Evaluation Of Agronomic Performance Of Forage Grasses In Tiahuanaco, Justiniano Mamani Condori Jan 2004

Evaluation Of Agronomic Performance Of Forage Grasses In Tiahuanaco, Justiniano Mamani Condori

Theses and Dissertations

Most families in the area of Tiahuanaco, Bolivia participate in livestock production, mainly cattle breeding. The primary feed sources for livestock in this area are native grasses, barley, and, to a smaller degree, oats. These grasses have low yield because of climate and soil conditions. This area does not have enough forage, especially during the dry season, and the animals are not regularly fed during the year. Consequently, animal production is low. This research was conducted during 2001 and 2002 at the Bolivian Catholic University campus, Farmer’s Academic Unit of Tiahuanaco, Ingavi Province, La Paz, Bolivia. Study site locations were …

Turning Worms: Some Thoughts On Liabilities For Spreading Computer Infections, Richard Owens Jan 2004

Turning Worms: Some Thoughts On Liabilities For Spreading Computer Infections, Richard Owens

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Two aspects of the virus/worm liability problem are of particular note. The first is how tightly the Internet binds together many possible defendants; those who build and run it, those who populate it with increasingly complex electronic commerce Web sites, those who provide terminal software, those who send electronic mails, those who design its security algorithms, those who insure it, and those who hack it, amongst others.

The second aspect is how speculative such a review is. Little case law pertains. Even the language of the law(what does it really mean when we assess liability on the basis of a …

Assessment Of Problem-Solving Abilities In Normal Adolescents, Kelley Ann Crownover Jan 2004

Assessment Of Problem-Solving Abilities In Normal Adolescents, Kelley Ann Crownover

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examined the problem-solving abilities of adolescents, using a newly designed test, RAPS (the Rapid Assessment of Problem-Solving), by Marshall & Karow (2001). The tool is a modified version of the Twenty Questions Test that measures performance based on the number of questions asked to solve each problem, the percent of constraint-seeking questions used, and the efficiency or the amount of information gained from the first four questions asked. Participants included a total of 20 children with no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders who were categorized by age groups (10-11, 12-13, 14-15, and 16-17) with five subjects in …

An Assessment Of Predation By The Lobate Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi (Agassiz, 1865) On Ichthyoplankton In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Angela R. Allen

Open Access Master's Theses

I investigated the importance of predation on fish eggs and larvae by the lo bate ctenophore, Mnemiopsis leidyi, in Narragansett Bay, RI, USA, by measuring the abundance and distribution of M. leidyi and its ichthyoplankton prey at five stations in the East and West Passages of the bay from May to August, 2002. During early-June, the M. leidyi population reached an abundance of 682 m-3 in the mid-bay, while fish egg densities were 3.2 m-3 and fish larvae were absent. In late June, a maximum larval fish density of 34 100m-3 was observed, and ctenophore abundance …

Students Who Self-Injure : How Can Counselors Help, Martha Watter Jan 2004

Students Who Self-Injure : How Can Counselors Help, Martha Watter

Graduate Research Papers

It is estimated that approximately two million Americans self-injure (Nadelson, 2000). Generally, females are most likely to self-injure and usually begin in their teens. Approximately 72 percent of those who self-injure use deliberate cutting (Ng, 1998). Although possibly new to many common civilians, self-injury has been called the addiction of the 90's according to many researchers (Nadelson, 2000). This paper describes what self-injury is, when it usually begins, and the many reasons why an adolescent chooses to self injure himself or herself. Each teen should be treated as an individual, although, most often, self-injurers come from similar family situations and/or …

Reflections About My Second Year Of Teaching Reading, Molly Melloy Recker Jan 2004

Reflections About My Second Year Of Teaching Reading, Molly Melloy Recker

Graduate Research Papers

On the second day of school, I realized that four students had entered my first grade classroom – reading. As that school day concluded, at the beginning of my second year of teaching, I remember sitting down at my desk, and thinking to myself, "Now what?" These were not the students I was expecting.

In this paper I explain how I adapted my reading beliefs and teaching practices to meet the challenge the four students posed to me. I describe each student, and their reading behaviors. Next, I discuss perspectives about early literacy, in order to examine my beliefs in …

Literature Response Journals And Students Entitled To Special Education Services, Andrea J. Safina

Graduate Research Papers

The books chosen to be read aloud were from different genres and about varying topics. The responses were also examined to see if the genre read had any impact on the students' responses.

The responses made by the students fell into eight categories and genre did not affect the response pattern when students were responding to books read aloud by the teacher. The students still made more …

Writing As A New Component Of English As A Second Language Programs For Young Russian Children, Elena Voronina Jan 2004

Writing As A New Component Of English As A Second Language Programs For Young Russian Children, Elena Voronina

Graduate Research Papers

This project is based on the fundamental idea that oral and written languages develop simultaneously and mutually support development of each other. Reading and writing are two language processes which are impossible to separate from each other, whether learning one's native language or a foreign language. However, in Russian English Foreign Language (EFL) programs this is not the case. The main focus for five and six year olds in these programs is oral communication, the ability to speak with your partner and comprehend what is being spoken. For young learners writing may facilitate language development. The language becomes not just …
