a quickening pace of change. The concept of sustainable development implies the reconciliation of long-term socio-economic development, environmental protection and quality of life; essentially it is concerned with the future. Unfortunately, the potential for linking “futures thinking” to debates about sustainable development at local and regional government levels is relatively undeveloped, particularly in Ireland. Responding to this challenge, The Futures Academy at Technological University …

“So That The Nations May Become Genuine Indian”: Nativism And Leslie Marmon Silko’S Ceremony, Dennis Cutchins Jan 2004

“So That The Nations May Become Genuine Indian”: Nativism And Leslie Marmon Silko’S Ceremony, Dennis Cutchins

Faculty Publications

Leslie Marmon Silko’s (mixed-blood Laguna Pueblo) Ceremony is a powerful novel that tells the story of Tayo, a mixed-blood Pueblo war veteran who returns to Laguna mentally crippled by his wartime experiences. As Tayo struggles to overcome the alienation his military service has created, he must also face the shame of his own mixed heritage. His suffering eventually leads him off the pueblo to a Navajo healer, Betonie, who helps Tayo create a new historical paradigm based on Navajo and Laguna mythology. Betonie’s fictional re-vision of history is, perhaps, the novel’s most important accomplishment. Through Betonie, Silko creates an alternative …
