Synchronous Text-Based Chat Vis-À-Vis Asynchronous Threaded Discussion: An Instructional Strategy For Providing An Option In Two Course Delivery Schemes, Shin Yi Lin

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether an instructional strategy of providing students an option of two types of online text-based discussion (chat vs. threaded discussion forum) had significant effects on student satisfaction, cognitive achievement, and self-efficacy. In an effort to identify any differential effects associated with student characteristics, students' age and learning preferences were used as blocking variables. The study sample was teacher education students. Statistical procedures employed were MANOVA; MANCOVA, regression analysis, chi-square, and correlation were employed. The findings show that such an instructional customization—providing the online discussion forum option—has positive impacts on student satisfaction and …

The Relationship Between Social Skills And Resiliency Among Preschool Children, Kathleen M. Twohig Jan 2004

The Relationship Between Social Skills And Resiliency Among Preschool Children, Kathleen M. Twohig

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between social skills and resiliency among preschool children. Numerous research studies have suggested that social skills and resiliency are related. However, the precise relationship between these two constructs remains unclear. Specifically, is it possible for a child to possess good social skills but not be resilient? Is it possible for a child to be resilient but not have good social skills? In the present study, preschool teachers from a private day care center rated children in their classes (n = 68) using behavior rating scales purported to measure social skills …

Early Literacy And Making Sense In An Inclusive Preschool Classroom, Patresa A. Hartman Jan 2004

Early Literacy And Making Sense In An Inclusive Preschool Classroom, Patresa A. Hartman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this ethnographic study was to build understanding regarding the meaning and role of early literacy as a meaningful interaction in one inclusive preschool classroom. I was specifically interested in the idea of literacy as a social construction - as an interaction with one's environment for the purpose of making sense of it. Furthermore, I investigated the way this construction facilitated or denied one child's citizenship in the classroom community, which is located within an early childhood center in a mid-sized, Midwestern city. My topic, examining early literacy as a sense-making interaction, lent itself quite naturally to qualitative …

The Impact Of The Dividend Tax Cut And Managerial Stock Holdings On Corporate Dividend Policy, Jouahn Nam, Jun Wang, Ge Zhang Jan 2004

The Impact Of The Dividend Tax Cut And Managerial Stock Holdings On Corporate Dividend Policy, Jouahn Nam, Jun Wang, Ge Zhang

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

We examine the impact of the May 2003 dividend tax cut and managerial stock holdings on corporate dividend initiation decision. We find that managers who hold sizable stakes in their companies are more likely to initiate dividends following this tax cut. This positive relation is stronger for firms with higher growth opportunities. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that managers initiate dividends to maximize their own wealth. Moreover, the market reacts negatively (most positively) to dividend initiation announcements by firms with higher (lower) growth opportunities and higher (lower) managerial share holdings.

What Next?: The German Strategy Crisis During The Summer Of 1940, Leonard Spencer Cooley

LSU Major Papers

The German blitzkrieg across France during May 1940 was the culmination of three years of daring political and military moves that had brought most of Europe under German control. It was the German dictator Adolf Hitler who had outguessed his advisors. Yet, Hitler's bold moves in Western Europe ended with his army's dash across France, and the failure to strike Great Britain that summer when the British were at one of the weakest points in their entire history. After Germany defeated France, Hitler began a fruitless period of waiting for Great Britain to sue for peace. Unlike Hitler, some in …
