“Judicial Nationalism” In International Law: National Identity And Judicial Autonomy At The Icj, Adam M. Smith
“Judicial Nationalism” In International Law: National Identity And Judicial Autonomy At The Icj, Adam M. Smith
ExpressO
To many, the International Court of Justice’s allowance for a State to have a co-national on the bench when the Court hears its case is an affront to “justice.” The unstated assumption—under which both the critics of the practice and the States who demand it operate—is that national judges will view co-nationals with greater sympathy than they do foreigners. Despite its intuitive appeal, it is troubling that States, critics and academics alike have accepted this assumption with little questioning. In fact, nothing on “judicial nationalism” in the ICJ has appeared in the academic literature since the 1960s. Given the ICJ’s …

The Practice Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper
This paper lays out some of the basics of a language-based, person-centered, or agentic model of practice for nonprofit organizations, voluntary action and philanthropy within the emerging domain of commons theory. Six principles are identified for the practice of commons. Two threats to the production of common goods - bureaucratization and colonization of the life world - are discussed and evaluated as limitations of the practice of commons.

The Tampa Heights Greenprinting Initiative: An Attempt At Community Building Through Park Revitalization, Maya Marie Harper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I discuss the Tampa Heights Greenprinting Initiative, an initiative to build community in a gentrifying neighborhood. I was primarily hired to find out what changes residents of Tampa Heights desired in their chosen park, observe the Greenprinting process, and write a report that could be used in future initiatives.
Due to my Anthropological training, I paid attention to the wider context associated with this project. I paid as much attention to who was not there as I did to who was there. The applied nature of my program enabled me to not only document the socio-economic factors …
Investigating Second Seminole War Sites In Florida: Identification Through Limited Testing, Christine Bell
Investigating Second Seminole War Sites In Florida: Identification Through Limited Testing, Christine Bell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis uses the results of limited testing at the Fort Dade (1836-1842) and Hope Homestead (1842-ca. 1900) archaeological sites to establish a method for quickly identifying threatened sites with minimal disturbance to surrounding areas. Artifact analysis, pattern recognition, and comparison with similar known sites are key elements. Pedestrian survey, metal detection, posthole and shovel testing, and test excavation are tools used to accomplish this. Artifact analysis is used to establish date ranges for the sites, as well as the material variation between military and homestead occupations. Artifacts used for analysis include glass, ceramics, nails, arms and personal items. Quantitative …

Reflections On Contemporary Design Education: The Green Map System As A Tool For A Better Understanding Of Sustainable Practices., Paulo Souza, Alessandro Dos Santos Faria
Reflections On Contemporary Design Education: The Green Map System As A Tool For A Better Understanding Of Sustainable Practices., Paulo Souza, Alessandro Dos Santos Faria
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The main focus of this paper is Design Education and the need for implementing sustainability concepts within design disciplines. This approach reflects the urgently need of searching new methodologies in order to find the needs of the present without compromising the future generations ability in finding their own needs, according to the World Commission on Development and Environment, 1987. In this sense, some changes in design methodologies, particularly in design education, are discussed and pointed out as a matter of priority. The perspective of sustainability imposes new concepts of development, new social behavior and new cultural paradigms, which can be …

The Study Of Taiwan Aboriginal Culture On Product Design., Tyan-Yu Wu, Chi-Hsien Hsu, Rungtai Lin
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Taiwan aboriginal art and craft is one of the most beautiful and primitive cultures, which displays a strong characteristic within Taiwan art, especially in its primitive form and symbolic meaning. These characteristics have a potential to generate a unique product to enhance the significant localized culture, among Global market. However, the decline of Taiwan aboriginal cultures makes us rethink its perspective in design for the extension of aboriginal culture. The motive of this study attempts to extend the Taiwan aboriginal culture by adding cultural value into consumer products and, furthermore to promote its cultural identity in the global market.
Grounding Design In Complexity., Silvia Pizzocaro
Grounding Design In Complexity., Silvia Pizzocaro
DRS Biennial Conference Series
As the frontier of present interdisciplinary sciences, complexity thinking can provide models to approach design research issues. Adaptation to the demands of a complex world requires to generate knowledge, and design knowledge, operating within a context of complexity, more than ever requires expanded and integrated ways of thought. Although the relationship between design and complexity has been explored for decades, the theory of complexity has only recently started to influence the debate in the professional community. Considering design as a wide dimension of making and planning disciplines, here it will be assumed not only that design theory and design thinking …

Bridging Cultures In Electronic Communication New Multiliteracy Models For Interaction Design., Patricia Search
Bridging Cultures In Electronic Communication New Multiliteracy Models For Interaction Design., Patricia Search
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In my research I am developing new multiliteracy models for computer interface design. These design models are derived from dynamic, time-based communication structures used in oral communication in Indigenous cultures. The research uses visual patterns to represent the changing semantic structures in an interactive information space where there are numerous networks of associations. These multiliteracy models integrate the semiotics of early oral cultures with the semiotics of modern electronic communication. They reflect pluralistic, aural-visual, community-based communication styles that differ from Western perspectives of temporal sequencing, logical analysis, and fixed hierarchies. For these reasons these designs have important implications for improving …
Kinds Of Anthropomorphic Form., Carl Disalvo, Jodi Forlizzi, Francine Gemperle
Kinds Of Anthropomorphic Form., Carl Disalvo, Jodi Forlizzi, Francine Gemperle
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper is a report on ongoing basic design research into anthropomorphic forms in design. With this research, we are building a core of design knowledge to inform both design studies and design practice. Our intention is to present an understanding of anthropomorphic forms that can be used for the interpretation and critique of existing forms and provide guidance in the use of anthropomorphic forms in new products. Towards these ends we are interested in three fundamental questions; what are the kinds of anthropomorphic forms, how are anthropomorphic forms created, and how are anthropomorphic forms used. In this paper we …

Articulating Knowledge From The Vikings To The Digital Age: Designing Digital Artifacts In Research., Dagny Stuedahl, Andrew Morrison, Ole Smørdal
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses the design approach for participatory design of digital systems and routines for qualitative, cultural-historical research and reconstruction of a Viking boat. The digital system involves recording, digitalizing, editing, categorizing and archiving audio-visual empirical material. The design work involves adaption of heterogeneous technologies to help the researcher in his methodological and analytical work. Concepts on negotiaton from actor-network theory and on activities are used to suggest theoretical approach for participatory design of heterogeneous systems in research.
