Generalized Analytical Model For Rf Planar Inductors Using A Segmentation Technique, Marie Yvanoff Jan 2004

Generalized Analytical Model For Rf Planar Inductors Using A Segmentation Technique, Marie Yvanoff

Theses

The planar coil inductor has become a very critical circuit component in RF mixed signal application where it can reside either on the package or in the chip. However, there is no clear methodology to accurately analyze the behavior of the inductor over a broad range of frequencies and for obtaining a particular physical layout for a required value of inductance. At present, it has been done by full wave solvers, approximate quasistatic analysis, and lumped element equivalent circuits, each with its own advantages and limitations. This work presents an analytical model based on a segmentation method in conjunction with …

Film Vs. Digital - A Simulation Of Diagnostic Imaging Systems In Healthcare, Tamar S. Sinclair Jan 2004

Film Vs. Digital - A Simulation Of Diagnostic Imaging Systems In Healthcare, Tamar S. Sinclair

Theses

Today, healthcare providers are faced with the decision of how to perform diagnostic imaging services with respect to continuing with traditional film-based imaging techniques or converting to digital imaging technology. This research focuses on the multifactor operational aspects of the diagnostic imaging system, and evaluates the effect that film or digital based imaging have on operational performance, productivity, and quality of patient care. That is, the time the patient spends in the system, the number of diagnostic imaging procedures performed per week and machine utilization. The goal of this research is to provide a quantitative analysis of film-based versus digital …

Automatic Error Recovery Using P3 Response Verification For A Brain-Computer Interface, Samuel A. Inverso Jan 2004

Automatic Error Recovery Using P3 Response Verification For A Brain-Computer Interface, Samuel A. Inverso

Theses

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is an augmentative communication mechanism that does not rely on peripheral nerves or muscles. Current BCIs are error prone and slow with error rates of 10 to 30% and transmission rates of 10-25 bits/min, however, error recovery and correction in BCI has largely been neglected. The focus of this thesis is the development of a method to automatically recover errors in BCI using the P3 brain signal for response verification. The existence of the P3 signal in responses to controlled goal items is shown in an evoked potential BCI used to control items in a virtual …

Proof Of Concept Design And Analysis Of Active Flow Control Of A Supersonic Micro-Nozzle, Christopher J. Szachta Jan 2004

Proof Of Concept Design And Analysis Of Active Flow Control Of A Supersonic Micro-Nozzle, Christopher J. Szachta

Theses

Low Reynolds number supersonic nozzles have been studied for several years due to their significance in applications in micro-spacecraft. As satellite design reduces in mass and size, smaller more versatile propulsion systems will be required. In response to the need, a conical nozzle (expansion ratio of 25 and 20° half-angle of divergence) with throat dimensions of 600µm x 300µm has been designed and fabricated with capabilities in thrust magnitude control. The device utilizes the expansion of a silicone membrane, located on the upper surface of the supersonic micro-nozzle throat, as a mechanism to reduce the throat cross sectional area, and …

Lorem Ipsum, A Story About Words And Pictures: What They Can Do, And What They Can't, David Huth Jan 2004

Lorem Ipsum, A Story About Words And Pictures: What They Can Do, And What They Can't, David Huth

Theses

Everything we understand about the world comes to us through, and can be captured by, the linguistic use of words and pictures. Or does it? This is a question that addresses the core function and purpose of visual communications design. The question is explored in this film thematically, narratively, and technically, by portraying a story about a person struggling to understand language and solve a unique, high stakes design problem: the library cataloging of an entire human life. This is a creative project that uses computer graphics design technology and the unique presentation of typographical design problems to provoke thought …

China’S Pragmatist Experiment: Hu Shih’S Pragmatism And Dewey’S Influence In China, Sor-Hoon Tan Jan 2004

China’S Pragmatist Experiment: Hu Shih’S Pragmatism And Dewey’S Influence In China, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the 1920s, John Dewey’s followers in China, led by his student HuShih, attempted to put his pragmatism into practice in their quest for democracy. This essay compares Hu Shih’s thought, especially his emphasis on pragmatism asmethod, with Dewey’s philosophical positions and evaluates Hu’s achievement asa pragmatist in the context of the tumultuous times he lived in. It assesses Hu’sclaim that the means to democracy lies in education rather than politics, sincedemocracy as a way of life requires a cultural renewal beyond institutionalchanges. It argues that a problem-centered approach to social change does notpreclude radical action, even revolution. But pragmatism is …

Introduction: Charlotte Perkins Gilman’S Sociological Perspective On Ethics And Society, Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 2004

