The Relationships Of Teachers' Levels Of Technology Integration On Student Achievement In Reading And Mathematics, Valerie S. Fields

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the level of technology integration of fourth and eighth grade teachers in eleven rural school districts in northeastern Louisiana related to student achievement in reading and mathematics.

The sample consisted of 123 fourth and eighth grade teachers and their students from the eleven rural school districts in northeastern Louisiana. Fifty-eight percent of the teachers represented the fourth grade and 42% of the teachers represented the eighth grade. An Analysis Of Entry-Level Librarian Ads Published In American Libraries, 1982-2002., Claudene Sproles, David Ratledge

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Much discussion has taken place in the literature over the difficulty finding qualified candidates to fill vacancies within libraries. Emphasis has been placed on recruitment, internships, scholarships, and other partnerships by library science schools and libraries to attract new people to the profession. Even so, applicant pools are dwindling [Simmons-Welburn and McNeil, 2004] and many institutions have been forced to rewrite job ads after initial postings to locate a qualified candidate. Factors hindering vacancy searches include:

  • Graying of the profession, “Thousands of librarians will be retiring in the next ten years” [Simmons-Welburn and McNeil, 2004]
  • Budget constraints/less positions [Bureau of …

Drifting Down The Dnieper With Prince Potemkin: Some Skeptical Reflections About The Place Of Compliance Programs In Federal Criminal Sentencing (Symposium), Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

This Article explains how the federal organizational sentencing guidelines work and how they have created incentives for businesses to set up compliance programs. It then considers the paucity of evidence that compliance programs actually prevent the occurrence of corporate crime. It also questions whether investments in compliance programs make sense even for companies caught in a federal criminal investigation. There is little evidence that compliance programs have any significant effect on the likelihood that federal prosecutors will file criminal charges in the first instance. Even more surprisingly, examination of U.S. Sentencing Commission statistics reveals that the compliance program movement seems …

Fear And Risk In 'Times Of Crisis': The Media's Challenge, Richard C. Reuben Oct 2004

Fear And Risk In 'Times Of Crisis': The Media's Challenge, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

As we have heard time and again during this conference, perspective is a crucial safeguard against the distorting effect of fear. While space and consumer patience may be thin, it is during times of crisis that the media's capacity to provide context becomes most important. This is part of the challenge of risk communication. Editors need to insist on this perspective rather than trying to cut it out if the story still reads, and reporters need to learn how to write about it effectively as well as compellingly. None of these challenges is easy. Institutional reform never is. But I …

Multi-Culturalism In Ireland: Examining The Context Of And Debates Surrounding The Citizenship Referendum, Melanie Todman Oct 2004

Multi-Culturalism In Ireland: Examining The Context Of And Debates Surrounding The Citizenship Referendum, Melanie Todman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In this paper, I hope to explore Irish reactions to multi-culturalism through the highly controversial citizenship referendum. This referendum, through which the twenty-seventh amendment to the Irish Constitution will be made, is fundamentally changing Ireland’s citizenship policy from one of jus soli and jus sanguinis to one of just jus sanguinis. This change has been made amid current inflows of immigrants, many of whom are racially distinct and come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The framing question for this paper is: Like other European countries, Ireland is making the transition from a racially homogenous society to a more heterogenous …

Terminating Calder: "Effects" Based Jurisdiction In The Ninth Circuit After Schwarzenegger V. Fred Martin Motor Co., A. Benjamin Spencer

Faculty Publications

In Calder v. Jones, the Supreme Court clearly and succinctly determined that personal jurisdiction is appropriate over a defendant whose only contact with the forum state is its intentional actions aimed at and having harmful "effects" in the forum state. Illustrating the extent to which the law of personal jurisdiction had been relaxed from the time of Pennoyer v. Neff and International Shoe Co. v. Washington, Calder also extended the reach of state courts by permitting jurisdiction over out-of-state defendants on the strength of the plaintiffs' connections with the forum state. Although Calder provided a welcome and much …

Semi-Autonomous Human-Uav Interfaces For Fixed-Wing Mini-Uavs, Randal Beard, Michael A. Goodrich, Morgan Quigley

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: DARPA, AFOSR. We present several human-robot interfaces that support real-time control of a small semi-autonomous UAV. These interfaces are designed for searching tasks and other missions that typically do not have a precise predetermined flight plan. We present a detailed analysis of a PDA interface and describe how our other interfaces relate to this analysis. We then offer quantative and qualitative performance comparisons of the interfaces, as well as an analysis of their possible real-world applications.

Sacs Standards 2004: A Compliance Strategy For Academic Libraries, William N. Nelson Oct 2004

Sacs Standards 2004: A Compliance Strategy For Academic Libraries, William N. Nelson

The Southeastern Librarian

This article first provides an introduction to and summary of Principles of Accreditation accompanied by a detailed list of provisions specifically applicable to libraries in higher education. The provisions and importance of Standards for College Libraries, approved by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in 2000, are summarized and examples of implementation are identified. In a 2003 revision, minimal changes were made to these ACRL standards, which received final approval as the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education in June 2004. These standards now supercede the three ACRL type-of-library standards produced separately for universities, colleges, and community …

Libraries And Donors: Maintaining The Status Quo, Steven Cox Oct 2004

Libraries And Donors: Maintaining The Status Quo, Steven Cox

The Southeastern Librarian

Many librarians who manage special collections are grateful for the donations of items or collections that fall within their mission and collection scope. In turn, most donors find satisfaction in knowing that their gifts are housed in repositories, where they will be preserved and maintained by qualified staff and available to patrons for future years. Oftentimes donors, after receiving formal acknowledgement and sincere thanks for their donations, disappear back into the public landscape, perhaps glad to have found a new home for all those books or items. Their donations are unconditional—no strings attached and no demands for special recognition. The …
