Prototypes: The Modern Retail Industry In Suburban Communities, Benjamin Paul Hartley Jan 2004

Prototypes: The Modern Retail Industry In Suburban Communities, Benjamin Paul Hartley

Open Access Master's Theses

The implementation of the "prototype", large or small, has become the de facto strategy for national and regional corporations to compete in today's retail market. The prototype, in terms of retail development, refers to the creation of a single building and site design that is to be applied, with the smallest amount of variation possible, each time a new store is constructed. Almost universally, the building is square and utilitarian, the entrance faces the street, large parking areas are located between the entrance and street and perhaps to the side, and a loading area is placed in the back. The …

Extent And Composition Of Open Coastal Sandplain Plant Communities Of The Cape Cod National Seashore, Evan L. Gwilliam Jan 2004

Extent And Composition Of Open Coastal Sandplain Plant Communities Of The Cape Cod National Seashore, Evan L. Gwilliam

Open Access Master's Theses

Coastal sandplain heathlands and grasslands of the northeastern United States are globally rare habitat types that support a unique assemblage of plants and animals. This habitat is rapidly disappearing due to plant succession following cessation of land use, and coastal processes. I used interpretation of historical maps, aerial photography, GIS, and analysis of field data to examine vegetation dynamics and the impact of historic land use and coastal processes on the current extent and composition of coastal sandplain plant communities found within the Cape Cod National Seashore (CCNS). Currently, one third (244 ha) of the coastal heathland and grassland habitat …

Assessment Of Thermal Infrared Detection Rates Using White-Tailed Deer Surrogates, Robert E. Kissell Jr., Philip A. Tappe Jan 2004

Assessment Of Thermal Infrared Detection Rates Using White-Tailed Deer Surrogates, Robert E. Kissell Jr., Philip A. Tappe

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

As thermal infrared imaging technology has improved, it has increasingly been used for estimating sizes of wildlife populations. The greatest bias of thermal infrared surveys is the lack of known detection rates to adjust for visibility bias. As with visual surveys, a measure of detection rate is needed to provide unbiased estimates. We assessed the detection rate of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) using a thermal infrared sensor (1.2 - 5.9 /an) from an aerial platform. Similar characteristics between thermal signatures of people and deer allowed us to use people in a reclined or horizontal position as surrogates for deer. We …

Modeling Slope In A Geographic Information System, Robert C. Weih Jr., Tabitha L. Mattson Jan 2004

Modeling Slope In A Geographic Information System, Robert C. Weih Jr., Tabitha L. Mattson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer a cost-effective way to analyze and inventory land and environmental resources. There are many attributes that can be displayed and analyzed in GIS. One of these attributes is slope, which can be calculated from a digital elevation model (DEM). Slope is an important factor in a variety of models used in land analysis as well as land use and management. There are several different mathematical computational algorithms used to calculate slope within a GIS. Eight different slope calculation methods were investigated in this study. These methods were used to calculate slope using 10-m, 30-m, and …

Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello Jan 2004

Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello

McNair Scholars Journal

Western-European stereotypes still permeate Plains Indian culture suggesting that women were passive and subjugated while men were dominant warriors. This research challenges those stereotypes through exploration of origin and spirituality accounts, kinship organization, historical impact, contemporary and traditional issues, and through first hand ethnographic research of the Sicangu Nation of Lakota people in regards to gender roles. Using feminist critique and reflexive theoretical approaches, information was collected through participant observation and interviews with Sicangu people in 2004. By focusing on how Lakota women have empowered themselves, this research illustrates how women were and continue to be respected, influential members of …

Investigating The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Delinquent Behavior, Danielle J. Terry Jan 2004

Investigating The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Delinquent Behavior, Danielle J. Terry

McNair Scholars Journal

Although numerous studies have examined the connection between delinquent behavior and parenting styles in children and adolescents, limited research has been done to determine if there is an ongoing relationship between these variables in the college population. This study included 38 college students and examined the relationship between parenting styles; families studied were authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent, and uninvolved. It was predicted that authoritarian parenting practices would be highly correlated with delinquent behavior, particularly for students with a difficult temperament and low family cohesion.

Psychopaths In The Courtroom: A Preliminary Report On Judicial Sentencing For Violent Offenses, John Traxler Jan 2004

Psychopaths In The Courtroom: A Preliminary Report On Judicial Sentencing For Violent Offenses, John Traxler

McNair Scholars Journal

Every day, judges are faced with making decisions about a defendant’s potential risk as it relates to setting bail, sentencing, and a variety of other contexts. In making these decisions, judges must balance issues of fairness and protection of the individual rights of the accused with protection of society from dangerous predators who may commit future acts of physical or sexual violence. As professionals who are not specifically trained in violence assessment, judges must rely on others, including probation agents, attorneys, and expert witnesses, for information to assist in their decision-making. Through expert witnesses and up-to-date training of criminal justice …

Psr J1829+2456: A Relativistic Binary Pulsar, D. J. Champion, D. R. Lorimer, M. A. Mclaughlin, James M. Cordes, Zaven Arzoumanian, Joel M. Weisberg, Joseph H. Taylor

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

We report the discovery of a new binary pulsar, PSR J1829+2456, found during a mid-latitude drift-scan survey with the Arecibo telescope. Our initial timing observations show the 41-ms pulsar to be in a 28-hr, slightly eccentric, binary orbit. The advance of periastron ˙ω = 0 .28 ± 0 .01 deg yr − 1 is derived from our timing observations spanning 200 days. Assuming that the advance of periastron is purely relativistic and a reasonable range of neutron star masses for PSR J1829+2456 we constrain the companion mass to be between 1.22 M ⊙ and 1.38 M ⊙, making it likely …

