Notes On A Collection Of Amphibians And Reptiles From El Salvador, Twan A. A. M. Leenders, Gregory J. Watkins-Colwell
Postilla
We report here on recent collections of amphibians and reptiles from El Salvador, in western Central America. More than 600 specimens of amphibians and reptiles were collected on field trips during 2001 and 2002, representing 51 species: one salamander, 11 anurans, 22 lizards, and 17 snakes. One lizard, Mesoscincus managuae (Sauria: Scincidae) is a new national record. Conservation needs and activities in the country are also discussed.

Change Of Heart Among Aboriginal Canadians Toward The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Project, 1970-2003, Galina V. Kirsanova
Change Of Heart Among Aboriginal Canadians Toward The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Project, 1970-2003, Galina V. Kirsanova
Arctic and Northern Studies
The last three decades witnessed an astonishing change of heart among the Mackenzie Valley and Delta's aboriginal groups toward the reemerged Mackenzie Valley Pipeline project and associated industrial development. Vehement confrontation between indigenous residents of the northern Homelands and proponents of a new industrial Frontier has given way to mutually beneficial cooperation. This thesis examines the factors of this attitudinal change. First, the Berger Report and aboriginal testimonies are used to reveal the roots of the previous native opposition to the project, i.e., lack of control, inadequate capacities, and possible threats to subsistence. Next is the analysis of the current …
Touristic Encounters Of An Intercultural Kind: Communication Between Volunteers And International Visitors At A Visitors Information Center, Sherrill Lea Peterson
Touristic Encounters Of An Intercultural Kind: Communication Between Volunteers And International Visitors At A Visitors Information Center, Sherrill Lea Peterson
Communication
This qualitative research examined the lived experience of volunteers in providing information to international travelers at a Visitors Information Center. The research focused on intercultural communication during these touristic encounters. Interpersonal communication and meaning engagement practices between volunteer information providers and international visitors were examined from a narrative theoretical perspective. Narratives of six volunteer information providers were gathered using conversational interviews and analyzed using the method of thematic analysis. Six themes emerged from volunteers' narratives of their experience: independent/package tour travelers, visitors' expectations, information as product/process, foreign language skills, adaptability and accommodation, and public inebriation of homeless local residents. Contrary …

"We Dance Because We Are IñUpiaq", IñUpiaq Dance In Barrow: Performance And Identity, Hiroko Ikuta
Anthropology
Dance, like other forms of expressive culture, is an important vehicle for creating, maintaining, and expressing identity. Founded in the early 1950s, the Barrow Dancers, with a membership of more than sixty, perform on important occasions in Alaska and outside the state for Native and non-Native audiences. For the Barrow Dancers, song, gesture, and drumming are means of creating and maintaining continuity in a community undergoing rapid social change. Collectively, the troop appears to dance with greater freedom and innovation for local audiences whereas their commoditized performances for outsiders are more formal and repetitive. The Barrow Dancers also perform at …
The Use Of Aspect In A Gwich'in Narrative, Qwynten Daelgar Richards
The Use Of Aspect In A Gwich'in Narrative, Qwynten Daelgar Richards
Anthropology
This work is an investigation of the role of viewpoint aspect in highlighting and fore grounding information in discourse, and in structuring narrative discourse within a Gwich'in narrative. The purpose is to contribute to a clearer understanding of how aspect functions cross-linguistically. The focus of the analysis is on the perfective/imperfective contrast which involves speaker choice. The findings are that there is an interesting correlation between shift in narrative episode and shift in viewpoint aspect, and additionally, that the use of the perfective does highlight and mark significant information in the narrative. The study also examines the narrative in terms …
