Assessing The Impact Of Movies Upon An Individual's Image Formation Concerning A Given Destination, Jeeyeon (Jeannie) Hahm Jan 2004

Assessing The Impact Of Movies Upon An Individual's Image Formation Concerning A Given Destination, Jeeyeon (Jeannie) Hahm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of watching a movie is a common way to be entertained in this day and age. There are multiple ways in which people can enjoy a movie ranging from the big screen at a commercial theater, on their home's television, or even in a car while driving. One outcome associated with watching a destination movie might be that the viewer will be compelled to visit or not the location portrayed in the movie. It is a primary assumption of this thesis that movies have the ability to create or change an individual's image of a destination by its …

The Roles, Responsibilities, And Realities Of Married Adolescent Males And Adolescent Fathers: A Brief Literature Review, Gary Barker, Jorge Lyra, Benedito Medrado Jan 2004

The Roles, Responsibilities, And Realities Of Married Adolescent Males And Adolescent Fathers: A Brief Literature Review, Gary Barker, Jorge Lyra, Benedito Medrado

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From the perspective of developing countries, we know relatively little about married adolescent males and adolescent fathers, and much of what we know is inferred from research with young women or comes from a few specific regions in the world. However, there has been a growing interest in the issue on the part of researchers, policy-makers, and program staff. This interest has coincided with increasing attention in general to men, with gender studies, and with sexual and reproductive health initiatives. Early marriage and early childbearing are much more prevalent among young women than young men, and the negative consequences are …

Explaining Churn: Mass Society, Social Capital, & Community Churn, Delores Edelen Jan 2004

Explaining Churn: Mass Society, Social Capital, & Community Churn, Delores Edelen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Population churn--the population turnover experienced by a community--can have differential effects on a community. Mass society theory suggests that because the churn rate experienced by communities can contribute to their uprooting, fragmentation, and isolation, churn is a potent threat to the stability of our modern day communities. Social capital theory, to the contrary, suggests otherwise. Social capital theory suggests that churn can have positive effects on communities by bringing new migrants with valuable human capital skills and experiences to communities. These migrants bring to their new communities the potential for creating new jobs, spurring economic development, and for initiating housing …

Portraiture: Exploring The Language Of The Face, Rachel Aberle Jan 2004

Portraiture: Exploring The Language Of The Face, Rachel Aberle

Honors Capstones

This paper aims to answer the question 'how do portrait painters capture a person's personality through painting the expressive qualities of the face?'. The first half of the paper describes the anthropological research, taken from the disciplines of psychology, anthropology, and other social sciences studying perception, physiognomy, and caricature. The second half of the paper analyzes four portraits painted by well-known portraitists to relate the painting with the sitter's character. The findings lie in the application of the information gathered from the anthropological research to the specific portraits being studied. The resulting analysis is new knowledge; these portraits have never …

Alicia Sotero Vásquez: Police Brutality Against An Undocumented Mexican Woman, Rita Urquijo-Ruiz

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

This article focuses on police brutality and human rights violations in the United States. The author examines the infamous Riverside Sheriff's brutal beating of an undocumented Mexican woman—which was captured and broadcast live via television—as exemplary of a particular historical relationship between Mexican labor, the U.S. nation-state, and the material conditions of immigrant laborers. Tracing this relationship through a historical survey of Mexican immigration from the turn of the twentieth century and placing the analysis in the context of Critical Race Theory, the article foregrounds the intersection of race, class, and gender. While the author focuses on the Riverside Sheriff's …

Africa's Quest For A Philosophy Of Decolonization, Messay Kebede Jan 2004

Africa's Quest For A Philosophy Of Decolonization, Messay Kebede

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This book discovers freedom in the colonial idea of African primitiveness. As human transcendence, freedom escapes the drawbacks of otherness, as defended by ethnophilosophy, while exposing the idiosyncratic inspiration of Eurocentric universalism. Decolonization calls for the reconnection with freedom, that is, with myth-making understood as the inaugural act of cultural pluralism. The cultural condition of modernization emerges when the return to the past deploys the future.
