Contractile Responses Of The Rat Gastrocnemius And Soleus Muscles To Isotonic Resistance Exercise, Kris M. Norenberg, Robert H. Fitts
Contractile Responses Of The Rat Gastrocnemius And Soleus Muscles To Isotonic Resistance Exercise, Kris M. Norenberg, Robert H. Fitts
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Male rats were divided into control and weight-trained (WT) groups. WT rats performed squattype exercises twice daily, 5 days/wk, for 14 wk. They averaged 36 lifts/day, with an average weight of 555 g. Muscle-to-body weight ratio (mg/g) of the soleus (Sol) was not different from control, but it increased 11 and 6% in the gastrocnemius (Gast) and plantaris, respectively (P < 0.05). The normalized twitch tension of the in situ Sol was elevated by 21%, whereas single-skinned type I fibers from the Sol showed an increased rate constant of tension redevelopment (Ktr) but no other contractile adaptations to WT. In contrast, the Gast type I fibers showed an increase (P < 0.05) in maximal velocity of shortening (25%), peak power (15%), Ktr (18%), and normalized tension (7%). The Ktr and normalized tension of the Gast type IIa fibers increased by …

Finite Element Analysis Of Interaction Between Actin Cytoskeleton And Intracellular Fluid In Prechondrocytes And Chondrocytes Subjected To Compressive Loading, Sundar Viswanathan
Finite Element Analysis Of Interaction Between Actin Cytoskeleton And Intracellular Fluid In Prechondrocytes And Chondrocytes Subjected To Compressive Loading, Sundar Viswanathan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Prechondrocytes exhibit a change in their actin cytoskeletal arrangement when subjected to loading. This study looks at the implications of the altered solid-fluid interactions due to this change. A 2-D Finite element model of a cell was developed. A solid-fluid interaction solution procedure was validated and used to determine fluid flow/pressure in a cell when subject to deformation. These values were then used to calculate fluid flow induced stresses on individual actin fibers. The results suggest that prechondrocytes alter their cytoskeletal structure to reduce stresses as a result of fluid flow due to deformation of the cell.
Effectiveness Of Electrical Demand Reduction Strategies, Chandra Gopalakrishnan
Effectiveness Of Electrical Demand Reduction Strategies, Chandra Gopalakrishnan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A common notion in the industry is that energy is an overhead and not related directly to the product. Measures that reduce electric demand are usually considered in isolation and their effect on the other costs related to the product is ignored. This is especially true for multi-product operations where the demand for various products is not constant and it is hard to track the costs associated with each product. This research takes a software based approach to analyze how a demand reduction measure affects the carrying cost, stockout cost, labor cost, electric usage cost and electric demand cost. This …
Effects Of Herbivory By White -Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus Zimm.) On The Population Ecology And Conservation Biology Of American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L.), Mary Ann Furedi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) is a long-lived understory herb considered rare within its range. Harvesting pressures and habitat degradation/destruction are thought to be the primary causes of population decline although others factors such as browsing by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimm.) have not yet been explored. To understand the effects of deer browsing on natural ginseng populations, my research focused on four specific objectives. First, I investigated how plant characteristics and microsite conditions influence the susceptibility to being browsed. I found that apparency plays a role in influencing browse selection, such that large, reproductive plants in visible and accessible …

Why Faculty Use A Course Management System (Blackboard) To Supplement Their Teaching Of Traditional Undergraduate Courses, Lori Anne Swinney
Why Faculty Use A Course Management System (Blackboard) To Supplement Their Teaching Of Traditional Undergraduate Courses, Lori Anne Swinney
Theses and Dissertations
Use of course management systems (CMS) in higher education has risen dramatically since their development in the late 1990s. This qualitative study investigated the use of a course management system (CMS) by faculty teaching undergraduate, traditional courses in a Midwestern liberal arts university. The focus of the study was on the reasons faculty stated for their adoption of a course management system in their course. Three faculty members were interviewed over a three-month time period. The participants in this study were not mandated to use a CMS by their department or the institution. Initially faculty members were asked questions regarding …

