Effect Of Pig Weaning Age And Commingling After The Nursery Phase On Humoral And Behavioral Indicators Of Well-Being And On Growth Performance, Sarah C. Arthur, Mari E. Davis, Jason K. Apple, Charles V. Maxwell

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Two hundred and sixteen pigs were weaned at 14 or 21 d of age to determine the effect of weaning age and commingling after the nursery phase on growth and behavior of pigs in a wean-to-finish facility. Pigs were divided into older and younger age groups and allotted 12 pigs/pen with nine replications of each group. At the end of the nursery phase (d 34 after weaning), one-half of the pigs in each group were removed and commingled for the grower/finisher phase and the other half remained in their original pens. Beginning at weaning (d 0), pigs were monitored via …

How A Drug Becomes ‘Ethnic’: Law, Commerce, And The Production Of Racial Categories In Medicine, Jonathan Kahn Jan 2004

How A Drug Becomes ‘Ethnic’: Law, Commerce, And The Production Of Racial Categories In Medicine, Jonathan Kahn

Faculty Scholarship

A drug called BiDil is poised to become the first drug ever approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat heart failure in African Americans - and only African Americans. This article explores the story of BiDil and considers some of its broader implications for the use of racial categories in law, medicine, and science. It argues that BiDil is an ethnic drug today as much, if not more because of the interventions of law and commerce as because of any biomedical considerations. The article is, first, a retrospective analysis of how law, commerce, science, and medicine interacted …

The Reporter's Rejoinder, Daniel S. Kleinberger Jan 2004

The Reporter's Rejoinder, Daniel S. Kleinberger

Faculty Scholarship

The word "rejoinder" connotes a reply to criticism, and that connotation sets the scope of this short essay. This Rejoinder will leave aside (albeit with thanks) the articles that explain the background to, the context for, or particular aspects of the Uniform Limited Partnership Act (2001). Instead, this Rejoinder will focus on the three articles that purport to find a blemish (Professor Bishop), a general theoretical deficiency (Mr. Callison and Dean Vestal), or a fundamental misconception (Professor Ribstein) in the new Act.

What Does Covenant Mean For Relationships, Margaret F. Brinig, Steven L. Nock Jan 2004

What Does Covenant Mean For Relationships, Margaret F. Brinig, Steven L. Nock

Journal Articles

In this piece, we will first provide an analysis of covenant as we see it. We will continue with an original empirical test of whether covenant relationships differ from others, based upon new data from Louisiana, which offers both covenant and standard marriages. What we will try to argue and prove is that, even granting the differences between couples who choose covenant marriages from those who do not, something special happens to the relationship itself, or the spouses in it, when they choose the covenant marriage option. We conclude by relating what we have found to the more common choice …

Prescribed Fire Impacts To Amphibians And Reptiles In Shelterwood-Harvested Oak-Dominated Forests, Patrick D. Keyser, David J. Sausville, W. Mark Ford, Donald J. Schwab, Patrick H. Brose Jan 2004

Prescribed Fire Impacts To Amphibians And Reptiles In Shelterwood-Harvested Oak-Dominated Forests, Patrick D. Keyser, David J. Sausville, W. Mark Ford, Donald J. Schwab, Patrick H. Brose

Virginia Journal of Science

As part of a larger study examining the role of prescribed fire in regenerating upland oaks (Quercus spp.), seasonal prescribed burns (winter, spring, summer, and unburned control) were applied to first-stage shelterwood-harvested stands on Horsepen Wildlife Management Area in the Virginia Piedmont in 1995. Because fire impacts are poorly documented for herpetofaunal communities, we surveyed these stands in 1996 capturing 133 individuals of ten species during over 12,720 pitfall trapnights. We found no significant differences in relative abundance of Eastern Red-backed Salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) (P = 0.26), American Toads (Bufo americanus) (P = 0.93), …

Response Of Small Mammal Populations To Fescue Hayfield Conversion To Native Warm Season Grasses In Bath County, Virginia, Michael T. Mengak Jan 2004

