A Glance Into The Life Of A Computerized Generation: A Case Study On Thai Teenagers Living In Bangkok, Chulanee Thianthai
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
In this fast paced world, computer and internet use have automatically become an essential part of metropolitan life. It is easy for those who were born in the older generation to notice the impact of computers and internet on themselves, but what about this young generation of Thai teenagers who are growing up in a computerized generation? What computer-related behavioral aspects do these teenagers find to be unique for their generation? In seeking the answer to this question, this study aims to explore six different areas. Topics of discussion concern: (1) Thai teenagers define their computerized generation; (2) The computerized …

Burakumin, Japan’s largest minority group, have been discriminated against throughout Japanese history for engaging in jobs that were considered to be defiling, e.g., slaughterers, tanners, and undertakers. Specifically, burakumin played the social and occupational roles despised by the majority Japanese, but those without which the Japanese society as a whole could not maintain its viable function, i.e., actual and symbolic processes of recycling whereby those which are dead and polluted were transformed into living and holy. In recent years, however, some burakumin scholars have begun to recast their identities; instead of examining the problem of being burakumin (the deficit model), …

Colonization And The Rule Of Law: Comparing The Effectiveness Of Common Law And Civil Law Countries, Sandra F. Joireman
Colonization And The Rule Of Law: Comparing The Effectiveness Of Common Law And Civil Law Countries, Sandra F. Joireman
Political Science Faculty Publications
The rule of law is one of the most important components of any explanation of cross-national differences in economic well-being. But what leads to better rule of law in a country? Using an institutional approach this paper probes the effect of legal systems in influencing the rule of law. There has long been speculation that the countries adopting English common law are better at providing legal dispute resolution than those adopting the continental forms of civil law. That speculative assessment is found to be true only in those countries that have been colonized, further analysis demonstrates that it is the …

Retributive Justice: The Gacaca Process In Rwanda, Sandra F. Joireman, Allison Corey
Political Science Faculty Publications
After decades of cycling violence between Hutu and Tutsi groups in Rwanda and Burundi, violence peaked in 1994 with a genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda, during which the Hutu majority slaughtered 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus, leaving the country with 120,000 accused génocidaires awaiting trial. Rwanda's gacaca courts were established as a response to the backlog of untried genocide cases. These courts disturbingly distinguish between genocide and war crimes committed during the same era, trying only those accused of genocide. This article argues that the gacaca process will contribute to the insecurity of all Rwandan citizens in the future, since …
Pottery And Mobility: A Functional Analysis Of Intermountain Brownware, Britt J Betenson
Pottery And Mobility: A Functional Analysis Of Intermountain Brownware, Britt J Betenson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Intermountain Brownware, is a late prehistoric ceramic type made by mobile hunter-gatherers that is found throughout southern Nevada, western Utah and northern Arizona. Most hunter-gather groups around the world are not pottery producers. Through interdisciplinary analysis, I examine the physical and morphological characteristics to understand the amount of labor invested in the construction and production of Intermountain Brownware. I then evaluate these results amongst environmental, historical, ethnological, and archaeological data to conclude that Intermountain Brownware possesses lower porosity, and is thinner and stronger than commonly reported. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is performed to empirically characterize food residues remaining in the …

Individual Aboriginal Rights, John W. Ragsdale Jr.
Individual Aboriginal Rights, John W. Ragsdale Jr.
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
This Article will, in Section I, deal with the legal development of the concept of individual aboriginal rights. It will focus on the Western Shoshone land claims before the Indian Claims Commission, and the federal government's trespass claims against the ranching operations of the redoubtable, irrepressible Dann sisters. Section II will explore the development and utilization of the doctrine of individual aboriginal rights in a series of cases involving the Dann sisters, subsequent Western Shoshone, and other efforts by native people to secure subsistence hunting and fishing rights and possession of or access to sacred sites. Section III will explore …
Recently Incarcerated Homeless Men's Opinions On Rehabilitation Programs, Heather Eleanor Mooney
Recently Incarcerated Homeless Men's Opinions On Rehabilitation Programs, Heather Eleanor Mooney
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Homelessness and incarceration have been recognized as national social problems that affect millions every year. Currently, about one-third of homeless men have also been incarcerated. The existence the population of doubly marginalized homeless felons indicates a very serious deficit within the status quo. This study utilizes a grassroots qualitative approach to further understanding aspects of this social problem. A snowball sample was conducted in a medium sized city in a Great Lakes state homeless shelter. Research was collected through in-depth qualitative interviews with the recently incarcerated homeless men about their opinions and experiences of rehabilitation programs in prison. This study …
The Battle For The University: The Vietnam-Era Student Movement At Universities In Central Illinois, David Bell
The Battle For The University: The Vietnam-Era Student Movement At Universities In Central Illinois, David Bell
Masters Theses
America in the 1960s ran the gamut of social, economic, and political changes, from the assassination of political leaders to the apocalyptic potential of the Cuban Missile Crisis; from President Lyndon B. Johnson's promises of a Great Society, to the paralyzing effects of the Vietnam War. At the center of these domestic and international battles lay the "baby boomers," the largest-ever generation of Americans, and, not coincidentally, the largest generation of college students to enter the "ivory towers" of higher education. Raised in an era defined by cries for civil rights and "participatory democracy," these youths entered higher education determined …
Culture, Hybridity And The Dialogical Self: Cases From The South Asian-American Diaspora, Sunil Bhatia, Anjali Ram
Culture, Hybridity And The Dialogical Self: Cases From The South Asian-American Diaspora, Sunil Bhatia, Anjali Ram
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
This article outlines a dialogical approach to understanding how South Asian-American women living in diasporic locations negotiate their multiple and often conflicting cultural identities. We specifically use the concept of voice to articulate the different forms of dialogicality--polyphonization, expropriation, and ventriloquation--that are involved in the acculturation experiences of two 2nd-generation South Asian-American women. In particular, we argue that it is important to think of acculturation of the South Asian-American women as essentially a contested, dynamic, and dialogical process. We demonstrate that such a dialogical process involves a constant moving back and forth between various cultural voices that are connected to …

Does Prison Harden Inmates? A Discontinuity-Based Approach, Keith M. Chen, Jesse M. Shapiro
Does Prison Harden Inmates? A Discontinuity-Based Approach, Keith M. Chen, Jesse M. Shapiro
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Some two million Americans are currently incarcerated, with roughly six hundred thousand to be released this year. Despite this, little is known about the effects of confinement conditions on the post-release lives of inmates. Focusing on post-release criminal activity, we identify the causal effect of prison conditions on recidivism rates by exploiting a discontinuity in the assignment of federal prisoners to security levels. We find that harsher prison conditions are associated with significantly more post-release crime.
