Determination Of The Nutritional Level Of Calcium And Phosphorus In Llamas (Lama Glama) In Two Seasons In The Condoriri Agricultural Experiment Center, Gustavo Adolfo León Titichoca Jan 2004

Determination Of The Nutritional Level Of Calcium And Phosphorus In Llamas (Lama Glama) In Two Seasons In The Condoriri Agricultural Experiment Center, Gustavo Adolfo León Titichoca

Theses and Dissertations

The concentrations of calcium and phosphorus were determined in 12 llamas from the Condoriri Agricultural Experiment Center (Oruro Technical University) of Oruro, Bolivia during two seasons (wet and dry) and at three ages (newborn, juvenile, and adult). Samples of flesh were taken from the arm, leg, back, rib, and neck. Pasture samples (grassland and prairie) were used to determine the rate of biting of each animal studied. The blood samples were taken by extracting blood from a jugular vein. The minerals (Ca and P) in the flesh are highest in the wet season, 113.78 mg/100 g. The newborns were found …

Northern Range Extensions For Caprella Scaura Templeton, 1836 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidae) On The Florida Gulf Coast And In South Carolina, John M. Foster, Richard W. Heard, David M. Knott Jan 2004

Northern Range Extensions For Caprella Scaura Templeton, 1836 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidae) On The Florida Gulf Coast And In South Carolina, John M. Foster, Richard W. Heard, David M. Knott

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Previous northwestern Atlantic records for the caprellid amphipod Caprella scaura Templeton, 1836 were confined to St. Croix (US Virgin Islands), St. Barthélemy, and Puerto Rico, islands bordering the northern Caribbean Sea. Based on recent collections, C. scaura is now reported from the Gulf of Mexico (St. Andrew Bay, Florida) and the US east coast (Charleston Harbor, South Carolina). These constitute the first records for this apparently non-indigenous species in waters of the continental eastern United States, establishing considerable northern range extensions for C. scaura in the northwest Atlantic.

Gonadal Development And Sexual Dimorphism Of Gobiomorus Dormitor From The Estuarine System Of Tecolutla, Veracruz, Mexico, Raquel Hernandez-Saavedra, Jose Antonio Martinez-Perez, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, Mark S. Peterson

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The bigmouth sleeper, Gobiomorus dormitor, is a benthic, euryhaline species, and is very abundant in river mouths, coastal lagoons, and sites away from marine influence from south Florida to Dutch Guyana. There are few studies of its life history, ecology, and abundance, particularly within Mexican waters. Nine trips to Tecolutla estuary, Veracruz, Mexico, were taken between October 1995 and May 1998 to estimate the gonadal development and sexual dimorphism of G. dormitor. A total of 94 individuals ranging from 15–260 mm SL and 0.05–181 g were captured. Seventy-two specimens were adults (60 females, 12 males) and 22 were …

Animation - A Study And Comparison Of Concepts And Software Issues, Alan Beesley

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This paper examines animation from several different views – historical through the modern computer generated. It covers a short history of animation with a detailed look at some of the early examples with an emphasis on the techniques and tricks used in their creation. It also looks at how computers have changed the animation industry and expanded it into other occupations such as architectural modeling. A comparison between traditional and computer animation processes is noted as well as a look at software, its components, usability, and more. Types of and processes for rendering are also described and compared.

Hepatic Disposition Of Cyclosporine A In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers, Reza Mehvar, Anjaneya Chimalakonda Jan 2004

Hepatic Disposition Of Cyclosporine A In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers, Reza Mehvar, Anjaneya Chimalakonda

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

PURPOSE. To develop an isolated perfused rat liver model to study the hepatic disposition of cyclosporine A (CyA) in both sexes.

