An Investigation Of Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia After Isometric And Cardiovascular Exercise, Daniel G. Drury, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Robin J. Shannon, James L. Miller

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Exercise-induced hypoalgesia is a well-established phenomenon in the literature. The underlying mechanisms responsible for this augmentation of pain perception are not completely understood. The specific mode and intensity of exercise that creates hypoalgesia remains equivocal. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify if any differences existed in the exercise-induced hypoalgesia of isometric gripping exercise (IGE) and treadmill exercise (TE). A repeated measures design was used to determine the differences in pain threshold between acute exposure to IGE and TE. Twelve healthy male volunteers served as our subjects. Subjects were tested on three different days under three different conditions …

The Roles Of Pancreatic Beta Cell Antioxidants In Islet Transplantation And Type 1 Diabetes., Xiaoyan Li Aug 2004

The Roles Of Pancreatic Beta Cell Antioxidants In Islet Transplantation And Type 1 Diabetes., Xiaoyan Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pancreatic beta cells are extremely vulnerable to destruction by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). In type 1 diabetes and islet transplantation ROS are thought to be involved in the loss of beta cells. To test the role of antioxidant in islet transplantation. In our lab we have determined that transgenic overexpression of the antioxidant protein metallothionein (MT) in pancreatic beta cells provides broad resistance to oxidative stress by scavenging most kinds of ROS. A direct test of hypoxia/reperfusion sensitivity was shown that MT markedly reduced ROS production and improved islet cell survival. Furthermore, in both syngeneic transplantation and allotransplantation, MT islets …

Beguiling Beginnings And Dialectical Salvaging : The Presidential Inaugural Speech And African-American Leaders' Speeches., Jacqueline Elaine Brown Aug 2004

Beguiling Beginnings And Dialectical Salvaging : The Presidential Inaugural Speech And African-American Leaders' Speeches., Jacqueline Elaine Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how presidential inaugural speeches reflect the overarching mindset of the government, and how, in the postmodern era, this mindset manifests the same sort of African American erasure that has existed since Middle Passage. In addition, I explore the rhetorical engagement black leaders use to respond to, prevent, or to circumvent this erasure. This dissertation examines presidential inaugural speeches, during the Civil Rights and Black Power eras, from the Kennedy administration to President Lyndon Baines Johnson, to prove that, most times, this type of speech is little more than epideictic formality in regards to black interests, and, perhaps, …

Il-5 Links Adaptive And Natural Immunity In Reducing Atherosclerotic Disease, Alan Daugherty, Debra L. Rateri, Victoria L. King

Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Faculty Publications

Oxidized LDL induces changes in several facets of the immune system, although the relationships between these facets and their contributions to atherogenesis have yet to be fully elucidated. A report in this issue of the JCI provides a novel demonstration of the adaptive immune system influencing the production of natural antibodies. The results demonstrate that injection of malondialdehyde-modified LDL promotes a Th2 response that in turn increases the titers of the natural antibody T15/EO6, which recognizes the oxidized phospholipid POVPC. Atherosclerotic lesion size in LDL receptor–deficient mice is reduced as a consequence of the increase in natural antibody titers, and …

Lichens, Sun, And Fire: A Search For An Embiid-Environment Connection In Australia (Order Embiidina: Australembiidae And Notoligotomidae), Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Edward Rooks

Biology

This investigation is the first to quantify the degree of habitat specialization for any species within the little-known order Embiidina. The lichen and plant communities found in the habitats of two sympatric species, one living on lichens encrusted on granite and another feeding in leaf litter, were characterized using a process of ordination and cluster analysis. Differences among 40 samples and their relationships to environmental factors were probed statistically using Spearman’s coefficient of rank correlations generated by comparing rank similarity matrices of the census sites. The lichen eater, Notoligotoma hardyi (Friederichs), was more abundant in areas with strong southern exposures …

Ant (Formicidae) Diversity, Species Richness, And Abundance In Response To Different Food Sources, August 2004, Sarah A. Wyatt

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

More than 500 species of ants (family Formicidae: order Hymenoptera) have been found in Costa Rica (Gauld & Hanson 2000), and 46 of the 80 genera found in Costa Rica are known to live in the Monteverde area (Longino 2000). Some species of ants are known to exhibit food preferences for or against sugar and/or specific prey taxa (Dejean et al. 1999). The purpose of this study was to determine if species richness and diversity change in response to varying bait in traps. One hundred and twenty traps containing one of 6 kinds of bait (crustaceans, tuna, honey, peanut butter, …

Effect Of Ficus Tuerckheimii Diameter, Host Tree Presence, Habitat And Orientation On Epiphyte Diversity And Abundance, August 2004, Christina Tierno

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Ficus tuerckheimii, a species of strangler fig found in the cloud forests of Monteverde, is a keystone species for a multitude of animals as well as epiphytic plants. In the study, epiphyte richness on Ficus tuerckheimii was analyzed in order to determine if epiphyte species richness was related to elevation, circumference, hollowness, location, percent of area covered by epiphytes and compass point orientation. Thirty Ficus tuerckheimii were studied in pasture and forest areas between 1400-1500 m elevations. A significant relationship was found between epiphyte species richness in forest habitats versus open (Mann Whitney U=28, P=.0083). Significance was also found between …

Examinations of both population genetic structure and the processes that lead to such structure in crocodilians have been initiated in several species in response to a call by the IUCN Crocodile Specialist Group. A recent study used microsatellite markers to characterize Morelet's crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) populations in north-central Belize and presented evidence for isolation by distance. To further investigate this hypothesis, we sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial control region for representative animals after including samples from additional locales in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. While there is limited evidence of subdivision involving other locales, we found that most of the …

Paternity And Relatedness Of American Black Bears Recolonizing A Desert Montane Island, Dave P. Onorato, Eric C. Hellgren, Ronald A. Van Den Bussche, J. Raymond Skiles, Jr.

