Do You Recall Where You Where When...?: Support For Automatic Encoding Of One's Location, Kristen Lea Neal Jan 2004

Do You Recall Where You Where When...?: Support For Automatic Encoding Of One's Location, Kristen Lea Neal

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The present experiment tested whether one's personal location is automatically encoded into memory. Twenty-one groups of students were given a tour of the Marshall University campus. At each of 10 locations on the tour, participants were told an interesting fact about the University. Participants were informed of a test following the tour assessing their recall of the facts. In addition, half of the participants were also told their recall of the location at which each fact was presented would be tested. Immediately following and two weeks after the tour, participants completed a memory test which assessed their (a) recognition of …

Domestic Violence In Appalachia With A Focus On Cabell County, Wv, Deborah Ann Moore Jan 2004

Domestic Violence In Appalachia With A Focus On Cabell County, Wv, Deborah Ann Moore

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study of domestic violence in Appalachia with a focus on Cabell County, West Virginia involves many aspects. The costs of domestic violence, as well as, how abused women here conceptualize the major contributors to abusive behavior in men are examined. The demographics of Cabell Co., WV are discussed. The effects of battering and violence on woman’s work and employability are examined. What I did not anticipate to find through the qualitative interviews is the absence of a honeymoon stage in Walker’s (1989) cycle of violence. Goode’s (1971) resource theory provides an influential explanation of violence in Appalachia where a …

Welfare As A Social Control In The United States, Jimmi Sue Brown Jan 2004

Welfare As A Social Control In The United States, Jimmi Sue Brown

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The question is whether the Clinton Administration “reforms” were a revolutionary concept or an extension of history’s pattern of forgetting the “deserving poor” and ignoring the “undeserving poor”. A literature search was conducted focusing on the deserving and undeserving poor in the United States over the past century. Historically, the deserving poor were defined as people who were impoverished as a consequence of old age, mental illness, physical illness and blindness or widowed and orphaned. The undeserving poor were people who were able to work, but did not and people of color. There have been occasions when the unemployed were …

Precious Red Coral: Markets And Meanings, Susan J. Torntore Jan 2004

Precious Red Coral: Markets And Meanings, Susan J. Torntore

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Beads and other ornamental items made of precious red coral have been utilized by various cultures worldwide for thousands of years. Depending on its properties and market context, this highly valued material has meant different things to different peoples through time. The current industry—based in Torre del Greco in southern Italy—reflects past traditions but also incorporates new ideas into the production of beads and jewelry for the three principal world markets: fashion, ethnic, and tourist. These reflect the historic trade and use of red coral beads in several West African, European, and American cultural settings. This article describes the Torrese …

Incised Dentalium Shell Beads In The Plateau Culture Area, Roderick Sprague Jan 2004

Incised Dentalium Shell Beads In The Plateau Culture Area, Roderick Sprague

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Whole dentalium and segments of dentalium shell have been used as beads in the Northwest Coast and interior Plateau culture areas both prehistorically and ethnographically. Incised whole shells, and no more than five known examples of incised segments, have been recovered from the Plateau, limited to archaeological contexts. A review of the reported incising clearly shows the use of design elements typical of the Plateau Culture Area as often also used on bone, antler, wood, and historic copper in addition to dentalium. The Asotin site (45-AS-9), one of the few well-dated Plateau burial sites with incised beads indicates that this …

Bead Making At Murano And Venice, B. Harvey Carroll Jr., Jamey D. Allen Jan 2004

Bead Making At Murano And Venice, B. Harvey Carroll Jr., Jamey D. Allen

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

"Bead Making at Murano and Venice," by B. Harvey Carroll, Jr., is a rare eyewitness account of beadmaking in and around Venice, Italy, towards the end of the First World War and documents the technology of the time as well as what impact the war had on the industry. Carroll's report takes us through the various steps in the production of drawn or tube beads and also provides a historical perspective of the industry. Although the report presents much useful information, we now know much more about most aspects of glass beadmaking and endnotes provide much additional information and clarification.

Figuring Myself Out: Certainty, Injury, And The Poststructuralist Repositioning Of Bodies Of Identity, James Haywood Rolling Jan 2004

Figuring Myself Out: Certainty, Injury, And The Poststructuralist Repositioning Of Bodies Of Identity, James Haywood Rolling

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

How does the named body refigure itself? Bodies are evidentiary. They are documentary. We position our bodies and juxtapose them in foreground to a tableau other bodies; self-images are traced against other images of identity. We position our bodies to tell stories—to tell self-histories, sometimes false, sometimes true, always incomplete. For each of us, our thinking—our image of self—tends to cohere around an identifiable, repeatable pattern of discursive meanings that we first inherit and then overwrite with newly experienced and refreshed meanings. Life stories are structures in flux, deconstructions. The source of injurious self-image appears to be wound up in …

Moving Beyond The Client Role: Helping Human Service Organizations Identify Program Participant’S Assets, Laura Nichols, Shannon Gleeson, Sandra Figueroa Jan 2004

Moving Beyond The Client Role: Helping Human Service Organizations Identify Program Participant’S Assets, Laura Nichols, Shannon Gleeson, Sandra Figueroa

Sociology

Human service agencies have traditionally provided services to a population considered "in need" of those services. Program participants are often seen solely as passive recipients of food, housing, health care, case management, etc. However, community developers, program evaluators, human service/development staff and administrators, as well as researchers are finding that involving program participants in the planning and administration of programs and research results in better programs, program utilization, and empowerment of program participants (Nichols 2002; Papineau and Kiely 1996).

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison Jan 2004

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Karl Barth is often misunderstood regarding his views of Scripture, hence we must survey his "ontology of Holy Scripture" and then discuss various misinterpretations of Barth's understanding of the nature of Scripture. Such men as David Mueller, Otto Weber, Arnold Come and T. F. Torrance and Evangelicals as C. Van Til, G. H. Clark, C. F. H. Henry and Bernard Ramm are shown to be deficient in their analysis of Barth's view of Scripture, especially as regards a bifurcation of the text and the Word of God.

Importation Of Obsidian At Cerro Palenque, Honduras: Results Of An Analysis By Edxrf, Julia A. Hendon Jan 2004

Importation Of Obsidian At Cerro Palenque, Honduras: Results Of An Analysis By Edxrf, Julia A. Hendon

Anthropology Faculty Publications

The results of source analysis by EDXRF of obsidian artifacts from the Mesoamerican site of Cerro Palenque in Honduras are reported and changes over time discussed. Sources of obsidian include Ixtepeque, El Chayal, Jalapa, San Martin Jilotepeque, and San Barolome in Guatemala. Some Pachuca obsidian from Mexico was also found. Honduran sources include La Esperanza and La Union. The implications of the obsidian sources are discussed in the context of changes at Cerro Palenque over time as it becomes the largest settlement in the lower Ulua Valley (Sula Valley) in the ninth century AD.