Response Of Small Mammal Populations To Fescue Hayfield Conversion To Native Warm Season Grasses In Bath County, Virginia, Michael T. Mengak

Virginia Journal of Science

I investigated the effect on small mammal populations of converting an existing fescue (Festuca arundinacea) hayfield to switchgrass (Panicium virgatum) on the George Washington National Forest at Hidden Valley in Bath County, Virginia. Native warm season grasses are thought to provide better habitat than fescue pastures for Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and several species of grassland birds as well as herbivorous small mammals. I established one live-trapping grid and conducted trapping (pre-treatment) in both the switchgrass (treatment) and the fescue (control) field in March and May 1997. The treatment field was sprayed with glyphosate …

PCOM Scholarly Works

In situ hybridization with 3DNA dendrimers is a novel tool for detecting low levels of mRNA in tissue sections and whole embryos. Fluorescently labeled dendrimers were used to identify cells that express mRNA for the skeletal muscle transcription factor MyoD in the early chick embryo. A small population of MyoD mRNA positive cells was found in the epiblast prior to the initiation of gastrulation, two days earlier than previously detected using enzymatic or radiolabeled probes for mRNA. When isolated from the epiblast and placed in culture, the MyoD mRNA positive cells were able to differentiate into skeletal muscle cells. These …

Variability In Springtime Thaw In The Terrestrial High Latitudes: Monitoring A Major Control On The Biospheric Assimilation Of Atmospheric Co2 With Spaceborne Microwave Remote Sensing, Kyle C. Mcdonald, John S. Kimball, Eni G. Njoku, Reiner Zimmermann, Maosheng Zhao Jan 2004

Njoku, Reiner Zimmermann, Maosheng Zhao

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Evidence is presented from the satellite microwave remote sensing record that the timing of seasonal thawing and subsequent initiation of the growing season in early spring has advanced by approximately 8 days from 1988 to 2001 for the pan-Arctic basin and Alaska. These trends are highly variable across the region, with North America experiencing a larger advance relative to Eurasia and the entire region. Interannual variability in the timing of spring thaw as detected from the remote sensing record corresponded directly to seasonal anomalies in mean atmospheric CO2 concentrations for the region, including the timing of the seasonal draw …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Treatment of experimental animals with prototypical enzyme inducers represents a useful tool to characterize the role of different isozymes in drug metabolism and to improve our knowledge on factors regulating their synthesis at the transcriptional level. The effect of model enzyme inducers on phase II (conjugating) enzyme families, including UDP-glucuronosyltransferase’s and glutathione-S-transferase’s, has been well characterized in rodent liver. More recently, the effect of inducers on the expression of canalicular multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (Mrp2) has been focused upon. The identification of a number of conjugated drugs as Mrp2 substrates suggests that both the conjugation and transport systems act coordinately …

Feasibility Study Of A Cognitive Behavioral Smoking Cessation Intervention For Adolescent Males In Residential Treatment, Flora Casallas Jan 2004

Feasibility Study Of A Cognitive Behavioral Smoking Cessation Intervention For Adolescent Males In Residential Treatment, Flora Casallas

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The current study examined the effectiveness of a modified, empirically-based smoking cessation intervention, originally designed for teenagers in public school settings, but applied to actively smoking adolescents in residential treatment. The cognitive-behavioral intervention, developed by the American Lung Association (ALA, 2001) and researchers at West Virginia University, called Not-On-Tobacco (N-O-T), provides a total-health approach to helping teenagers quit smoking or to reducing the number of cigarettes smoked. The 10-session intervention was delivered over five consecutive weeks to eight adolescent males ranging in age 13 to 16 and in grades 8 to 10, living in a residential treatment community (RTC) located …

Anxiety Sensitivity : Validity Of The Anxiety Sensitivity Profile On A Clinical Sample, Sharon V. Elwell Jan 2004

Anxiety Sensitivity : Validity Of The Anxiety Sensitivity Profile On A Clinical Sample, Sharon V. Elwell