Loss Of Sympathetic Control Of Cardiovascular Function Following Spinal Cord Injury, Charles Everett Hogancamp Ii Jan 2004

Loss Of Sympathetic Control Of Cardiovascular Function Following Spinal Cord Injury, Charles Everett Hogancamp Ii

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Cardiovascular control in the human is significantly impaired after spinal cord injury(SCI) having a direct effect on the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) causing an inability toregulate vasoconstriction below the level of the lesion. The effects of SCI on the two majorcomponents of blood pressure regulation, control of plasma volume and neural control of theheart and peripheral vasculature are poorly understood. In particular, no index to diagnosedisorders to autonomic control of the heart and vasculature has been developed. The presentstudy primarily utilized noninvasively acquired, easily accessible variables that may havepromise as indicators of autonomic activity for assessing the level of autonomic …

Contracting With Nonprofit Organizations: A Model For Local Governments, Renee Jackson Jan 2004

Contracting With Nonprofit Organizations: A Model For Local Governments, Renee Jackson

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

A number of factors have contributed to the rise in nonprofit organizations during the last three decades. No matter the reasons one significant consequence has been an intensification of competition for available funding. With the increasing competition for funding there is growing concern that there may not be an equitable and efficient method in place for many funders to base their allocation decisions on. These concerns arise from the issues that occur during funding processes such as: how open and competitive is the request for proposal process; is there duplication of the same service; can the organization adequately provide the …

The Charity Oversight Authority Of The Texas Attorney General., John W. Vinson Jan 2004

The Charity Oversight Authority Of The Texas Attorney General., John W. Vinson

St. Mary's Law Journal

The Attorney General of Texas is the only elected official charged with regulating the state’s charitable interest. This duty and authority over charitable assets and entities are comprehensive and unique in themselves. Although the broader state representation role of American attorneys general has evolved considerably and been substantively codified in the statutory law, the area of charity regulations has remained remarkably true to its common law root. This Article will briefly examine the early roots of charity regulation and then discuss the authority and duties of the Attorney General of Texas in the modern context of charity regulation. In Texas, …

Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle Jan 2004

Estimating The Impact Of Occupational Fatal Injuries On The United States Gross Domestic Product., Elyce Anne Biddle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mankind has been concerned with the safety and well-being of workers for more than 2,000 years. Despite this concern, occupational injuries have claimed the lives of nearly 60,000 American workers from 1992-2001 as reported through the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) program. The traditional measures of the human loss used—frequency, rate, and severity—are not the only measures of the achievements of the occupational safety and health community. Nor are they the only means to direct efforts to reduce the number of occupational incidents. Economic loss is another perspective that provides a more complete and meaningful …

Holocene Palaeoclimate Reconstruction From New Zealand Peatlands, Zoe Jennifer Hazell Jan 2004

Holocene Palaeoclimate Reconstruction From New Zealand Peatlands, Zoe Jennifer Hazell

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A selection of palaeoecological proxies were tested on two raised, ombrotrophic, restiad peat bog sites from the North Island of New Zealand. With varying degrees of success, peat humification, testate amoebae, plant macrofossil and charcoal analyses contributed to determining the palaeomoisture records from three cores on each site. Climatic inferences have successfully been made for the Waikato region, mid North Island, over the period between the Tuhua (6,130±30 14C years BP; 6,800-7,150 cal. years BP) and Taupo (1,850±10 14C years BP; 1,650-1,800 cal. years BP) tephras. 47 AMS radiocarbon ages contributed to the production of age-depth models. The peat humification …

Analysis Of Water Masses Distribution And Circulation In The White Sea, Russia, Laurent Latché Jan 2004

Analysis Of Water Masses Distribution And Circulation In The White Sea, Russia, Laurent Latché

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The White Sea is a semi-enclosed sea, which consists of several bays and estuaries connected to the open ocean through the narrow and shallow Gorlo Strait. Several studies have been carried out in the region during the last decade in order to investigate the potential threat of anthropogenic pollutants. However, the temporal and spatial resolution of such experiments has been inadequate to resolve issues such as the dispersion and propagation of environmentally hazardous substances. The present investigation uses in-situ measurements of temperature and salinity gathered at high spatio-temporal resolution for the first time, as part of the INTAS project "Mesoscale …

Corrosion Of Galvanized Fasteners Used In Cold-Formed Steel Framing, American Iron And Steel Institute Jan 2004

Corrosion Of Galvanized Fasteners Used In Cold-Formed Steel Framing, American Iron And Steel Institute

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

This research program investigated the potential for corrosion of galvanized fasteners used in cold-formed steel framing by exposing test samples to a variety of environmental conditions frequently found in Hawaii and elsewhere. The results of this research will aid in the evaluation of galvanized fasteners in various exposure conditions. Five field enclosures were constructed on the island of Oahu at coastal locations on both windward and leeward shores, and in the interior of the island. Each field enclosure represented various aspects of typical cold-formed steel construction and was equipped with a complete weather station. This report details the design, construction …

Thomas Jefferson: The Revolution Of Ideas, Richard B. Bernstein Jan 2004

Thomas Jefferson: The Revolution Of Ideas, Richard B. Bernstein

Books

In this new concise biography Thomas Jefferson historian R.B. Bernstein finds the key to this enigmatic Founder not as a great political figure, but as leader of a "revolution of ideas that would make the world over again".

Bernstein examines Jefferson's strengths and weaknesses, his achievements and failures, his triumphs, contradictions, and failings. Thomas Jefferson details his luxurious (and debt-burdened) life as a Virginia gentleman to his passionate belief in democracy, from his tortured defense of slavery to his relationship with Sally Hemings. An architect, inventor, writer, diplomat, propagandist, planter, party leader Jefferson was multifaceted, and Bernstein explores these roles …
