Depositional Environments Comprising The Birch River Section (Middle Pennsylvanian), Powell Mountain, Nicholas County, West Virginia, Jeffrey R. Rutland May 2004

Depositional Environments Comprising The Birch River Section (Middle Pennsylvanian), Powell Mountain, Nicholas County, West Virginia, Jeffrey R. Rutland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A field analysis of Middle Pennsylvanian strata (Kanawhat Formation and Allegheny Formation) in central West Virginia was performed to test two depositional models, coastal plain and fluvial-deltaic. Sedimentary descriptions form the basis for two levels of interpretations, where the first goal is to interpret the depositional settings of individual architectural elements within the section. The second task was to place the compiled interpretations into the previously established regional stratigraphic framework. At Birch River, the Kanawha Formation is composed of both estuarine and alluvial facies. The estuarine facies include, estuary margin, estuarine channels, and estuarine lagoon. Alluvial facies make up the …

Evidence suggests that hyperproduction of reactive oxidants and inflammatory mediators plays a critical role in adverse pulmonary responses to silica or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The main objective of this study was to contribute to advancing the understanding of the role of AM's and type II (TII) cells in the induction of pulmonary inflammation and injury in response to silica and LPS, and improve our understanding of the interaction between AM's and TII cells which would occur in vivo. To reach this objective, three aims were put forth. (1) Determine the relative responsiveness of primary rat AM's, primary rat TII cells and …

Mechanisms Of Retroviral Reverse Transcription And Assembly, Sara Kirsten Rasmussen May 2004

Mechanisms Of Retroviral Reverse Transcription And Assembly, Sara Kirsten Rasmussen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The work described in these dissertation studies examines three aspects of retrovirus replication and dissects the uncovered phenomena to increase understanding of how retroviruses thrive in complex host environments. The first aspect of replication discussed is the mechanisms behind minus-strand DNA transfer, a crucial step of reverse transcription. We proved for the first time that non-viral sequences can be utilized to carry out this step of the replication process, and that the minus-strand DNA transfer step can be exploited to reconstitute a functional gene in the infected host cell. This finding serves as a proof-of-principle for a new class of …

The purpose of the study was to categorize each agent according to their learning style and to determine if relationships exist between learning style preferences and the agents' major program area, Extension …

Facies Analysis Of The Devonian Gordon Stray Sandstone In West Virginia, Patrick S. Mcbride May 2004

Facies Analysis Of The Devonian Gordon Stray Sandstone In West Virginia, Patrick S. Mcbride

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since its discovery in 1895, West Virginia's Jacksonburg-Stringtown field has had a primary production of 20 million barrels of oil. Based on 10 full-bore cores from Wetzel and Tyler Counties, the reservoir---the Gordon Stray Sandstone---is interpreted to be part of a barrier-island complex, comprising (from bottom to top) lower-shoreface, upper-shoreface, and foreshore sandstone. Tying core interpretations to 123 well logs across the field enables the various facies to be mapped. The major pay zone occurs stratigraphically within the middle of the shoreface facies, a medium-grained, well sorted sandstone. The barrier-island then prograded rapidly westward, laying down a thin sandstone. Mapping …

Breaking Boundaries, Juan Giraldo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Graphic design communication is in constant change. Everyday new technologies emerge and evolve, affecting the way we communicate and deliver messages. For this reason, graphic designers should be able to understand the basic principles of design and effectively apply them to any media. It is my intention with this thesis to analyze the way I work in the design process, my influences, and also, why I make specific decisions based on different media. To illustrate these concepts I will discuss the body of work presented in my thesis exhibition: Breaking Boundaries.

Neurology In The 21st Century: Contemporary State Of Diagnostics And Therapeutics, Saad Shafqat, Mohammad Wasay May 2004

Neurology In The 21st Century: Contemporary State Of Diagnostics And Therapeutics, Saad Shafqat, Mohammad Wasay

Department of Medicine

Although neurological disease has been recognized since antiquity, neurology as a systematic clinical discipline is less than 130 years old. Neurological practice has traditionally been constrained by the complexity of the human nervous system, which has been slow to yield its secrets. Over the last three decades, however, clinical neurology has been transformed in terms of both diagnostics and therapeutics and now marches in lockstep with the cutting edge of medicine. Efficacious treatments are now available for the majority of neurological diseases, including epilepsy, migraine, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and ischemic stroke. This neurological revolution has been enabled …

Simulation Of Drosophila Circadian Oscillations, Mutations, And Light Responses By A Model With Vri, Pdp-1, And Clk, Paul Smolen, Paul E. Hardin, Brian S. Lo, Douglas A. Baxter, John H. Byrne May 2004

Simulation Of Drosophila Circadian Oscillations, Mutations, And Light Responses By A Model With Vri, Pdp-1, And Clk, Paul Smolen, Paul E. Hardin, Brian S. Lo, Douglas A. Baxter, John H. Byrne