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The psychometric properties of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) have been criticized. Although it has been the gold standard in research and assessment, its reliability (i.e., internal consistency) has been questioned. There are doubts about its ability to identify accurately the underlying factors for anxiety sensitivity. To provide a more accurate description of the anxiety sensitivity construct, Taylor and Cox (1998) developed the Anxiety Sensitivity Profile (ASP) and performed analyses based on a sample of 349 university students. The current study utilized a clinical sample to test the hypotheses that the ASP would have convergent validity with the ASI and …

Thomas Jefferson Counts Himself Into The Presidency, David Fontana, Bruce Ackerman Jan 2004

Thomas Jefferson Counts Himself Into The Presidency, David Fontana, Bruce Ackerman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The Constitution instructs the President of the Senate to open the ballots submitted by members of the Electoral College, but it provides little guidance when a ballot turns out to be defective. This article provides the first in-depth consideration of two early precedents. Both Vice-President John Adams and Vice-President Thomas Jefferson confronted problems when counting the electoral votes in 1797 and 1801, respectively. Both men were placed in the awkward position of ruling on matters involving an election in which they were leading presidential candidates, but Jefferson's problem was more serious. In 1801, Georgia's electors cast their votes for Jefferson …

Formation Of A Stress-Induced Check Mark On The Otoliths Of Juvenile Fishes: Implications For Mesocosm Studies, Thomas R. Reinert, Donald M. Baltz Jan 2004

Formation Of A Stress-Induced Check Mark On The Otoliths Of Juvenile Fishes: Implications For Mesocosm Studies, Thomas R. Reinert, Donald M. Baltz

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Daily otolith increment widths of spot Leiostomus xanthurus and spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus were examined experimentally in field mesocosms for 5 to 7 days in various habitat types. Daily otolith increments were used as a surrogate for daily somatic growth so that growth prior to capture and handling could be examined. For both species, possible effects of habitat types were confounded by an overall decrease in daily increment widths during the experimental period when compared to increment widths prior to capture. Several spotted seatrout inadvertently captured during mesocosm deployment provided a means for assessing if there was a significant mesocosm …

The First Larval Stage Of Microprosthema Semilaeve (Von Martens, 1872) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Stenopodidea) Obtained In The Laboratory, Joel W. Martin, Joseph W. Goy Jan 2004

The First Larval Stage Of Microprosthema Semilaeve (Von Martens, 1872) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Stenopodidea) Obtained In The Laboratory, Joel W. Martin, Joseph W. Goy

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The first larval stage of Microprosthema semilaeve (von Martens, 1872) is described from ovigerous females collected off Sombrero Key, Florida Keys, USA, and Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, Caribbean. The larvae are characterized by a broad, triangular telson bearing posterolateral spines and an “anomuran seta,” a first maxilliped that differs markedly from the very similar (to each other) second and third maxillipeds, and the presence of the first pereiopod as a swimming appendage upon hatching, as is apparently true of all stenopodidean first stage larvae. Characters of the larvae are compared to those described from the Indian Ocean by Raje …

Stomatopoda (Crustacea: Hoplocarida) From The Shallow, Inshore Waters Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico (Apalachicola River, Florida To Port Aransas, Texas), John M. Foster, Brent P. Thoma, Richard W. Heard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Six species representing the order Stomatopoda are reported from the shallow, inshore waters (passes, bays, and estuaries) of the northern Gulf of Mexico limited to a depth of 10 m or less, and by the Apalachicola River (Florida) in the east and Port Aransas (Texas) in the west. With the exception of the “live bottom” gonodactylid, Neogonodactylus bredini (Manning), these predatory crustaceans usually inhabit burrows in mud, sand-mud, and sand substrata in coastal and shelf waters. The species treated in this paper are Neogonodactylus bredini (Manning), Lysiosquilla scabricauda (Lamarck), Bigelowina biminiensis (Bigelow), Coronis scolopendra Latreille, Squilla empusa Say, and Gibbesia …
