Review Of American Arrivals: Anthropology Engages The New Immigration Edited By Nancy Foner, Mcc. Heyman Oct 2004

Review Of American Arrivals: Anthropology Engages The New Immigration Edited By Nancy Foner, Mcc. Heyman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Immigration to the United States since 1965, usually labeled "the new immigration," has several distinguishing features. First, the predominant source nations are in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, rather than Europe. The second is a new trend within this scenario, the diversification of destinations, such that migration involves not only Los Angeles and New York, but also numerous small cities in the Prairie and Great Plains states, locations that once received Europeans and Mexicans but have been little involved in international migration for decades. In order to understand the dramatic social and cultural changes stemming …

Surviving English, Connie Schomburg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes often serve as a starting place for new immigrants aged eighteen or older who want to learn "survival English." The students attending these classes are widely diverse in terms of motivations, educational and cultural backgrounds, English-language fluency, life experiences, and learning styles. Classes are designed to equip these adult learners with basic English-language abilities in the context of the situations they are likely to encounter daily at work and in the community. This personal essay explores the challenges faced and the strengths revealed by students in these classes as witnessed by an …

Review Of Slaughterhouse Blues: The Meat And Poultry Industry In North America By Donald D. Stull And Michael J. Broadway, Kendall Thu Oct 2004

Review Of Slaughterhouse Blues: The Meat And Poultry Industry In North America By Donald D. Stull And Michael J. Broadway, Kendall Thu

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Stull and Broadway capture fifteen years' experience examining structural shifts and community consequences of an increasingly industrialized meat production system in North America, with particular attention to the meatpacking sector. Their impressive, wide-ranging coverage of changing beef, poultry, and pork production systems and their influence on rural cultures will no doubt be a staple resource for scholars, policy makers, and communities in the Great Plains and elsewhere grappling with dramatic changes in our nation's food system.
An initial chapter aptly outlines the contours of agricultural industrialization, followed by a chapter each devoted specifically to the three major meat sectors. The …

Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas Oct 2004

Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume is a critical historiography of the nature and meaning of the Midewiwin as it was, and still is, practiced by southwestern, western, and northern Anishinaabeg (Ojibwa or Chippewa) in both Canada and the United States. A self-described "culturally sensitive outsider," Angel has approached his subject from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing heavily from religious studies and historic and ethnographic documentation. The origins and functions of the Midewiwin are examined within the contexts of Anishinaabeg religion and society. Angel takes issue with the classification of the Midewiwin as a "revitalization movement" or a "crisis cult" by demonstrating that the "essential …

Review Of Uniting Mountain And Plain: Cities, Law, And Environmental Change Along The Front Range By Kathleen A. Brosnan, Richard Hogan Oct 2004

Review Of Uniting Mountain And Plain: Cities, Law, And Environmental Change Along The Front Range By Kathleen A. Brosnan, Richard Hogan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Brosnan offers a remarkably well-researched and well-written analysis of the Colorado Front Range urban ecology, focusing on Denver (the financial and commercial capital), Colorado Springs (the tourist town), and Pueblo (the factory town). Denver's business leaders receive the bulk of the attention here, but their efforts to promote a diverse regional industrial hinterland lead the reader through the mining, farming, and grazing regions of nineteenth-century Colorado. The narrative does not follow localities so much as problems and possibilities, beginning with the problem of extinguishing Native American claims (chapter 2) and establishing irrigated agriculture (chapter 3). The histories of Colorado Springs …

Standard Of Review For Prosecutorial Use Of Race Evidence During Trial, Peter Chung Oct 2004

Standard Of Review For Prosecutorial Use Of Race Evidence During Trial, Peter Chung

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note argues that unfettered use of cultural evidence by prosecutors creates the same problems as would the use of evidence of race to show propensity of the accused to act. Using Wisconsin v. Chu as a case study, the author demonstrates that cultural evidence, just as any other evidence to show propensity to act, must rest upon the proper evidentiary foundation and that prosecutors must be sharply constrained in their use of cultural evidence.

Is Menopause Optimal?, Christian Zimmermann Oct 2004

Is Menopause Optimal?, Christian Zimmermann

Economics Working Papers

Various theories have been put forward to explain the fact that humans experience menopause while virtually no animals do. This paper aims to investigate one such theory: children provide a savings technology into old age, but as human babies are usually large and have long gestation periods, a substantial risk of death exists for the mother as she bears children. It seems therefore appropriate to impose a stopping rule for fertility. Given an objective (support for old age) and demographics (mortality of mother and children), an optimal age for menopause can be calculated. Using demographic data from populations that have …

Fordist Applied Research In The Era Of The Five-Dollar Day, Georgios P. Loizides, Subhash R. Sonnad

Peer Reviewed Articles

This article provides a description of the early attempts at applied social research and research driven policies and procedures used in the assessment of the employees and the consequent rewards and punishments meted out by the Ford Motor Company during the late Progressive Era. An additional aim of this paper is to show the relevance and signijkance of these attempts and to examine the extent to which early Ford research can inform our applied research today. In particular, this study examines the early data collection efforts by investigators of the Ford Motor Company Sociological Department. These took place in the …

Portals To Knowledge: Confluence And Conflict Between Enlightenment And Postmodern Currencies, Benjamin G. Lanier-Nabors Oct 2004

Portals To Knowledge: Confluence And Conflict Between Enlightenment And Postmodern Currencies, Benjamin G. Lanier-Nabors

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

In order to provide any viable critique of twenty-first-century discourses -- whether signified by late capitalism, epistemological hegemony, cultural domination, or globalization (the catch-word for all of these) -- one must not employ an ahistorical or static lens; alternatively, one must dredge up and analyze the sediments that underlie current discourses, and many of these sediments are found in the eighteenth century. More specifically, by reading the thoughts of such writers as Joseph Addison and Jonathan Swift, one is forced to read the links and antipathies between the discursive economies of epistemology -- philosophical, scientific, and economic -- …

Cultural Topology: An Introduction To Postmodern Mathematics, Brent M. Blackwell Oct 2004

Cultural Topology: An Introduction To Postmodern Mathematics, Brent M. Blackwell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Editors' Introduction]

This essay develops a new way of thinking about the cultural relationships among and within the sciences and the arts through a new understanding of the term postmodernism that at once derives from literary theory and the mathematical discipline of topology. While topology forms the main vertebra of this connective approach in its capacity as the mathematics of connectivity, quantum mechanics and non-Euclidean geometry -- the atlas and axis of this spinal column -- form the context through which this “postmodern” approach will develop. However, in order to position topology as a “postmodern” branch of mathematics, some brief …

Church Growth Consulting: Evolution Of An Intervention, Alan Mcmahan Oct 2004

Church Growth Consulting: Evolution Of An Intervention, Alan Mcmahan

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The rise of the church growth movement in the early 1970’s 1 produced new insights and understanding as to how churches experienced growth and decline. In the years since then an entire industry has emerged to further church growth research and to deliver the resulting insights to pastors and churches. These delivery methods have taken many different forms ranging from formal seminary curriculums, to seminars and workshops, to books and audio or videotapes and computer programs, to expert consultations. As might be predicted, the ability of each delivery system to actually empower lasting, fruitful change among churches and leaders varies.