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A model of Drosophila circadian rhythm generation was developed to represent feedback loops based on transcriptional regulation of per, Clk (dclock), Pdp-1, and vri (vrille). The model postulates that histone acetylation kinetics make transcriptional activation a nonlinear function of [CLK]. Such a nonlinearity is essential to simulate robust circadian oscillations of transcription in our model and in previous models. Simulations suggest that two positive feedback loops involving Clk are not essential for oscillations, because oscillations of [PER] were preserved when Clk, vri, or Pdp-1 expression was fixed. However, eliminating positive feedback by fixing vri expression altered the oscillation period. Eliminating …

Processing And Optimization Of Natural Fiber Reinforced Composites Using Date Palm Fibers, Khalifa Musabbeh Suwaidan Hamad Al-Kaabi

Theses

During the last twenty years, ecological concerns have resulted in a renewed interest in natural materials. Composite materials usually depend on using man-made fibers as the reinforcing element. The possibility of using natural fibers instead of synthetic fibers is gaining acceptance among users. This work aims to investigate the possibility of extracting natural fibers from date palm trees to be used as reinforcement with polymeric materials. The objective was achieved by characterizing fibers through different chemical, physical and mechanical tests and using different treatment methods in order to modify the fiber properties. Date Palm Fibers (DPF) exhibit a cylindrical shape …

A Church Crisis: A Rhetorical Criticism Of Communication Arguments From Proponents Of Both Sides Of The Homosexual Movement In The Christian Church, Garland Brent Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The increased levels of homosexual discussion in mainstream media culture have aroused opinion diversity in both secular and religious circles. The case of Bishop Gene Robinson has brought the issue of homosexuality in the priesthood to the forefront. However, the main issue does not rest on the issue of homosexuality but rather on the inspiration, validity, and authority of the Bible as scripture. After the evaluation of two pieces of rhetoric, including an interview given by Bishop Gene Robinson on a local radio broadcast and a speech given by B. L. Mauser concerning homosexuality as sin, Kenneth Burke's pentad will …

Molecular Mechanism Of Vitamin D Action And Its Implications In Ovarian Cancer Prevention And Therapy, Feng Jiang May 2004

Molecular Mechanism Of Vitamin D Action And Its Implications In Ovarian Cancer Prevention And Therapy, Feng Jiang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25VD), the active form of vitamin D (VD), suppresses the growth of numerous human cancer cell lines by inhibiting cell cycle progression and inducing cell death. Genes that mediate each of these activities remain largely unidentified and there are no preclinical data for 1,25VD analogues in ovarian cancer (OCa). We hypothesize that 1,25VD and its analogues inhibit the development of OCa. In this study, we demonstrated, (a) 1,25VD causes cell cycle arrest at the G1/S and G2/M transition and induces apoptosis in OCa cells. (b) We also found that gadd45 is one of primary target genes for 1,25VD-mediated …

DMS3 is capable of mediating generalized transduction within and between P. aeruginosa strains PA14 and PAO1, thus providing a useful tool for the genetic analysis of P. aeruginosa.

Institutional Reckless Disregard For Truth In Public Defamation Actions Against The Press, Randall P. Bezanson Apr 2004

Institutional Reckless Disregard For Truth In Public Defamation Actions Against The Press, Randall P. Bezanson

ExpressO

Since its beginning, the actual malice test first announced in 1964 in New York Times v. Sullivan, has suffered from problems that are increasingly traceable to the changing face of journalism. Its demand that the mind of the reporter be proved "with convincing clarity" has adverse consequences for plaintiffs and news organizations alike. End runs around the subjective state of mind inquiry by plaintiffs have become more common. And the actual malice test's predictability, its capacity as a standard of liability to yield consistent and coherent results across a body of cases, remains a hollow promise. As Robert Sack famously …

Paper Session Ii-B - Strategies For Conducting Life Science Experiments Beyond Low Earth Orbit, Ronald L. Schaefer, Ingrid Rudolph-Angelich, Richard Mains, Darren Hughes, Lynn D. Harper, Gregory Leonard, Gregory K. Schmidt

Space Congress® Proceedings

Human exploration beyond low Earth orbit will require terrestrial life to survive and ultimately flourish in environments fundamentally different to those in which it has evolved. The effects of deep space and conditions on the surface of other planets must be studied to understand and reduce the risks to explorers, provide bioregenerative life support, and make full use of the broad research opportunities and scientific benefits offered by such unique environments. Though much is already known about biological adaptations to the space environment, key changes in terrestrial life may only be revealed over complete life cycles and across multiple generations …

Health Risk Assessment For The Introduction Of Eastern Wild Turkeys (Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris) Into Nova Scotia, A.S. Neimanis, F.A. Leighton

Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications

This health risk assessment evaluates potential health risks associated with a proposed introduction of wild turkeys to the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. The preferred source for the turkeys would be the Province of Ontario, but alternative sources include the northeastern United States from Minnesota eastward and Tennessee northward. This report assesses qualitatively the probability that health hazards would be created in Nova Scotia in association with the introduction of wild turkeys and the magnitude of harm that would result, and the probability that the introduced wild turkeys would encounter health hazards in Nova Scotia and the magnitude of the …
