Reticulospinal Neurons Receive Direct Spinobulbar Inputs During Locomotor Activity In Lamprey, James F. Einum, James T. Buchanan
Reticulospinal Neurons Receive Direct Spinobulbar Inputs During Locomotor Activity In Lamprey, James F. Einum, James T. Buchanan
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Reticulospinal neurons of the lamprey brain stem receive rhythmic input from the spinal cord during locomotor activity. The goal of the present study was to determine whether such spinal input has a direct component to reticulospinal neurons or depends on brain stem interneurons. To answer this question, an in vitro lamprey brain stem-spinal cord preparation was used with a diffusion barrier placed caudal to the obex, separating the experimental chamber into two baths. Locomotor activity was induced in the spinal cord by perfusion of D-glutamate or N-methyl-DL-aspartate into the spinal cord bath. The brain stem bath was first perfused …
A Visual Language For Animating Sketches, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay
A Visual Language For Animating Sketches, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present our research into visual languages for animating sketches. Animation is a rich mode of communication that is currently accessible to few. Simple animation systems exist, but severely restrict the types of motion that can be represented. Our field studies are demonstrating that would-be animators need to coordinate many objects moving in a variety of ways. The visual language described here allows a variety of motions to be defined with hand gestures, and gives visual feedback for coordination of events. This may open up computerized communication to users who think in dynamic visual images.

Cd4+ T Cells In The Pathogenesis Of Murine Ocular Toxoplasmosis, Fangli Lu, Shiguang Huang, Lloyd H. Kasper
Cd4+ T Cells In The Pathogenesis Of Murine Ocular Toxoplasmosis, Fangli Lu, Shiguang Huang, Lloyd H. Kasper
Dartmouth Scholarship
The role of CD4+ T cells in the pathogenesis of ocular toxoplasmosis was investigated in murine models utilizing inbred C57BL/6 mice deficient either in CD4+, CD8+, or B cells (μMT). Severe necrosis and inflammation with replicating parasites were observed in the eyes of control mice after primary ocular infection, and near-normal histology with few tachyzoites was observed in the eyes of mice immunized intraperitoneally with the avirulent ts-4 strain followed by intraocular challenge with the RH strain of Toxoplasma gondii. In contrast, mild inflammation without evidence of necrosis associated with increased parasite burdens were …

The Establishment Clause Gag Reflex, Frederick Mark Gedicks
The Establishment Clause Gag Reflex, Frederick Mark Gedicks
BYU Law Review
Some outcomes of Establishment Clause cases are better defended on realist rather than doctrinal grounds - that is, not on the basis of supposedly neutral principles, but by reference to some assessment of the kinds of church-state interactions that most Americans would tolerate. I call this the Establishment Clause gag reflex.
A constitutional gag reflex refers to the instinctive intellectual revulsion one might feel in response to the doctrine or holding of a case. For example, a contemporary judicial decision countenancing permanent denial of citizenship to racial minorities, or that denied to such minorities liberty or equality rights enjoyed by …

School Choice Litigation After Zelman And Locke, John A. Liekweg
School Choice Litigation After Zelman And Locke, John A. Liekweg
Journal of Catholic Education
In the past 2 years, the United States Supreme Court has decided two important cases that will bear directly on legislation and litigation involving school choice programs that provide financial aid to parents of children attending religious schools. Those cases are Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (2002) and Locke v. Davey (2004). The reasoning in Zelman, along with the litigation in the lower courts leading up to that decision, provide useful insights that should prove helpful in drafting school choice legislation and successfully defending it in court when challenged. The decision in Locke may have implications for litigation involving challenges to state …

Ondaatje's The English Patient And Altered States Of Narrative, Beverley Curran
Ondaatje's The English Patient And Altered States Of Narrative, Beverley Curran
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Beverley Curran argues in her paper "Ondaatje's The English Patient and Altered States of Narrative" that Ondaatje reconfigures in his novel the "romantic" figure of the father/artist as a clandestine lover, a drug addict, or an eccentric translator, all figures with dependencies. In The English Patient, the father or artist's sense of source, continuity, or authority are translated into a narrative which rejects the perverse captivity demanded of the lover and the translator by fidelity or by the tenets of realistic representation. Using sex, drugs, and translation, Ondaatje deranges both time and space to reconfigure the role of the artist …

