Spring Field Report, March-May 2004, W. Ross Silcock
Spring Field Report, March-May 2004, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
This was a fairly typical spring with wide variations in temperature, although severe storms May 22 and 24 caused considerable damage to property and presumably nesting birds; dead robins and their blown-down nests were ubiquitous.
There continues to be an accumulation of observations indicative of earlier arrival of some species as well as possibly related range expansion northward of others (see species accounts for details). Notably early were most of the swallow species, Long-billed Curlew, and Bobolink. Northward range expansion seems to be occurring with Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Hooded Warbler, and Summer Tanager. Numbers of Piping Plovers and Snowy Plovers at …

Science-Based Organic Farming: A Resource For Educators, Charles A. Francis, Mindi Schneider, Brad Kindler
Science-Based Organic Farming: A Resource For Educators, Charles A. Francis, Mindi Schneider, Brad Kindler
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Organic farming is an important and growing part of the United States food system. The organic sector has grown by at least 20% per year for the past two decades, and currently shows no indication of slowing in this growth. There is increasing consumer concern about where and how food is produced, and people want to be assured access to safe and healthy food products. Interest and concern about food security, and discussion about the merits of a local food system as compared to the vulnerable globalized marketplace are also becoming increasingly important. In Nebraska we have only limited local …
Nebraska’S Water: Perceptions And Priorities, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell
Nebraska’S Water: Perceptions And Priorities, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Water has always been an important resource to rural Nebraska. This resource has become more scarce during the last few years amid a continuing drought throughout many counties of the state. Do rural Nebraskans feel the drought is over in their area? What priority do they place on various uses of water? Do they feel the quality or quantity of their household water supply has changed during the past ten years? If so, what has affected it?
This report details 2,915 responses to the 2004 Nebraska Rural Poll, the ninth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked …
Fairness And Welfare From A Comparative Law Perspective, Horacio Spector
Fairness And Welfare From A Comparative Law Perspective, Horacio Spector
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This Article discusses the relative value of law and economics and moral philosophy to explain private law in both common law and civil law jurisdictions. It argues that the recent philosophical paradigm, which revolves around the ideas of fairness and autonomy, is intellectually continuous with the School of Rationalist Natural Law. Though this School has been directly influential on the development of civilian private law, its ascendancy on common law cannot be documented. Paradoxically, recent philosophical explanations of private law bear on common law, while legal philosophers in civil law jurisdictions still follow Kelsen's research agenda, which focuses on the …
State Employers Are Not Sovereign: By Analogy, Transfer The Market Participant Exception To The Dormant Commerce Clause To States As Employers, Lara Gardner
Chicago-Kent Law Review
States should be treated as market participants and not be given sovereign immunity under the Eleventh Amendment when they are acting as private employers. Through an expansive reading of the Eleventh Amendment, the Supreme Court has restricted the right of state employees to sue under federal statutes intended to protect employees when the state is the employer and claims sovereign immunity. Under the market participant exception to the dormant Commerce Clause, if a state is acting as a market participant, rather than as a market regulator, it is no longer bound by the restraints of the Commerce Clause. The reasons …
Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli
Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
The Great Salt Lake is bordered to the south and east by a growing metropolitan area that contributes high nutrients to Farmington Bay. This large bay is eutrophic, and there is concern that continued increases in effluents from the Salt Lake City area could extend to impact the much larger, and currently less productive, Gilbert Bay. This study focused on determining how nutrient supplies might limit, and therefore control, algal populations in Farmington Bay and Gilbert Bay at different salinities. We tested both short and long-term responses of algal growth using laboratory nutrient addition bioassays in the summer and fall …

Patrice Emery Lumumba : Entre Metaphore Et Metonymie, Justin K. Bisanswa
Patrice Emery Lumumba : Entre Metaphore Et Metonymie, Justin K. Bisanswa
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The purpose of this text is to analyze the historiography devoted to Patrice Lumumba and the use of rhetoric that launched him into legend. The metaphor characterizes Lumumba in his journey towards death and the alienation of identity, rendering concrete a kind of degradation, of the animated and the unanimated. Further, the metaphor breaks down into a string of fragments, or of metonymical qualities. Lumumba's struggle for justice, equality, purity, truth, and the ideal translates the drama of which he is a victim into an extreme search for the ideal. This drama expresses itself by a notable use of the …

Time-Inconsistency And Welfare Program Participation: Evidence From The Nlsy, Hanming Fang, Dan Silverman
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We empirically implement a dynamic structural model of labor supply and welfare program participation for agents with potentially time-inconsistent preferences. Using panel data on the choices of single women with children from the NLSY 1979, we provide estimates of the degree of time-inconsistency, and of its influence on the welfare take-up decision. With these estimates, we conduct counterfactual experiments to quantify the utility loss stemming from the inability to commit to future decisions, and the potential utility gains from commitment mechanisms such as welfare time limits and work requirements.