Introduction: Charlotte Perkins Gilman’S Sociological Perspective On Ethics And Society, Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Social Ethics: Sociology and the Future of Society provides a complex yet accessible statement of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's mature sociological theory of ethical life. Her perspective is welded intellectually to sociology and evolutionary thought and concretely to the well-being of children throughout the world. We have failed, writes Gilman in Social Ethics, to teach even "a simple, child-convincing ethics based on social interactions, because we have not understood sociology" (emphasis added). For Gilman, a world in which children are not loved, well fed, properly clothed, thoughtfully educated, and humanely disciplined is a world ethically at odds with logic and itself. …

Moore's Paradox And Self-Knowledge, John N. Williams Jan 2004

Moore's Paradox And Self-Knowledge, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

What explanation is there of the source of my justification for my beliefs about my beliefs that respects the fact that I am normally the best authority on them? Moore's paradox demands an explanation of the absurdity of believing or asserting possible truths of the forms p but I don't believe that p or p but I believe that not-p. I argue for Evans principle that whatever justifies me in believing that p also justifies me in believing that I believe that p. This helps explain how I come to know my own beliefs and also shows that it is …

Does The Parliament Make A Difference? The Role Of The Italian Parliament In Financial Policy, Carolyn Forestiere, Riccardo Pelizzo Jan 2004

Does The Parliament Make A Difference? The Role Of The Italian Parliament In Financial Policy, Carolyn Forestiere, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A recent survey conducted in a sample of 83 countries by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in collaboration with the World Bank Institute on the Relations between the Legislature and the Executive in the Context of Parliamentary Oversight allows cross-national comparison for the role of legislatures in the budgetary process. One of the survey’s most significant indications is that legislatures in presidential systems are generally more involved in the preparation of the budget than legislatures in either parliamentary or semi-presidential systems. The picture, however, is very different when we look at legislatures’ oversight of the budget. Parliaments are generally more involved in …

Tools For Legislative Oversight: An Empirical Investigation, Riccardo Pelizzo, Rick Stapenhurst Jan 2004

Tools For Legislative Oversight: An Empirical Investigation, Riccardo Pelizzo, Rick Stapenhurst

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Parliaments are the institutions through which governments are held accountable to the electorate. They have a wide range of tools with which to carry out this oversight function, but until recently little analysis had been undertaken on the characteristics or use of such tools. This paper uses data for 83 countries that was collected in 2001 to investigate whether the oversight potential relates to three variables, namely the form of government (presidential, semi-presidential, or parliamentary), per capita income levels, and the level of democracy. The paper finds that oversight potential is greatly affected by the form of government, per capita …

Social Interest And Psychopathy As Predictors Of Offender Outcomes, Kathryn A. Springer Jan 2004

Social Interest And Psychopathy As Predictors Of Offender Outcomes, Kathryn A. Springer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research (Daugherty, Murphy, & Puagh, 2001) has suggested that the Sulliman Scale of Social Interest (SSSI) is an effective predictor of recidivism in criminal offenders. The purpose of the present study was to extend the previous investigation and to examine the relationship between the concepts of social interest and psychopathy and how each are related to the prediction of criminal behavior. The SSSI is based on Adler's conceptualization of social interest as concern for others and optimism with regard to one's view of the world. The Psychopathic Personality Inventory Short Form (PPI-SF) is based on Cleckley's notion of psychopathy …

Comparative Study Of Logistics Services In The Container Liner Shipping Market In The U.K. And South Korea, Ki Soon Hwang Jan 2004

Comparative Study Of Logistics Services In The Container Liner Shipping Market In The U.K. And South Korea, Ki Soon Hwang

Plymouth Business School Theses

In line with the dramatic changes of business environment, certain liner shipping companies have claimed that what they are providing is a 'logistics service' rather than a 'traditional shipping service'. It was found that there is a shortage of discussion in existing literature related to the liner shipping industry regarding the introduction of logistics service and no empirical study on how the operation of such a logistics service has been perceived by shippers. The prime objective of the research is to provide a practical clarification to understanding an operation of logistics service in the liner shipping market. The Delphi technique …

Recent advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) make it possible to accurately predict many features of airflow within ventilated spaces. The present study investigates thermal comfort aspects of an occupant in a conditioned space, using a CFD code.