Declaring Open Season: The Outbreak Of Violence Against Undocumented Immigrants By Vigilante Ranchers In South Texas., Sara A. Martinez
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Each year, over one million undocumented immigrants make their way across the U.S.-Mexican border in search of a better life. They are fleeing desperate situations like war, oppression, corruption, and starvation. Not only do undocumented immigrants making their way across the border have to fear dehydration and starvation, but they must also worry about death at the hands of Texas landowners. Texas ranchers often react with extreme measures in protecting their property. Ranch Rescue is an organization made up of volunteers who believe they should take measures into their own hands whenever there is a failure or refusal to act …

Zebra Mussels Affect Benthic Predator Foraging Success, Mark Beekey, D. J. Mccabe, I. E. Marsden
Biology Faculty Publications
The introduction of zebra mussels (Dreissena spp.) to North America has resulted in dramatic changes to the complexity of benthic habitats. Changes in habitat complexity may have profound effects on predator-prey interactions in aquatic communities. Increased habitat complexity may affect prey and predator dynamics by reducing encounter rates and foraging success. Zebra mussels form thick contiguous colonies on both hard and soft substrates. While the colonization of substrata by zebra mussels has generally resulted in an increase in both the abundance and diversity of benthic invertebrate communities, it is not well known how these changes affect the foraging efficiencies of …

Watershed Management Plans and Reports
A Watershed Management Plan (WMP) considers many aspects of water usage and functions, and coordinates them into a comprehensive plan for managing the activities that govern how our natural resources are utilized or viewed. A WMP is developed to provide direction and prioritize how resources are used for the management, protection, or restoration of a watershed. A watershed approach is ideal for managing water resources since they cross jurisdictions and political boundaries. Often this fluid nature of water is overlooked or taken for granted. Water flows over the ground and picks up pollutants before reaching a lake, stream, wetland, or …

Sustainable Water Supply In Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain
Sustainable Water Supply In Ireland, Liam Mccarton, Sean O'Hogain
Reports
Sustainable water technology is concerned with the complete range of technologies, techniques, products and processes that will enable humankind to reduce the impact of water production and water consumption on the environment and to establish a more sustainable mode of development. The concept of sustainable development has gained wide usage over the past 15 years in an attempt to balance development needs and environmental protection. The Brundtland Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future (1987) identified sustainable development as a global objective, which involved economic, social and environmental values. It defined sustainable development as ‘ …

Identification of species in natural populations has recently received increased attention with a number of investigators proposing rigorous methods for species delimitation. Morphologically conservative species (or species complexes) with deep phylogenetic histories (and limited gene flow) are likely to pose particular problems when attempting to delimit species, yet this is crucial to comparative studies of the geography of speciation. We apply two methods of species delimitation to an ancient group of lizards (genus Xantusia) that occur throughout southwestern North America. Mitochondrial cytochrome b and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 4 gene sequences were generated from samples taken throughout the geographic …

Pitchfork Bifurcations Of Invariant Manifolds, Jyoti Champanerkar
Pitchfork Bifurcations Of Invariant Manifolds, Jyoti Champanerkar
Dissertations
In a parameter dependent, dynamical system, when the qualitative structure of the solutions changes due to a small change in the parameter, the system is said to have undergone a bifurcation. Bifurcations have been classified on the basis of the topological properties of fixed points and invariant manifolds of dynamical systems. A pitchfork bifurcation in R is said to have occurred when a stable fixed point becomes unstable and two new stable fixed points, separated by the unstable fixed point come into existence.
In this thesis, a pitchfork bifurcation of an (in- 1)-dimensional invariant submani-fold of a dynamical system in …

Assessing risks associated with the release of metals into the environment and managing remedial activities requires simulation tools that depict speciation and risk with accurate mechanistic models and well-defined transport parameters. Such tools need to address the following processes: (1) aqueous speciation, (2) distribution mechanisms, (3) transport, and (4) ecological risk. The primary objective of this research is to develop a simulation tool that accounts for these processes. Speciation in the aqueous phase can be assessed with geochemical equilibrium models, such as MINEQL+. Furthermore, metal distribution can be addressed mechanistically. Studies with Pb sorption to amorphous aluminum (HAG), iron (HFO), …
