Familial And Psychosocial Factors Affecting Adolescents' Academic Achievement, Isa Abdulnasir Ribadu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examined the influence of family cohesion, family adaptability, self-image, and locus-of-control on two measures of academic achievement among male and female adolescents. Using a self-administered questionnaire, data were gathered from a convenient sample of 230 students from five high schools in San Bernardino County in southern California. The survey included the Offer Self-image Questionnaire, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III, the Nowick-Strickland Locus-of-Control Scale, academic achievement measures, and demographic measures that assessed individual and family characteristics. Family cohesion, family adaptability, self-image, and locus-of-control were significant predictors of both measures of academic achievement. Also, family cohesion and family …

Regulation Of Ca2+-Activated K+ Channel: Changes With Development, Mike T. Lin Jun 2004

Regulation Of Ca2+-Activated K+ Channel: Changes With Development, Mike T. Lin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In ovine middle cerebral arteries, it has been shown that the [Ca2+]i change in response to iberiotoxin, a selective BK channel blocker, is significantly different between adult and fetal VSMCs. Our study of basilar VSMCs in whole-cell preparations showed that the total outward current density of fetal myocytes (57.9 ± 6.7 pA/pF) was greater than that of the adult (37.9 ±1.8 pA/pF). This increase in outward current density is contributed by an increase in BK channel current density in fetal myocytes. Excised, inside-out preparations showed that the unitary conductance, as well as the BK channel expression, did …

Mechanisms Of Oxidative Stress Resistance In Porphyromonas Gingivalis W83, Neal Antonio Johnson Jun 2004

Mechanisms Of Oxidative Stress Resistance In Porphyromonas Gingivalis W83, Neal Antonio Johnson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Porphyromonas gingivalisis one of the most important bacterial etiological agents involved in adult periodontitis. It possesses several virulence factors which aid in its persistence in the periodontal pocket leading to the development of some systemic illnesses. As an anaerobe, P. gingivalismust employ mechanisms to avoid oxidative stress generated by reactive oxygen species during phagocytosis, or the occasional exposure to air. Presently, only three proteins with antioxidant enzymatic function have been identified as playing a role in oxidative stress resistance in P. gingivalis. In this study, attention was focused on the alkyl hydroperoxidase subunit C (ahpC)and bacterioferritin comigratory …

Development Of Web Tools For Nlx Simulation Software, Daniel Chai Siriphongs Jun 2004

Development Of Web Tools For Nlx Simulation Software, Daniel Chai Siriphongs

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Valuable mathematical equations have developed within biology and other sciences (physics, chemistry, etc.) that model various processes, but the complexity of the equations are not easily understood by students, scientists, and those with limited knowledge of the subject area. Simulation software used to visually explain a model is normally proprietary to the specific model equations and cannot be easily adapted to new models by non-programmers. Simulation software needs to be modular and based upon web technologies so that the software can be run on multiple platforms. The NLX simulation software is a group of Java-based objects that can be combined …

The Anti-Proliferation Effects Of Lycopene On Breast Cancer Cells, Tixieanna Dissmore

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: The incidence and deaths from breast cancer represent the most cause of all cancer deaths among women. Lycopene, the carotenoid in tomatoes has been associated with decreasing risk of prostate, breast, and digestive tract cancers. Various mechanisms of lycopene action have been proposed, including antioxidant activity and pro-differentiation activities. Identifying changes in the expression of proteins modified by lycopene can provide information to study the modulating effects of lycopene carcinogenesis and tumorigenesis development.