Phosphorylation Of Skeletal Muscle Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase By Ampk Enhances Palmitoyl-Coa Inhibition, Dustin S. Rubink
Theses and Dissertations
Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) catalyzes the formation of malnoyl-CoA, which in turn controls the rate of fatty acid metabolism. ACC beta or 2 has been shown to be localized on the mitochondria in close proximity to carnintine palmitoyl transferase 1 (CPT-1), the enzyme responsible for the influx of acyl-CoA into the matrix where beta oxidation takes place. CPT-1 is inhibited by malonyl-CoA produced by ACC. It has been well documented that AMP activated kinase (AMPK) when activated phosphorylates and inactivates ACC. ACC is controlled allosterically by citrate, which activates, and by palmitoyl-COA, which inhibits. In this study, we asked the question, …

Who Wants A Buffalo? South Dakota's Fenced Herds And Experiments In Management, 1901–1952, David Nesheim
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
By 1890, the number of North American bison (Bison bison) in the United Sates was reduced to about 500 animals. At that time, a few private ranchers started small herds from remnant survivors of the hide trade. Fredrick Dupree saved nine calves on his ranch near the Moreau River in South Dakota.
Between 1901 and 1913, three fenced preserves were created in the state. James Philip, a Pierre rancher, purchased the Dupree herd in 1901. The state of South Dakota created Custer State Game Preserve in 1913. The Federal government, in concert with the American Bison Society, created the Wind …

Bergmann's Clines In Ectotherms: Illustrating A Life-History Perspective With Sceloporine Lizards, Michael J. Angilletta Jr., Peter H. Niewiarowski, Arthur E. Dunham, Adam D. Leache, Warren P. Porter
Biology Faculty Research
The generality and causes of Bergmann's rule have been debated vigorously in the last few years, but Bergmann's clines are rarely explained in the context of life-history theory. We used both traditional and phylogenetic comparative analyses to explore the causes of latitudinal and thermal clines in the body size of the eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus). The proximate mechanism for larger body sizes in colder environments is delayed maturation, which results in a greater fecundity but a lower survival to maturity. Life-history theory predicts that a higher survivorship of juveniles in colder environments can favor the evolution of a Bergmann's …

A Swarm Intelligence Based Approach To The Mine Detection Problem, Vignesh Munirajan
Theses
This research focuses on the application of swarm intelligence to the problem of mine detection. Swarm Intelligence concepts have captivated the interests of researchers mainly in collective robotics, optimization problems (traveling salesman problem (TSP), quadratic assignment problem, graph coloring etc.), and communication networks (routing) etc [1]. In the mine detection problem we are faced with sub problems such as searching for the mines over the minefield, defusing them effectively, and assuring that the field is clear of mines within the least possible time. In the problem, we assume that the mines can be diffused by the collective action of the …

An Intramolecular Association Between Two Domains Of The Protein Kinase Fused Is Necessary For Hedgehog Signaling, Manuel Ascano Jr., David J. Robbins
An Intramolecular Association Between Two Domains Of The Protein Kinase Fused Is Necessary For Hedgehog Signaling, Manuel Ascano Jr., David J. Robbins
Dartmouth Scholarship
The protein kinase Fused (Fu) is an integral member of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway. Although genetic studies demonstrate that Fu is required for the regulation of the Hh pathway, the mechanistic role that it plays remains largely unknown. Given our difficulty in developing an in vitro kinase assay for Fu, we reasoned that the catalytic activity of Fu might be highly regulated. Several mechanisms are known to regulate protein kinases, including self-association in either an intra- or an intermolecular fashion. Here, we provide evidence that Hh regulates Fu through intramolecular association between its kinase domain (ΔFu) and its carboxyl-terminal …