The heat and mass transfer between the human body and the surrounding environment is analyzed by a coupled model that accounts for dispersal of metabolically generated heat in the body to the surroundings by the combined mechanisms of radiation, convection, respiration and evaporation. A two-node model in which two coupled non-linear algebraic equations govern the skin temperature and the body core temperature …

Compellence: An Empirical Perspective, Michael G. Dziubinski Jan 2004

Compellence: An Empirical Perspective, Michael G. Dziubinski

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Compellence, the use of a contingent threat of force to get a target state to modify a behavior, is an understudied area of international relations. An empirical examination of this area reveals patterns of the frequency of attempted compellence and successful compellence that are not explained by current research or broader international relations theories. In the post-World War II period (1946–2001), the pattern is a rapid drop and continued suppression of success, but a continuation of compellence attempts at the historic level. Existing compellence research and international relations theory do not explain this puzzling disparity of low success and continued …

‘Alert, Alive And Sensitive’: Baker, The Duty To Give Reasons, And The Ethos Of Justification In Canadian Public Law, Mary Liston Jan 2004

‘Alert, Alive And Sensitive’: Baker, The Duty To Give Reasons, And The Ethos Of Justification In Canadian Public Law, Mary Liston

All Faculty Publications

This chapter argues that the remarkable phrase ‘alert, alive and sensitive’ – coined by Madame Justice L’Heureux-Dubé in the major Supreme Court of Canada decision, Baker v. Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration) – signifies two important jurisprudential developments. First, the phrase ‘alert, alive and sensitive’ indicates a set of attributes connoting good judgment which can be used to evaluate the quality of judicial and administrative decisions. Second, the phrase comports with an emergent understanding of Canadian public law as an ‘ethos of justification’ in which citizens and non-citizens are democratically, and often constitutionally, entitled to participate in decisions made …

Queering Legal Education: A Project Of Theoretical Discovery, Kim Brooks, Debra Parkes Jan 2004

Queering Legal Education: A Project Of Theoretical Discovery, Kim Brooks, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

The article has two parts. Part II discusses the materials we reviewed to inform the development of a queer legal pedagogy. In particular, it examines the categories of queer legal scholarship and highlights the contributions of other outsider scholars to legal education debates. Early in our research, we found limited material on queer legal pedagogy, and we discovered nothing that posited a theoretical approach. We did, however, find rich resources written by other outsiders to law from which some design principles for queer legal pedagogy might be drawn. We should note at the outset that our goal in this Part …

Targeting Workplace Harassment In Quebec: On Exporting A New Legislative Agenda, Debra Parkes Jan 2004

Targeting Workplace Harassment In Quebec: On Exporting A New Legislative Agenda, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

For over twenty-five years, Canadian law has prohibited sexual harassment and other forms of discriminatory harassment (meaning harassment that relates to the target's race, disability, sexual orientation, or other similar characteristic). Recent amendments to the Quebec Labour Standards Act aim to fill a gap in the law that currently provides a remedy (under human rights legislation) for discriminatory harassment, but not for harassment that is not obviously linked to the target's membership in a protected class such as that based on race, sex, religion, disability or sexual orientation. This paper takes a preliminary look at this new legislative initiative. It …

Render Copyright Unto Caesar: On Taking Incentives Seriously, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2004

Render Copyright Unto Caesar: On Taking Incentives Seriously, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay suggests we bifurcate our thinking. Conventional copyright rules by money, so let it rule the money-bound. Let a different set of rules evolve for more complex uses, particularly when the users have a personal relationship with the utilized text. Much recent scholarship contains dramatic suggestions to secure a freedom to be creative, rewrite, and be imaginative. My work has long sought to defend such freedoms, but I believe we understand imagination and its conditions too little to employ it as a starting point. I suggest instead that we acquire a better conceptual map of the generative process and …

Parks As Gyms? Recreational Paradigms And Public Health In The National Parks, Jay D. Wexler Jan 2004

Parks As Gyms? Recreational Paradigms And Public Health In The National Parks, Jay D. Wexler

Faculty Scholarship

When scholars and policymakers think about the relationship between public health and environmental law and policy, they likely think first about controlling pollution and other toxic substances. As other articles have amply demonstrated, water pollution, air pollution, and other environmental toxins can have significant deleterious effects on the public's health. Scholars rightly pay serious attention to these relationships, and policymakers wisely devise methods and strategies to ameliorate the public health risks posed by these polluting substances.

Although pollution control might be the most obvious and important intersection between environmental policy and public health, legal and policy decisions regarding the management …

Discerning Attributes Which Stimulate Performance In Quality Improvement Teams, Dwan Lamar Prude

Masters Theses

"Total quality management (TQM) can be summed up as people and the way they work. One key element of the philosophies of TQM is the heavy emphasis on utilizing quality improvement teams (QITs) and quality tools to effectively create high performance organizations. Specifically, this investigation asks the following questions: 1) What are the key attributes that contribute to performance in QITs? 2) What is the relationship between team communication and QIT performance? 3) What is the relationship between the number of quality tools utilized in a team and QIT performance? Participants for this study were 101 students from the University …
