"Doublethink"Ing Privacy Under The Multi-State Antiterrorism Information Exchange, Thomas V. Burch Jan 2004

"Doublethink"Ing Privacy Under The Multi-State Antiterrorism Information Exchange, Thomas V. Burch

Scholarly Works

This Article examines the development of the Matrix program and analyzes its effect on what Justices Warren and Brandeis termed the individual's "right to be let alone." To understand the Matrix's effect on individual privacy, one must scrutinize the program in the context of United States history. From the Alien and Sedition Acts to the Red Squads of the 1960s and 1970.

Part II of this Article examines how civil liberties often suffer unnecessarily in times of national crisis. Part III then discusses how this truism applies in the current "war on terror" and details the development and operation of the …

Biology

Retroviruses utilize cellular dNTPs to perform proviral DNA synthesis in infected host cells. Unlike oncoretroviruses, which replicate in dividing cells, lentiviruses, such as human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and simian immunodeficiency virus, are capable of efficiently replicating in non-dividing cells (terminally differentiated macrophages) as well as dividing cells (i.e. activated CD4+ T cells). In general, non-dividing cells are likely to have low cellular dNTP content compared with dividing cells. Here, by employing a novel assay for cellular dNTP content, we determined the dNTP concentrations in two HIV-1 target cells, macrophages and activated CD4+ T cells. We found that human …

An Optical Source For Characterizing Cmos Imagers, Jed J. Hancock, Doran J. Baker, Gene A. Ware Jan 2004

An Optical Source For Characterizing Cmos Imagers, Jed J. Hancock, Doran J. Baker, Gene A. Ware

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

To characterize CMOS imagers an LED-based multi-spectral optical source system was designed and tested which is capable of illuminating a 15-mm field at a conjugate distance of 50 mm with 98 percent uniformity. The calibration source is comprised of an array of RGB semiconductor LEDs, an IR cutoff filter and a diffusing lens. The system is integrated into an anodized aluminum housing. The spatial uniformity of the LED optical source was compared with an optical integrating sphere and an Optoliner projection system.

Estimating The Impact Of State Policy Incentives On Wind Power Development, Kellie K. Phelan Jan 2004

Estimating The Impact Of State Policy Incentives On Wind Power Development, Kellie K. Phelan

Honors Theses

Wind power has recently become a viable alternative to conventional fossil fuels for electricity generation because of decreasing costs and the presence of various supportive policy incentives. Pressing environmental issues and concerns about energy security have also prompted interest in wind power as an alternative fuel source. Though less than one percent of the United States electricity supply currently comes from wind power, state policy incentives have the potential to promote the development of the significant wind resources found throughout the United States (American Wind Energy Association 2003). Using a large data set that combines information on installed wind capacity …

Visual Expectations: Using Machine Learning To Identify Patterns In Psychological Data, Skyler Place

Honors Theses

The goal of this project was to utilize the tools of machine learning to evaluate the data obtained through experiments in psychology. Advanced pattern finding algorithms are an effective approach to analyzing large sets of data, from any domain of science. Consequently, we have a psychological question and hypothesis, and a separate machine learning technique to assess these claims. The realm of psychology that I focused on is visual cognition, and how an individual's knowledge affects how they see the world. This alteration of visual data is a part of perception -when the brain enhances the data coming in from …
