Fundamentals Of The Prescription Drug Market, Christie Provost Peters
Fundamentals Of The Prescription Drug Market, Christie Provost Peters
National Health Policy Forum
This background paper is a primer on the prescription drug market. It provides information on the fundamentals of the pharmaceutical industry and various marketplace stakeholders, including manufacturers, retailers, consumers, regulators, researchers, and purchasers. This paper also examines the various ways the federal government interacts with the pharmaceutical market. Due to the breadth of material addressed, some complex issues and relationships are presented in broad conceptual terms without extensive technical detail.
Building A Model Of Campus Diversity: An Organization-As-The-Individual Based Approach, Ian Spencer Ray
Building A Model Of Campus Diversity: An Organization-As-The-Individual Based Approach, Ian Spencer Ray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diversity is a vital concept when engaging with modern social science research and among higher education practitioners. Despite the pervasive discourse surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, quantification of diversity remains a challenge across the social sciences. This study proposes a new conceptual framework, applies the framework to the quantification of diversity and measurement of its impacts. Further, this study demonstrates the robustness of the new conceptual framework alongside the positive impacts of diversity on institutional outcomes.
The Organization-As-The-Individual (OATI) framework arises from an integration of the social and biological sciences. The framework argues that humans, as biological organisms, …

Development And Assessment Of An Innovative Video To Introduce Concepts Of Adherence In Soweto, South Africa, Ilene Wong
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
ISSUES: The widening availability of antiretroviral therapy but dearth of medication taking experience among rural South Africans has raised concerns about adequate adherence to these medications. Interventions to improve adherence have been limited in development and evaluation and are often not culturally appropriate to patients in resource poor settings. It is hypothesized that a culturally-sensitive audio-visual patient education program may be of significant use in increasing patient understanding of concepts of resistance and medication taking skills, particularly in areas with low literacy rates. METHODS: After focus groups with health care providers and HIV-positive adherence counselors, a 15 minute educational video …
Tick-Tock: Preparing For The Next Influenza Pandemic, Eileen Salinsky
Tick-Tock: Preparing For The Next Influenza Pandemic, Eileen Salinsky
National Health Policy Forum
This paper describes the nature of pandemic influenza and highlights key challenges for responding to this disease threat. It explains how an influenza pandemic would differ from annual influenza outbreaks and examines how a pandemic virus could emerge. It also explores important issues involved in pandemic preparedness capabilities, including disease surveillance, vaccine production and distribution, antiviral stockpiling, health care system readiness, and public health containment measures. The national pandemic preparedness plan is briefly reviewed, and unresolved policy issues related to the plan’s implementation are identified.

Transgenic Animal And Methods, Lars Nilsson, Huntington Potter, Gary W. Arendash
USF Patents
A transgenic animal, preferably a mouse, that expresses human antichymotrypsin (ACT) in brain tissues is provided, together with animal tissue-derived cell lines and progeny animals of said transgenic animal. Progeny are obtained by mating the transgeny animal with select animal strains used as models of Alzheimer's disease, related neurological disorders, or amyloidogenic diseases. Methods utilizing the parent and progeny animals and cells derived therefrom are disclosed for testing compounds for use as anti-inflammatory drugs, inhibitors of amyloidogenesis, and/or inhibitors of tau protein pathology associated with Alzheimer's disease, in the treatment of a variety of neurological diseases.

Binding Between The Niemann–Pick C1 Protein And A Photoactivatable Cholesterol Analog Requires A Functional Sterol-Sensing Domain, Nobutaka Ohgami, Dennis C. Ko, Matthew Thomas, Matthew P. Scott, Catherine C. Y. Chang, Ta-Yuan Chang
Dartmouth Scholarship
Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) 1 protein plays important roles in moving cholesterol and other lipids out of late endosomes by means of vesicular trafficking, but it is not known whether NPC1 directly interacts with cholesterol. We performed photoaffinity labeling of intact cells expressing fluorescent protein (FP)-tagged NPC1 by using [(3)H]7,7-azocholestanol ([(3)H]AC). After immunoprecipitation, (3)H-labeled NPC1-GFP appeared as a single band. Including excess unlabeled sterol to the labeling reaction significantly diminished the labeling. Altering the NPC1 sterol-sensing domain (SSD) with loss-of-function mutations (P692S and Y635C) severely reduced the extent of labeling. To further demonstrate the specificity of labeling, we show that …
The Caenorhabditis Elegans F-Box Protein Sel-10 Promotes Female Development And May Target Fem-1 And Fem-3 For Degradation By The Proteasome, Sibylle Jager, Hillel T. Schwartz, H. Robert Horvitz, Barbara Conradt
Dartmouth Scholarship
The Caenorhabditis elegans F-box protein SEL-10 and its human homolog have been proposed to regulate LIN-12 Notch signaling by targeting for ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation LIN-12 Notch proteins and SEL-12 PS1 presenilins, the latter of which have been implicated in Alzheimer's disease. We found that sel-10 is the same gene as egl-41, which previously had been defined by gain-of-function mutations that semidominantly cause masculinization of the hermaphrodite soma. Our results demonstrate that mutations causing loss-of-function of sel-10 also have masculinizing activity, indicating that sel-10 functions to promote female development. Genetically, sel-10 acts upstream of the genes fem-1, fem-2, and fem-3 and …

The Benefits And Costs Of City-County Unification: An Analysis Of City Of Albuquerque And Bernalillo County Finances, Lee A. Reynis
The Benefits And Costs Of City-County Unification: An Analysis Of City Of Albuquerque And Bernalillo County Finances, Lee A. Reynis
BBER Publications
The purpose of this report was to answer the question, "what are the costs and benefits of adopting the proposed unification charter?" After certain modifications were made to the research design, the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) did this study on behalf of the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Unification Commission. The report is organized into five sections: an in-depth analysis of major tax revenue sources; an examination of services provided to residents and businesses; a consideration of the question of subsidies ("who gets and who pays for services"); an examination of how total government costs may be affected by …