Objective: The objective was to study the anti-proliferative effects of lycopene on MCF- 7 human breast cancer cells and to identify changes in protein expression patterns. …

Bobbitt's Window: Understanding Turning Points In Reflective Curriculum History And Unmuffling Reflective Voice In Adult Learning: Doubt And Identity, J. Warren Scheideman

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Franklin Bobbitt (1875–1956), the author of The Curriculum (1918) is known as the proponent of utilitarian curriculum and the “factory metaphor” of education. Herbert Kliebard (1986), however, identifies doubts about student tasking that enter into Bobbitt's perspective in 1926. John Wesley Null (1999) tracks these doubts in Bobbitt's career and publications into the 1940's. Null then asks, given that Bobbitt's doubts are now recognized: What difference is made by knowing Bobbitt had doubts about tasked curriculum, and looked at life experience as educational outcome? This is the question my dissertation attempts to answer by using hermeneutic metaphor and historical consciousness …

Benjamin, Agamben, And The Paradox Of Translation, Paolo Bartoloni Jun 2004

Benjamin, Agamben, And The Paradox Of Translation, Paolo Bartoloni

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Benjamin, Agamben, and the Paradox of Translation," Paolo Bartoloni offers a theoretical discourse on translation that goes beyond the traditional precincts of linguistics and literary theory as well as the disciplines of cultural studies and postcolonial theory. Bartoloni argues that more recently, the discourse on translation has begun to incorporate epistemological concerns, dealing not only with language but also with subjectivity and ethics. At the root of this theoretical articulation of translation are the essays "The Task of the Translator" ("Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers") by Walter Benjamin and other reflections on translation by Martin Heidegger, especially in …

Physiological Reactions Of Poultry To Heat Stress And Methods To Reduce Its Effects On Poultry Production, Narongsak Chaiyabutr Jun 2004

Physiological Reactions Of Poultry To Heat Stress And Methods To Reduce Its Effects On Poultry Production, Narongsak Chaiyabutr

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Thermal environment is regarded as the prime factor governing the production because, both the feed consumption and heat production are related closely to the thermal environment. Therefore, heat stress is caused by a combination of environmental and animal factors that result in reduced performance as the animal attempts to cool itself. In this review, the physiological reactions of bodily functions during heat exposure in poultry are described. Thermal panting, the marked response of poultry to heat stress, is compensatory behavior to permit a high rate of evaporative cooling from the respiratory tract. Cardiorespiratory responses to thermal stress show different patterns …

The Function Of The Oviduct In Relation To Sperm Transport And Capacitation In Swine, Paisan Tienthai Jun 2004

The Function Of The Oviduct In Relation To Sperm Transport And Capacitation In Swine, Paisan Tienthai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

In the pig, sperm transport is regulated, to facilitate normal fertilization of the ovulated oocytes, by the oviduct which contains a particular segment, the sperm reservoir. The main function of the sperm reservoir is to ensure that stored spermatozoa have maintained viability and fertilizing capacity. The process of sperm capacitation is delayed in the sperm reservoir, during the lengthy pre-ovulatory estrus by interactions between the spermatozoa, the oviduct epithelium and secretion products. Sperm capacitation seems to be facilitated by the tubal fluid in the upper segment of the oviduct releasing sperm from the reservoir in relation to the time of …

The Writer's Journey Into Solitude : Self-Discovery In Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Robinson Crusoe And Friday, Rabia Abdul Salim Madhi Jun 2004

The Writer's Journey Into Solitude : Self-Discovery In Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Robinson Crusoe And Friday, Rabia Abdul Salim Madhi

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The idea of physical solitude often implies metaphysical solitude, and it is this spiritual state of detachment or self-enclosure that usually arouses the widest range of moral responses. Physical solitude is a metaphorical focus for an attitude that relates to self and society. In my thesis, however, I am primarily interested in the concept of solitude as a vehicle facilitating a journey of inward exploration into the mystifying labyrinth of the self in search of truth. In this sense, solitude becomes a condition enabling consciousness to achieve spiritual insight and truth with respect to the nature of self and world.

