Utilization Of Juvenile Animals Studies To Determine The Human Effects And Risks Of Environmental Toxicants During Postnatal Developmental Stages, Robert L. Brent

The Selected Works of Robert Brent

Toxicology studies utilizing animals and in-vitro cellular or tissue preparations have been used to study the toxic effects and mechanism of action of drugs and chemicals and to determine the effective and safe dose of drugs in humans and the risk of toxicity from chemical exposures. Testing in animals could be improved if animal dosing using the mg/kg basis was abandoned and drugs and chemicals were administered to compare the effects of pharmacokinetically and toxicokinetically equivalent serum levels in the animal model and human. Since alert physicians or epidemiology studies, not animal studies have discovered most human teratogens and toxicities …

Traces, Patterns, Texture: In Search Of Aesthetic Teaching/Learning Encounters, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This inquiry reveals the crucial guidance of teachers toward surveying the capacity and needs of students, the formation of ideas, acting upon ideas, fostering connections, seeing potential, making judgments, and arranging conditions. Each aesthetic trace causes me to wonder how teachers learn to create experiences that foster student participation in the world aesthetically. The following considerations surface:

• Given the emphasis in schools on outcomes and results, how do we encourage teachers to focus on acts of mind instead of end products in their work with students?
• Given the orientations toward technical rationality, to fixed sequence, how do we …

Curriculum As Medium For Sense Making: Giving Expression To Teaching/Learning Aesthetically, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta Jan 2004

Curriculum As Medium For Sense Making: Giving Expression To Teaching/Learning Aesthetically, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

I think my painting experience holds tremendous possibilities for teaching/learning of all kinds. In reflecting on the significance of the art-making experience to me, I find that what I value is not so much art but the experience of making art: an experience that values my knowings, interpretations, and expressions; an experience that involves me in constructing meaning for myself; an experience that relies on dialogue and participation as a means to this sense making; an experience that has to be felt and lived through as a whole. In so doing, I find myself absorbed in relations that could never …

Diel Activity Patterns, Space Utilization, Seasonal Distribution And Population Structure Of The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis (Cuvier, 1817) In South Florida With Comments On Reproduction., Daniel P. Fahy

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis is the most common elasmobranch in the coastal waters of Southeast Florida. Despite their common occurrence the ecology of yellow stingrays remains poorly understood. In particular, yellow stingray daily movements, space utilization, seasonal distribution and population structure have not been described. This study was conducted to address the lack of knowledge of these fundamental life history parameters and to provide further information on the ecology of U. jamaicensis in coastal waters of Broward County, Florida.

The activity patterns and space utilization of U. jamaicensis were assessed by manual tracking with ultrasonic telemetry. Telemetry tracking of …

Expression Morphing Between Different Orientations, Tao Fu Jan 2004

Expression Morphing Between Different Orientations, Tao Fu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

How to generate new views based on given reference images has been an important and interesting topic in the area of image-based rendering. Two important algorithms that can be used are field morphing and view morphing. Field morphing, which is an algorithm of image morphing, generates new views based on two reference images which were taken at the same viewpoint. The most successful result of field morphing is morphing from one person's face to the other one's face. View morphing, which is an algorithm of view synthesis, generates in between views based on two reference views which were taken at …

Part I: Evaluation Of Russian Synthetic Compounds As A Potential Source Of New Drug Leads Agains Breast And Colon Cancer Part Ii: Isolation Of Beta-Amyrin Formate From Eucalyptus Viminalis Labill And Investigation Of Its Colon Cancer Activity, Mihaela Cohanoschi Jan 2004

Part I: Evaluation Of Russian Synthetic Compounds As A Potential Source Of New Drug Leads Agains Breast And Colon Cancer Part Ii: Isolation Of Beta-Amyrin Formate From Eucalyptus Viminalis Labill And Investigation Of Its Colon Cancer Activity, Mihaela Cohanoschi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although modern medicine made great steps toward curing most diseases considered deadliest, yet cancer remains one of the major public health problems. The first part of this thesis investigates a new source of selective compounds that are potential candidates against cancer. Fifteen Russian compounds were tested in order to establish their efficiency against two types of cancer: human breast SK-Br-3 and colorectal carcinoma HT-29. The bioassay results show that seven of the new synthetic Russian compounds can be considered new drug leads, based upon their low toxicity and efficacy in slowing the growth of human breast cancer and colon cancer …
