Quantitative Models Of The Rat Pulmonary Arterial Tree Morphometry Applied To Hypoxia-Induced Arterial Remodeling, Robert C. Molthen, Kelly L. Karau, Christopher A. Dawson
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Little is known about the constituent hemodynamic consequences of structural changes that occur in the pulmonary arteries during the onset and progression of pulmonary arterial remodeling. Many disease processes are known to be responsible for vascular remodeling that leads to pulmonary arterial hypertension, cor pulmonale, and death. Histology has been the primary tool for evaluating pulmonary remodeling, but it does not provide information on intact vascular structure or the vessel mechanical properties. This study is an extension of our previous work in which we developed an alternative imaging technique to evaluate pulmonary arterial structure. The lungs from Sprague-Dawley rats were …

Contractile Responses Of The Rat Gastrocnemius And Soleus Muscles To Isotonic Resistance Exercise, Kris M. Norenberg, Robert H. Fitts
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Male rats were divided into control and weight-trained (WT) groups. WT rats performed squattype exercises twice daily, 5 days/wk, for 14 wk. They averaged 36 lifts/day, with an average weight of 555 g. Muscle-to-body weight ratio (mg/g) of the soleus (Sol) was not different from control, but it increased 11 and 6% in the gastrocnemius (Gast) and plantaris, respectively (P < 0.05). The normalized twitch tension of the in situ Sol was elevated by 21%, whereas single-skinned type I fibers from the Sol showed an increased rate constant of tension redevelopment (Ktr) but no other contractile adaptations to WT. In contrast, the Gast type I fibers showed an increase (P < 0.05) in maximal velocity of shortening (25%), peak power (15%), Ktr (18%), and normalized tension (7%). The Ktr and normalized tension of the Gast type IIa fibers increased by …

Follicular Development And Maturation In Gilts Selected For An Index Of High Ovulation Rate And High Prenatal Survival, H.-W. Yen, J. J. Ford, D. R. Zimmerman, R. K. Johnson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Seventy-one 10th-generation gilts from White Line-1 (WL-1 = randomly selected control line) and White Line-2 (WL-2 = selected for an index of ovulation rate and prenatal survival rate) were used to compare the pattern of follicular development and atresia during the follicular phase of the estrous cycle. Gilts were treated with PGF2α on d 13 of the estrous cycle (d 0 of induced follicular development) to induce luteolysis and assigned randomly within line and sire for ovary recovery on d 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, and the day after estrus. Ovaries were evaluated for numbers of corpora albicantia and …

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population, U.S. Breeding Segment Fall 2004, James A. Dubovsky
Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population, U.S. Breeding Segment Fall 2004, James A. Dubovsky
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Observers counted 417 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the U.S. Breeding Segment of the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during fall of 2004, a count identical to that from comparable areas last year. The numbers of white birds and cygnets in the tri-state region were essentially unchanged from respective counts in 2003. The numbers of young produced in each of the 3 states in which the Tri-state Area Flocks nest were nearly the same as those of last year. The number of white birds increased slightly in Idaho, decreased slightly in Wyoming, and was unchanged in Montana compared …

Attractiveness Of Brown Rice Baits To Non-Target Birds In Harvested Corn And Soybean Fields, George M. Linz, Gregory A. Knutsen, H. Jeffrey Homan, William J. Bleier
Attractiveness Of Brown Rice Baits To Non-Target Birds In Harvested Corn And Soybean Fields, George M. Linz, Gregory A. Knutsen, H. Jeffrey Homan, William J. Bleier
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Brown rice is used as a bait-carrier for the avicide DRC-1339 (3-chloro-4-methyladhe) when baiting blackbirds (Icteridae). In March and April 1996 and 1997, we assessed non-target granivorous bird use of rice-baited plots placed in harvested corn and soybean fields in eastern South Dakota for 168 observation hours. In both years combined, we identified 10 and 14 granivorous species in corn and soybean fields, respectively. In 1996 (X = 0.2, SE = 0.04) and 1997 (X = 1.2, SE = 0.38), total numbers of granivores min-1 were similar between crops (P ≥ 0.322). In 1996, bird numbers …