Publications

American black bears (Ursus americanus (Pallas, 1780)) are characterized by female philopatry and malebiased dispersal, with predictable consequences for genetic structure of populations. We studied a recolonizing population of black bears on a desert montane island to test genetic-based predictions of bear social behavior. We assessed genetic paternity and relatedness among bears within Big Bend National Park, Texas, from 1998 to 2001 via maternally and biparentally inherited markers and field observations. Data from seven microsatellite loci permitted us to assign paternity for 7 of 12 cubs, and multiple paternity was revealed in one litter. Levels of relatedness in the …

Relative Foraging Value To Lesser Scaup Ducks Of Native And Exotic Clams From San Francisco Bay, Samantha E. Richman, James R. Lovvorn Aug 2004

Relative Foraging Value To Lesser Scaup Ducks Of Native And Exotic Clams From San Francisco Bay, Samantha E. Richman, James R. Lovvorn

Publications

Invasions of exotic invertebrates have greatly altered many aquatic communities, but impacts on the foraging energetics of predators seldom have been assessed. In San Francisco Bay, California (USA), a major community change occurred with introduction of the Asian clam (Potamocorbula amurensis) in 1986. This species now greatly outnumbers the previous clam prey of a variety of sharks, rays, sturgeon, flatfish, and crabs, as well as several diving duck species for which the bay is the most important wintering area on the U.S. Pacific Coast. P. amurensis also accumulates much higher levels of some contaminants than the formerly dominant …

The Life-Long Diminution Of Anxiety Response As A Consequence Of Reproductive Experience, Ilan M. Mcnamara Aug 2004

The Life-Long Diminution Of Anxiety Response As A Consequence Of Reproductive Experience, Ilan M. Mcnamara

Master's Theses

Reproductive experience (RE), associated with hormonal fluctuations and enriching environmental stimuli, enhances spatial memory and blunts responses to stress/anxiety. Whereas stress reductions occur during lactation, the persistence of the RE-anxiolytic effects is unclear; and little research has focused on the HP A axis, amygdala, and other anxietyrelated areas. Using an elevated plus maze (EPM), we examined anxiety in nulliparous (NP), primiparous (PP), and multiparous (MP) females (zero, one, or two litters, respectively) at 6, 10, 14, 18, and 22 months of age. Brains were subsequently analyzed for neurodegeneration in dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). RE significantly dampened anxiety (defined by time …

Identification Of Sarv (Sa2062), A New Transcriptional Regulator, Is Repressed By Sara And Mgra (Sa0641) And Involved In The Regulation Of Autolysis In Staphylococcus Aureus, Adhar C. Manna, Susham S. Ingavale, Marybeth Maloney, Willem Van Wamel, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

The expression of genes involved in the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus is known to be controlled by global regulatory loci, including agr, sarA, sae, arlRS, lytSR, and sarA-like genes. Here we described a novel transcriptional regulator called sarV of the SarA protein family. The transcription of sarV is low or undetectable under in vitro conditions but is significantly augmented in sarA and mgrA (norR or rat) (SA0641) mutants. The sarA and mgrA genes act as repressors of sarV expression, as confirmed by transcriptional fusion and Northern analysis data. Purified SarA and MgrA proteins bound specifically to separate regions of the …

Local And Regional Impairment Of Fish Assemblages In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Jason Gregory Freund Aug 2004

Local And Regional Impairment Of Fish Assemblages In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Jason Gregory Freund

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I used the Cheat River watershed, West Virginia, as a model system to examine the regional impacts of extensive localized stream impairment. Acid mine drainage (AMD) in the Cheat River watershed provided a unique opportunity to test the hypothesis that regional biological condition can be impacted through multiple local sources of degradation. Acid mine drainage is the result of the interaction among pyrite-rich coal, oxygen, and water. This interaction produces a solution that is generally low in pH and buffering capacity and high in heavy metals and sulfate and is toxic to aquatic life. Acid mine drainage also has the …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The present study, using RAPD analysis, was undertaken to characterize genetic variation in domesticated cowpea and its wild progenitor, as well as their relationships. The materials used consisted of 26 domesticated accessions, including accessions from each of the five cultivar-group, and 30 wild/weedy accessions, including accessions from West, East and southern Africa. A total of 28 primers generated 202 RAPD bands. One hundred and eight bands were polymorphic among the domesticated compared to 181 among wild/weedy cowpea accessions. Wild accessions were more diverse in East Africa, which is the likely area of origin of V. unguiculata var. spontanea. Var. spontanea …