METHODS. Livers were isolated from male (n = 6) and female (n = 7) rats and perfused with a physiological buffer in a single-pass manner. A bolus 1-mg dose of CyA was injected into the inlet catheter and periodical samples (0-15 min) were collected from the outlet perfusate. The concentrations of CyA in the outlet perfusate, collected bile (0-15 min), and liver tissue (at the end of perfusion) were quantitated by HPLC and subjected to statistical moment analysis. …

Ultrastructure And Function Of Respiratory Cilia In Critical Illness, Joanne Hosking Jan 2004

Ultrastructure And Function Of Respiratory Cilia In Critical Illness, Joanne Hosking

School of Biomedical Sciences Theses

Approximately one in eleven hospital patients suffer a nosocomial infection. Intensive care patients are at particular risk and nosocomial pneumonia especially is a problem in the intensive care unit (ICU). The mucociliary transport system is the major defence mechanism against such infection and whilst its efficiency has been shown to be decreased in ICU patients there are few reports in the literature describing the ultrastructure of the respiratory epithelium in this patient group. The principal aims of this study included an investigation of the ultrastructure of the respiratory ciliated epithelium in ICU patients, together with an assessment of the impact …

Evaluating The Return On Investment Of Faculty Development, Timothy W. Bothell, Tom Henderson Jan 2004

Evaluating The Return On Investment Of Faculty Development, Timothy W. Bothell, Tom Henderson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

How can the return on investment of faculty development be determined? One way to do this is through the application of a highly replicated and reported return on investment (ROI) process. This chapter reviews briefly an ROI process used by organizations throughout the world, a process that has been the basis for over 100 published studies and is the most validated and reported ROI process used for determining the monetary impact of learning. The process utilizes a five-level framework and a step-by-step ROI process model. These components are reviewed in this chapter and an example of return on investment based …

Optical Coherence Microscopy For The Evaluation Of A Tissue-Engineered Artificial Cornea, Elizabeth J.; Haskell, Richard C.; Petersen, Daniel C. Orwin, S Lee, C Raub, T Icenogle, M Arman, A Cho, R Lovec, A Malone, Bm Hoeling

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A transparent artificial cornea derived from biological material is the ultimate goal of corneal research. Attempts at artificial corneal constructs produced from synthetic polymers have proved unsuccessful due to lack of biocompatibility and ability to integrate into the tissue. We have designed a corneal model derived from collagenous biological materials that has several advantages: it has low antigenicity and therefore small chance of eliciting an immune reaction, it can be broken down by the body’s own cells and gradually replaced over time by natural materials, and it may contain signaling information for native cells, thereby inducing normal phenotype and behavior. …

Lives, Life-Years, And Willingness To Pay, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2004

Lives, Life-Years, And Willingness To Pay, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

In protecting safety, health, and the environment, government has increasingly relied on cost-benefit analysis. In undertaking cost-benefit analysis, the government has monetized risks of death through the idea of the value of a statistical life (VSL), currently assessed at about $6.1 million. But the government should rely instead on the value of a statistical life-year (VSLY), in a way that would likely result in lower benefits calculations for elderly people, and higher benefits calculations for children. The hard question involves not whether to undertake this shift, but how to monetize life-years, and here willingness to pay (WTP) is generally the …

The Unknown Past Of Lawrence V. Texas, Dale Carpenter

Articles

On the night of September 17, 1998, someone called the police to report that a man was going crazy with a gun inside a Houston apartment. When Harris County sheriff's deputies entered the apartment they found no person with a gun but did witness John Lawrence and Tyron Garner having anal sex. This violated the Texas Homosexual Conduct law,3 and the deputies hauled them off to jail for the night. Lawyers took the men's case to the Supreme Court and won a huge victory for gay rights.

The Sub-Commission's Initiative On Human Rights And Intellectual Property, David Weissbrodt, Kell Schoff Jan 2004

The Sub-Commission's Initiative On Human Rights And Intellectual Property, David Weissbrodt, Kell Schoff

Articles

In 2000 the United Nations Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights adopted a resolution raising concerns about the consistency of international intellectual property protections and human rights norms. This article summarises human rights norms relevant to intellectual property and the pertinent aspects of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, which overlap or potentially conflict. The article provides several examples of potential conflict and how they might be resolved. The article demonstrates that the Sub-Commission resolution helped to initiate a major international discussion and some action on the relationship between human rights and intellectual property.