Density Effects On Growth, Survival And Diet Of June Sucker (Chasmistes Liorus): A Component Allee Effect In An Endangered Species., David Barrett Gonzalez
Density Effects On Growth, Survival And Diet Of June Sucker (Chasmistes Liorus): A Component Allee Effect In An Endangered Species., David Barrett Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
Density-dependence is considered one of the most important regulators of population growth, and it has been documented across a wide variety of species. Typically, population growth rate and components thereof decline with increasing density (i.e., negative density-dependence); however, in species that exhibit high population densities and social behavior, positive density-dependence (i.e., Allee effect) may occur at low density. June sucker, a federally endangered lake sucker endemic to Utah Lake, Utah, USA, occurred historically at high density, and it exhibits coordinated feeding behavior. These characteristics indicate a potential for the existence of an Allee effect at current low population densities. To …

Characterization Of The Chicken Inward Rectifier K+ Channel Irk1/Kir2.1 Gene., Hideki Mutai, Lawrence C Kenyon, Emily Locke, Nami Kikuchi, John Carl Oberholtzer
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Inward rectifier potassium channels (IRK) contribute to the normal function of skeletal and cardiac muscle cells. The chick inward rectifier K+ channel cIRK1/Kir2.1 is expressed in skeletal muscle, heart, brain, but not in liver; a distribution similar but not identical to that of mouse Kir2.1. We set out to explore regulatory domains of the cIRK1 promoter that enhance or inhibit expression of the gene in different cell types. RESULTS: We cloned and characterized the 5'-flanking region of cIRK1. cIRK1 contains two exons with splice sites in the 5'-untranslated region, a structure similar to mouse and human orthologs. cIRK1 has …
Further Thoughts On Kanter And Ballard, Steve R. Johnson
Further Thoughts On Kanter And Ballard, Steve R. Johnson
Scholarly Publications
On December 7, 2004, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the consolidated Kanter and Ballard cases. The Tax Court had substantially upheld the IRS’s determinations of large deficiencies and fraud penalties against several taxpayers. The taxpayers argued in part that the Tax Court's application of its Rule 183 violated both due process and applicable statutes. I disagreed with those arguments then, and I continue to do so now. On appeal, the taxpayers' challenges to Rule 183 were rejected by the Fifth, Seventh, and Eleventh Circuits. The decisions of those circuits are sound and should be affirmed.
Both an …
The Revised Classification For Scarabaeoidea: What The Hell Is Going On?, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Mary Liz Jameson
The Revised Classification For Scarabaeoidea: What The Hell Is Going On?, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Mary Liz Jameson
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Considering the turmoil and vast changes in the classification of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea during the last 20 years, particularly in North America, we were asked to provide an update for the readers of Scarabs wherein we offer our perspectives. Much of what follows is extracted from our scarabaeoid introduction in American Beetles (Jameson and Ratcliffe 2002). By the time this overview is printed, there may have been more changes in the classification because of the rapidly accumulating evidence supporting new hypotheses.
These rapid changes are a result of intensified study of the family groups using both traditional morphological evidence combined …

Drosophila Rnase Z Processes Mitochondrial And Nuclear Pre-Trna 3′ Ends In Vivo, Edward B. Dubrovsky, Veronica A. Dubrovskaya, Louis Levinger, Steffen Schiffer, Anita Marchfelder
Dartmouth Scholarship
Although correct tRNA 3′ ends are crucial for protein biosynthesis, generation of mature tRNA 3′ ends in eukaryotes is poorly understood and has so far only been investigated in vitro. We report here for the first time that eukaryotic tRNA 3′ end maturation is catalysed by the endonuclease RNase Z in vivo. Silencing of the JhI‐1 gene (RNase Z homolog) in vivo with RNAi in Drosophila S2 cultured cells causes accumulation of nuclear and mitochondrial pre‐tRNAs, suggesting that JhI‐1 encodes both forms of the tRNA 3′ endonuclease RNase Z, and establishing its biological role in endonucleolytic tRNA 3′ …

Absorption, Distribution, And Excretion Of [14C]-3-Chloro-4 Methylaniline Hydrochloride In Two Species Of Birds Following A Single Oral Dose, David A. Goldade, John D. Tessari, John J. Johnston
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Ring-labeled [14C]-3-chloro-4-methylaniline hydrochloride (250 μg per bird) was delivered to 21 red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) and 21 dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) via oral gavage, and the distribution and excretion of radioactivity were determined at 15 and 30 min and 1, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h (n = 3 per time point). Direct measurement of radioactivity as well as measurement following combustion was accomplished using a liquid scintillation counter. Elimination from most tissues followed a two-compartment model, with very rapid elimination occurring between time 0 and 4 h and a much slower elimination …
