Two Powers’ And Early Jewish And Christian Monotheism, James F. Mcgrath, Jerry Truex Jan 2004

Two Powers’ And Early Jewish And Christian Monotheism, James F. Mcgrath, Jerry Truex

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Our understanding of early Judaism and its relationship to Christianity has been significantly advanced by Alan Segal’s formative work on the two powers heresy. This work demonstrated that belief in two heavenly powers was considered an intolerable heresy by the rabbis and that Christians were among those indicted. Furthermore, Segal argued that the two powers debate could be traced back to the first century, as evidenced by certain christological passages of the NT4 and by Philo's writings.

Robert Pinkerton: Principal Agent Of The Bfbs In The Kingdoms Of Germany, Wayne A. Detzler

History Faculty Publications

According to Lord Teignmouth, who served as the first president of the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS), Robert Pinkerton (1780-1859) was the "most diligent of all the Society's agents."

This paper seeks to build upon such interest in Pinkerton's work and observations, dividing his Bible Society career into four phases: The Russian Years; His Hopes for War-Torn Europe; Surviving the Apocrypha Crisis; and Pinkerton's New Path in Frankfurt.

Required Textbooks (1) The Bible The primary text is the Bible. As a part of your work, feel free to draw on what we might call "formal equivalence" translations. Such versions stick closely to the original wording and sentence structure of the Greek and Hebrew text. Examples include the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), the Revised Standard Version (RSV), the New American Standard Bible (NASB), the New Jerusalem Bible (NJB), and the New American Bible (NAB). While the King James Version and New King James Version are formal equivalence translations, they sometimes reflect a less original Greek text. For this …

Measure For Measure: Two Misunderstood Prinicples Of Damages, Exodus 21:22-25 Life For Life, Eye For Eye And Matthew 5:38-39 Turn The Other Cheek, Andrew R. Simmonds

St. Thomas Law Review

The most important measure of damages is measure for measure: the rule of proportional damages, which in its most famous iteration is the rule of "eye for eye." Found most prominently in the biblical Book of the Covenant in Exodus 21:22-25, the rule states that where two men fight and in the course of their fight a pregnant woman and her fetuses are killed the penalty shall be "life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, stripe for stripe." The biblical maxims "eye for eye" and "you have heard it …