An Integrated Analysis Of Pre-Hispanic Mortuary Practices: A Middle Sicán Case Study, Izumi Shimada, Ken-Ichi Shinoda, Julie Farnum, Robert Corruccini, Hirokatsu Watanabe

Recent debate has raised serious questions about the viability of the social and ideological reconstruction of prehistoric culture on the basis of mortuary analysis. In recent years bioarchaeology has gained considerable prominence, underscoring the fact that death, burials, and associated mortuary practices are multifaceted phenomena shaped by biological, social, ideological, and taphonomic factors. Few studies attempting social reconstruction through mortuary analysis, including those of a bioarchaeological character, have adequately addressed this multidimensionality. This study shows that social, ideological, and bioarchaeological reconstruction can be productively pursued through tight integration of a multitude of approaches and perspectives set within a long‐term regional …
Heritability Of Nectar Traits: Why Do We Know So Little?, Randall J. Mitchell
Heritability Of Nectar Traits: Why Do We Know So Little?, Randall J. Mitchell
Biology Faculty Research
Although floral and extrafloral nectar traits are important for plant reproduction and defense, we know little about their genetic basis. Only a handful of studies have quantified heritable variation for nectar traits, primarily in controlled environments that minimize environmental variation. Most such studies have reported strong genetic influences, with heritabilities often >0.35. However, because nectar traits are often very responsive to environmental variation, even substantial amounts of genetic variation may be swamped out in the, field. Environmental variation deserves to be studied in its own right, including exploration of genotype X environment interaction for nectar traits . Most genetic studies of …

Sperm Cryopreservation Of Green Swordtail Xiphophorus Helleri, A Fish With Internal Fertilization, Changjiang Huang, Qiaoxiang Dong, Ronald B. Walter, Terrence R. Tiersch
Faculty Publications
Sperm cryopreservation for fishes with internal fertilization is essentially unexplored although many species of these fishes are valuable biomedical research models. To explore methods for sperm cryopreservation within the live-bearing genus Xiphophorus, this study used X. helleri to evaluate the effects of cryoprotectant, osmotic pressure, cooling rate, equilibration time, and sperm-to-extender ratio. Sperm motility and survival duration after thawing showed significant differences among different cryoprotectants with the highest motility at 10min after thawing obtained with 14% glycerol. With subsequent use of 14% glycerol as the cryoprotectant, the highest motility after thawing was observed with Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) at …

Athletic Amenorrhea: Prevalence And Awareness Among Female Athletes At Western Michigan University, Michele R. Chupurdia
Athletic Amenorrhea: Prevalence And Awareness Among Female Athletes At Western Michigan University, Michele R. Chupurdia
Masters Theses
Women who participate in competitive sports are under enormous pressure to maintain an extremely low body weight through diet and exercise. While exercise is viewed as widely beneficial to women of all ages, the pressure to succeed in sports by achieving or maintaining an unrealistically low body weight through food restriction and high intensity training may lead some women to develop eating disorders, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis.
The research conducted for this thesis and presented here investigates female college athletes (18-24 years) from Western Michigan University, a Division I school, who are undergoing strenuous training. The goal of this study is …

This report contains the results of the 2004 SDSU South Dakota Farm Real Estate Market Survey, the 14th annual SDSU survey developed to estimate agricultural land values and cash rental rates by land use in different regions of South Dakota.
Corn-Based Food Production In South Dakota: A Preliminary Feasibility Study, T. Hansen, E. Van Der Sluis
Corn-Based Food Production In South Dakota: A Preliminary Feasibility Study, T. Hansen, E. Van Der Sluis
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Agriculture is evolving from an industry based on producing commodities to one focused on producing and marketing intermediate and finished products. It has become increasingly important to conduct thorough market analyses to identify potentially profitable value added ventures. This preliminary feasibility study is one component of a multi-disciplinary research effort assessing the market potential of specialty corn products produced in South Dakota.
This preliminary feasibility study was based on three objectives:
1. define the product market for white and yellow corn flour,
2. identify underserved geographic locations and demographic groups in the U.S., and
3. assess the growth potential of …
