Reproductive Biology Of The Opossum Pipefish, Microphis Brachyurus Lineatus, In Tecolutla Estuary, Veracruz, Mexico, Martha Edith Miranda-Marure, Jose Antonio Martinez-Perez, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The reproductive biology of the opossum pipefish, Microphis brachyurus lineatus, was investigated in Tecolutla estuary, Veracruz, Mexico, to determine sex ratio, size at maturity, gonadal and brood pouch histology, reproductive seasonality, and fecundity of this little-known syngnathid. A total of 345 fish were collected between 1995–1998, with an overall sex ratio of 1:1.35 favoring females. Brooding males made up 45% of the population, resulting in an operational sex ratio of 1:2.45 heavily favoring females. All males > 90 mm SL were considered sexually mature, as this was the size at which the brood pouch was clearly developed. Females > 110 mm …

Unique Property: An Annotated Bibliography, Nancy Levit, Robert R. M. Verchick

Faculty Works

This bibliography covers law review articles and supplemental A.L.R. entries published after 1997. We also include a handful of especially interesting pieces published in or before 1997, which we believe are just too good to pass up. A.L.R. entries, whose titles are usually self-explanatory, are cited, but not annotated. Similarly, articles that concern only a single case or a single state are cited, but not annotated.

Despite considerable control efforts, malaria still remains the most prevalent and devastating disease in the tropics. With more than 40% of the world population at risk, malaria undermines the welfare of several South American, Asian and African states, endangering the survival of children (killing one child every 30 seconds) and straining scarce resources. It is estimated that US $ 2 billion is spent on malaria control and treatment programmes in Africa annually. The problem is becoming increasingly difficult to manage because of the continuous intensification and spread of resistance to anti-malarial drugs by the parasites. This poses a serious threat …

Expression Of The Glossina Proteolytic Lectin (Gpl) Gene In Tsetse Flies And Other Haematophagous Arthropods, Marion Burugu Warigia Jan 2004

Expression Of The Glossina Proteolytic Lectin (Gpl) Gene In Tsetse Flies And Other Haematophagous Arthropods, Marion Burugu Warigia

All Master’s Theses

African animal trypanosomosis, transmitted by the tsetse fly (Glossina spp.) remains a major constraint to food security in areas of Africa that hold the continent's greatest potential for expanded agriculture production. The flies also transmit the parasite responsible for human sleeping sickness. Other haematophagous arthropods like stable flies also transmit trypanosomes mechanically. Mechanical transmission only accounts for a small percentage (-16 % ) of the trypanosomes transmission since the haematophagous arthropods do not provide an environment for tr)-panosome development within their tissues unlike in tsetse flies. The life cycle of the parasitic African trypanosome in its invertebrate vector begins when …

A project, (Agro-ecosystem Management for Community-Based Integrated Malaria Control in East African Irrigation Schemes) is currendy underway in Mwca Division, Kirinyaga District, Kenya, under the auspices o f the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada and the International Centre …

Biochemical Examination And Identification Of Botanicals Active Against Adult Anopheles Gambiae From The Coastal Region Of Kenya, Josiah Ochieng Odalo Jan 2004

Biochemical Examination And Identification Of Botanicals Active Against Adult Anopheles Gambiae From The Coastal Region Of Kenya, Josiah Ochieng Odalo

All Master’s Theses

Malaria still remains one of the most important tropical parasitic and vector-borne diseases in terms of geographical distribution, incidence, the extent of the morbidity and mortality. It is endemic in about 100 countries inhabited by >40010 of the world's population with at least 500 million clinical cases reported each year. More than 90% of these cases occur in Africa, where it is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality among infants, young children, pregnant women, non-immune travelers, refugees, displaced persons and labourers entering endemic zones. Management of malaria has become more difficult due to the development of …

Bankrupting Trademarks, Xuan-Thao Nguyen Jan 2004

Bankrupting Trademarks, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Articles

The explosive growth of technology in the last two decades has vastly expanded intellectual property jurisprudence and elevated intellectual property to a heightened status in the marketplace. Indeed, a company's intellectual property assets may now be its most valuable corporate assets. Moreover, the property value of some trademarks is significantly greater than that of the trademark owner's physical assets.

The term “intellectual property” is commonly understood to include patents, trade secrets, copyrights, and trademarks. Yet a paradigm has been constructed and enforced over the last fifteen years wherein only patents, trade secrets, and copyrights are included. The paradigm specifically excludes …

Getting Serious About User-Friendly Mass Market Licensing For Software, Robert W. Gomulkiewicz Jan 2004

Getting Serious About User-Friendly Mass Market Licensing For Software, Robert W. Gomulkiewicz

Articles

Software publishers use standard form end user licenses (“EULAs”) in mass market transactions on a regular basis. Most software users find EULAs perplexing and generally ignore them. Scholars, however, have focused on them intently. In the past twenty years over a hundred scholarly articles have been written on the subject. Most of these articles criticize EULAs and argue that courts should not enforce them. In their critique of EULAs, some scholars examine the adequacy of the offer, acceptance, and consideration. Others discuss EULAs as part of the troublesome issue of standard form contracting, and whether standard forms, on balance, harm …

Vanishing Vaccinations: Why Are So Many Americans Opting Out Of Vaccinating Their Children?, Steve P. Calandrillo Jan 2004

Vanishing Vaccinations: Why Are So Many Americans Opting Out Of Vaccinating Their Children?, Steve P. Calandrillo

Articles

Part I of this Article details the historical development and medical achievements made possible by vaccines. From Edward Jenner to Jonas Salk to Albert Sabin, immense strides have been made in eradicating or substantially eliminating some of the worst diseases in human history. Smallpox, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, influenza, hepatitis A and B, and even the chicken pox are all now largely preventable.

Literally hundreds of millions of deaths have been avoided and many more lives markedly improved, to say nothing of the financial ramifications for the American healthcare system. All fifty states have therefore enacted compulsory …