Diel Foraging Behavior Of American White Pelicans ()Pelecanus Erythrorhynchos) On Experimental Aquaculture Ponds , Scott J. Werner
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Videography and night vision equipment were used to observe the diurnal and nocturnal activities of American white pelicans (Pe1ecanus erythrorhynchos) (N= 6) foraging on three experimental (0.04 ha) channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) aquaculture ponds in March 2001. Captive pelicans spent most time foraging per hour from 1700 through 2300 h (CST). No foraging was observed from 0700 through 0800 h. Fish captures per hour were greatest from 1700 through 1900 h. On average, captive pelicans (N = 5) consumed 1.0 ± 0.2 kg of catfish per bird per day during the 10-d foraging …

Alligators As West Nile Virus Amplifiers, Kaci Klenk, Jamie Snow, Katrina Morgan, Richard Bowen, Michael Stephens, Falacia Foster, Paul Gordy, Susan Beckett, Nicholas Komar, Duane Gubler, Michael Bunning
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Recent evidence suggests that American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) may be capable of transmitting West Nile virus (WNV) to other alligators. We experimentally exposed 24 juvenile alligators to WNV parenterally or orally. All became infected, and all but three sustained viremia titers >5.0 log10 PFU/mL (a threshold considered infectious for Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes) for 1 to 8 days. Noninoculated tankmates also became infected. The viremia profiles and multiple routes of infection suggest alligators may play an important role in WNV transmission in areas with high population densities of juvenile alligators.

Lumbee Origins: The Weyanoke-Kearsey Connection, J. Cedric Woods
Southern Anthropologist
To determine the historic Virginia tribe or tribes from which the Lumbee may be descended, I have decided to search the records of North Carolina and Virginia and see where surnames linked to the Lumbee in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries appear. My goal is to see which, if any, have documented ties to specific Virginia Indian communities.

Sounds Of Survival: Language Loss, Retention, And Restructuring Among American Indian Peoples In The Southeast, Clare Dannenberg
Southern Anthropologist
This paper investigates indigenous language loss in the Southeastern United States, involving the Eastern Cherokee, Occaneechi, Chickahominy, Haliwa-Saponi, Nansemond, Pamunkey, Catawba, the Monacan tribes, and particularly considers the Lumbee. As will be evident, the resiliency of Native peoples is symbolically manifested in cases like the Lumbee, where ancestral languages have been lost or simply forgotten.

William & Mary Law Review
Copyright, it is commonly said, matters in society because it encourages the production of socially beneficial, culturally significant expressive content. Our focus on copyright's recent history, however, blinds us to the social information practices that have always existed. In this Article, we examine these social information practices, and query copyright's role within them. We posit a functional model of what is necessary for creative content to move from creator to user. These are the functions dealing with the creation, selection, production, dissemination, promotion, sale, and use of expressive content. We demonstrate how centralized commercial control of information content has been …

Childhood Experiences Of Appalachian Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence During Adulthood., Amy L. Reeves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent national surveys in the United States estimate one in five females will experience abuse by an intimate partner during her lifetime. Previous quantitative research linked childhood victimization to repeated victimization in adult relationships. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of childhood in eight female victims of intimate partner violence who were born and reared in southern Appalachia. Interviews were analyzed using a descriptive-interpretative phenomenological method, as described by Van Manen. The three essential themes from childhood were identified as: living 'as if' an orphan; surviving in chaos; and, manifesting a devalued self. These themes were congruent with findings …

Deception 101--Primer On Deception, Joseph W. Caddell Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author reviews the basic concepts related to "deception." Dr. Joseph Caddell defines terms, provides historical examples, and discusses problems associated with deception. He provides a general overview, a "primer" which is not directed at those who already possess a working knowledge of deception operations. Nevertheless, given the complex and everchanging nature of deception in the political-military environment, it may serve as a useful reminder of the basic assumptions and methods concerning the subject.