The presence of an Anaerobiospirillum sp. was demonstrated on the basis of ultrastructural morphology of spiral bacteria associated with intestinal lesions and PCR amplification of a genus-specific 16S rRNA gene …

Network Consequences Due To Oligopolists And Oligopsonists In The Hog Industry, Pollution From Hog Production, And The Failure To Regulate Ecological Criteria, F. Gregory Hayden Jun 2004

Network Consequences Due To Oligopolists And Oligopsonists In The Hog Industry, Pollution From Hog Production, And The Failure To Regulate Ecological Criteria, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

Humans have been in a symbiotic relationship with hogs since the time humans became a species. That relationship evolved into a set of transactional (as defined by instrumentalists) processes beginning with the hunter-gatherer tribes. The network of relationships has continued to become more numerous, intense, and complex. Hogs have served in social systems with humans as societal symbols for prowess for numerous groups (with wild boars, for example, on coats of arms in Europe), as religious symbols (both positive and negative), as a source of human disease in the hog-chicken-human cycle for generating flu in Asia, and, more recently, as …

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension Of The Newborn, Pmc Nair Jun 2004

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension Of The Newborn, Pmc Nair

Saudi Medical Journal

This article attempts to define a complicated, yet not rare disease of the neonate, which presents with extreme hypoxemia due to increased pulmonary vascular resistance, resulting in diversion of the pulmonary venous blood through persistent fetal channels, namely ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale. Pathophysiology, diagnostic approach and the various modalities of management are analyzed. Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn is multi-factorial, which is reflected in the management as well. These babies are extremely labile to hypoxia and should be stabilized with minimum handling. One hundred percent oxygen and ventilation are the mainstay of treatment. The role of hyperventilation, alkalinization, …

Efficacy And Safety Of Sevelamer. Comparison With Calcium Carbonate In The Treatment Of Hyperphosphatemia In Hemodialysis Patients, Faisal A. Shaheen, Nabeela M. Akeel, Laila S. Badawi, Muhammad Z. Souqiyyeh

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Current phosphate binders used in hemodialysis patients include calcium-based binders that result in frequent hypercalcemia. The use of a calcium- and aluminum-free phosphate-binding polymer in hemodialysis (sevelamer) disclosed efficacy in the short and long-term studies. However, due to race differences we performed a short-term study on the Saudi hemodialysis patients and compared sevelamer with a standard calcium-based phosphate binder. METHODS: An open-label, randomized, cross-over study was performed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of sevelamer hydrochloride in controlling hyperphosphatemia in hemodialysis patients. After a 2-week phosphate binder washout period, stable hemodialysis patients were given either sevelamer or calcium carbonate, …

An Interpretive Investigation Into Motivations For Outgroup Activism, Catherine Borshuk

The Qualitative Report

A qualitative study was conducted to explore the motivations of individuals, who advocate politically for members of social outgroups. Long interviews with social activists focused on self-ascribed motivations for activism, relationship with the outgroup, and the costs and benefits associated with being an outgroup activist. A thematic analysis revealed that feelings of social responsibility were shared by the activists, who were interviewed. Further, some activists attributed their behavior to their personal relationships, while others believed they had a psychological predisposition to engage in social justice. Experiences of personal marginality were also highlighted as a key contributor to social justice efforts. …

Eating Ethnicity: Examining 18th Century French Colonial Identity Through Selective Consumption Of Animal Resources In The North American Interior, Rory J. Becker Jun 2004

Eating Ethnicity: Examining 18th Century French Colonial Identity Through Selective Consumption Of Animal Resources In The North American Interior, Rory J. Becker

Masters Theses

Cultural identities can be created and maintained through daily practice and food consum.ption is one such practice. People need food in order to survive, but the types of food they eat are largely determined by the interaction of culture and their environment. By approaching the topic of subsistence practices as being culturally constituted, the study of foodways provides an avenue to examine issues of cultural identity through selective consumption. Eating certain foods to the exclusion of others is one method for establishing social distance between peoples and is simultaneously a reflection of this relationship and the types of interactions that …
