Analysis Of Bacterial Diversity And Biogeography At The Central Arizona-Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research (Cap Lter) Site, Brian Anthony Rash Jan 2004

Analysis Of Bacterial Diversity And Biogeography At The Central Arizona-Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research (Cap Lter) Site, Brian Anthony Rash

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The limiting factor involved in past assessments of soil bacterial diversity when using culture-independent techniques has often been the lack of sampling and replication. As a result, analyses of community structural shifts across soil environments have lacked statistical power. In this study, 23 16S rRNA gene clone libraries consisting of over 11,000 clones were constructed from soils at the Central Arizona Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) site. Subsequent ARDRA fingerprinting and partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing allowed for a more robust investigation of various components that may explain any observed variations in bacterial species composition. The designated land …

Hidden Landscapes Of The Ancient Maya: Transect Excavations At Arvin's Landing Southern Belize, Bretton Michael Somers Jan 2004

Hidden Landscapes Of The Ancient Maya: Transect Excavations At Arvin's Landing Southern Belize, Bretton Michael Somers

LSU Master's Theses

Transect excavations at Arvin’s Landing in southern Belize revealed evidence of ancient Maya settlement indiscernible from surface inspection. The synthesis of archaeology and geography in field and laboratory methods and analysis provided the framework for this thesis. This study involves a transect survey with systematic shovel tests. Artifacts were recovered and recorded in the field and analyzed in the LSU archaeology laboratory in Punta Gorda, Belize. The entire survey area was mapped by transit and measurements and coordinates were combined with artifact data in a GIS. Prior research at Arvin’s Landing had revealed a Postclassic mound on the bank of …

Faunal Succession Of Necrophilous Insects Associated With High-Pofile Wildlife Carcasses In Louisiana, Erin Jean Grindley Watson Jan 2004

Faunal Succession Of Necrophilous Insects Associated With High-Pofile Wildlife Carcasses In Louisiana, Erin Jean Grindley Watson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The same entomological criteria used in estimating time of death for humans are applicable for deceased wildlife. Necrophilous insects associated with animal carcasses can provide wildlife law enforcement with valuable information necessary for postmortem interval estimation, and ultimately, to incriminate poachers. The purpose of this research was twofold: to establish species composition, faunal succession patterns, and species and life stage interactions of necrophilous insects associated with three wildlife species; and to identify new methods of evaluating succession patterns using statistical measures. Twenty-one large vertebrate carcasses were monitored throughout decomposition in a mixed flatwood forest in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA …

Community Health Centers: Health Care As It Could Be, Juniper Lesnik

Journal of Law and Health

This article explores the potential of community health centers (CHCs) to become a central component providing health care in America. It focuses on health centers as a proposed solution to the dual national problems of access to care and the shortage of primary care doctoring. It argues that CHCs have the capacity to address the problem of access to health services and to provide a vibrant model for the revival of primary care. Part I deals with the history, structure, current scope, and funding of CHCs. Part II looks at national health care goals and how CHCs are uniquely poised …

Becoming The Buddha: The Ritual Of Image Consecration In Thailand, Donald K. Swearer Jan 2004

Becoming The Buddha: The Ritual Of Image Consecration In Thailand, Donald K. Swearer

Religion Faculty Works

Becoming the Buddha is the first book-length study of a key ritual of Buddhist practice in Asia: the consecration of a Buddha image or new Buddha," a ceremony by which the Buddha becomes present or alive. Through a richly detailed, accessible exploration of this ritual in northern Thailand, an exploration that stands apart from standard text-based or anthropological approaches, Donald Swearer makes a major contribution to our understanding of the Buddha image, its role in Buddhist devotional life, and its relationship to the veneration of Buddha relics. Blending ethnography, analysis, and Buddhist texts related to this mimetic reenactment of the …

Santa Clara Pueblo V. Martinez: Twenty-Five Years Of Disparate Cultural Visions An Essay Introducing The Case For Re-Argument Before The American Indian Nations Supreme Court, Gloria Valencia-Weber Jan 2004

Santa Clara Pueblo V. Martinez: Twenty-Five Years Of Disparate Cultural Visions An Essay Introducing The Case For Re-Argument Before The American Indian Nations Supreme Court, Gloria Valencia-Weber

Faculty Scholarship

Santa Clara Pueblo v. Martinez nakedly presents a conflict between the individual rights norm of equality and the communal or collective political right of the first sovereigns within U.S. borders. The conflict underlies the discourse in law scholarship and reflects disparate cultural visions between mainstream society and American Indians. In Indian law the decision has saliency with positive and negative force injected into different arenas besides equal protection, gender, and membership qualifications. It is a major fortification for the federally recognized tribal sovereigns to exclude external law and forums, the federal law and courts, in how tribes exercise self-government. The …

Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello Jan 2004

Gender And Empowerment: Contemporary Lakota Women Of Rosebud, Christina G. Mello

McNair Scholars Journal

Western-European stereotypes still permeate Plains Indian culture suggesting that women were passive and subjugated while men were dominant warriors. This research challenges those stereotypes through exploration of origin and spirituality accounts, kinship organization, historical impact, contemporary and traditional issues, and through first hand ethnographic research of the Sicangu Nation of Lakota people in regards to gender roles. Using feminist critique and reflexive theoretical approaches, information was collected through participant observation and interviews with Sicangu people in 2004. By focusing on how Lakota women have empowered themselves, this research illustrates how women were and continue to be respected, influential members of …

Patriarchy And Feminism: A Longitudinal Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Women On Playboy Magazine Covers., Jacqueline R. Graham Jan 2004

Patriarchy And Feminism: A Longitudinal Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Women On Playboy Magazine Covers., Jacqueline R. Graham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study is a longitudinal cultural study of the portrayal of the ideal female image in the mass media. The focus of this study was on female objectification and sexuality representations by the male decision maker in the patriarchal society. An excellent example of this is Playboy magazine, whose objectification of the female body as a means of entertainment for men has existed for 30 years. A dataset was compiled of 180 Playboy magazine covers spanning three decades: 70s, 80s, 90s. Results indicated a curvilinear trend in the sexual suggestiveness portrayed by the models on the covers, peaking in the …

Conventional Beliefs, Involvement In Conventional Activities, And Delinquency: A Test Of Social Control Theory., Amy White

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Juvenile delinquency and illegal substance abuse are growing problems in American society. Many studies based on various theories of adolescents’ delinquent behavior have been conducted to discover the reasons why youth become involved in delinquency or use drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. In this study, the researcher has sought to test some aspects of social control theory by carrying out secondary analysis on data collected from a survey administered to eighth and eleventh graders in a county school district in West Virginia. The results of the study show that eighth and eleventh graders’ involvement in conventional activities and their conventional beliefs …

An Archaeology Of Pain, Dennis Michael Gruber Jan 2004

An Archaeology Of Pain, Dennis Michael Gruber

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Pain is a discursive construct of science and medicine. Through the discourses of biopower and technoscience pain is used to construct and maintain the social body. Biopower and technoscience are discursive practices that are enveloped within the disciplines of Western society. Specifically, the disciplines of education, science, and medicine use biopower and technoscience to normalize the body and construct binaries which create the abnormal. The cyborg is a discursive practice used to implode the binaries of the disciplines which maintain the social body. Through the implosion of binaries, the binary of mind/body is no longer plausible in the explanation of …

Population Genetics Analysis Of The Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Using Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism, Melody A. Flowers Jan 2004

Population Genetics Analysis Of The Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Using Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism, Melody A. Flowers

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Little is known about the genetic structure of grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, populations or the effects the parasite Microphallus turgidus has on it. The objective of this study was to determine the amount of genetic diversity of the shrimp populations based on locality and parasite load. In order to examine the genetics of P. pugio, shrimp DNA was extracted and scanned using single stand conformation polymorphism. Results revealed P. pugio populations are highly conserved among localities. This suggests a significant amount of gene flow is taking place. Results also indicate there is no correlation between the most common host haplotype …

Cultural-Studies Criticism, Peter Lurie Jan 2004

Cultural-Studies Criticism, Peter Lurie

English Faculty Publications

Faulkner’s “career” within cultural studies began, within the history of the cultural-studies movement itself, comparatively late. This is not an especially remarkable point about Faulkner or any one particular writers; as a critical movement, cultural studies was never concerned more with any one figure than another, and was always concerned with an interdisciplinary and interdiscursive focus rather than a writer’s singularity. It is a point worth noting, however, because of the specific ways in which Faulkner’s work seems hospitable to cultural studies’ concerns. From his earliest stages of writing, Faulkner was aware of his work’s position within a field of …

Waterpower : A Geophysical And Archaeological Investigation Of The Waterpower System At The West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York, Kimberly A. Finch

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Waterpower: A Geophysical and Archaeological Investigation of the Waterpower System at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York, describes the results of ground penetrating radar surveys and archaeological excavation undertaken by Michigan Technological University (MTU) archaeologists during the summer of 2003 at the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring, New York. 2003 constituted MTU's second field season at the foundry. Fieldwork concentrated on the foundry's waterpower system, an intricate network of surface and subsurface drains, races, flumes, waterwheels, turbines, dams, and ponds that powered operations and regulated water flow throughout the site. Archaeologists utilized non-destructive geophysical technology, which expedited survey, …
