Effects Of Video Modeling On Skill Acquisition In Learning The Golf Swing, Joshua L. Smith Dec 2004

Effects Of Video Modeling On Skill Acquisition In Learning The Golf Swing, Joshua L. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of video modeling on skill acquisition in learning the golf swing. One-hundred-eight college students participated in this study. All participants were pre-tested via videotaping to determine initial skill level. The pre-test videotaping was analyzed using DartTrainer software. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of three groups (1) control (2) single-view or (3) multi-view. Participants in the control group viewed a compact disc (CD) with a putting demonstration repeated 40 times. The participants in the single-view group viewed a CD with a front view only demonstration repeated 40 times of …

Identification Of Proteins Involved In Chloroplast Dna Replication, Matthew G. Lassen Dec 2004

Identification Of Proteins Involved In Chloroplast Dna Replication, Matthew G. Lassen

Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1

Chloroplast nucleoids (ct-nucleoids) are DNA/protein complexes involved in compacting the chloroplast genome, and may play a role in regulating DNA replication. Ct-nucleoids were isolated from young soybean plants and separated by 2-D gel electrophoresis. Gel spots were excised and analyzed by MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry, resulting in several protein identifications. The proteins identified all have functions unrelated to DNA replication. While some of these proteins may be due to contamination, it is possible that some of these proteins are dual-functional, playing direct roles in the regulation of DNA replication.

Chapter 2

A 28 kDa soybean protein was isolated by …

Type 3 Functional Response Of Mice To Gypsy Moth Pupae: Is It Stabilizing?, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld, Clive G. Jones Dec 2004

Type 3 Functional Response Of Mice To Gypsy Moth Pupae: Is It Stabilizing?, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld, Clive G. Jones

Publications

We conducted field experiments in 2002 and 2003 to determine whether the functional response of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus ) to gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar ) pupae is decelerating (e.g. type 2) or accelerating (e.g. type 3) at low pupal density. In both experiments, live gypsy moth pupae were deployed in June (prior to the appearance of natural pupae) at densities of approximately 1, 8, and 35 pupae per mouse home range in oak-forest grids in upstate New York and monitored over 10 days for signs of predation. Pupae were deployed 1.5-m high on tree boles in 2002, whereas in …

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong Dec 2004

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This paper argues that Foucault’s proposed positive program of practical critique in his later work, which he calls ‘critical ontology,’ provides a response to his critics. The goal of critical ontology is to “separate out, from the contingency that has made us what we are, the possibility of no longer being, doing or thinking what we are, do, or think.” However, it may be objected that, since Foucault emphasizes going beyond contingencies, it appears that he is guilty of committing a kind of genetic fallacy. I will defend Foucault against such a charge by using concepts and practices in child …

Preferences For Processes: The Process/Product Distinction And The Regulation Of Consumer Choice, Douglas A. Kysar Dec 2004

Preferences For Processes: The Process/Product Distinction And The Regulation Of Consumer Choice, Douglas A. Kysar

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This Article examines a conceptual distinction between product-related information (such as whether a consumer good threatens to harm its user) and process-related information (such as whether a good’s production harmed workers, animals, or the environment) that has appeared in various guises within international trade law; domestic environmental, health, and safety regulation; and constitutional commercial speech jurisprudence. This process/product distinction tends to dismiss information concerning processes as unworthy of attention from consumers or regulators, at least so long as the processes at issue do not manifest themselves in the physical or compositional characteristics of resulting end products. Proponents have offered the …

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Since the beginning of time, God has had a special relationship with humans. After the creation of the heavens and the earth, God bestowed the rule of the land and sea to His most favored creation, man. Although Adam and Eve sinned against God, He still bestowed favor on them. He banished them from the Garden of Eden for their sin but gave them clothing (Genesis 3:21). When Cain killed Abel, God banned Cain from the land of his parents but put a mark upon him that he not …

Physical, Social, And Documentary Genocide: The Monacan Indian Nation V. The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Michael C. Cundiff

Theses & Honors Papers

Basic human rights for all citizens, is a standard in Western society which is often taken for granted. When we look back at our past it becomes clear that this standard has not always been the norm. The key to assuring that the future will continue to hold promise and opportunity for all is to remain ever conscious of our collective history and what it has to teach us about where we are headed. This research examines prejudice, racism and bigotry and the "trickle down" effect that these fear based traits can have on all strata of society. By examining …

Respiratory Symptoms In Relation To Residential Coal Burning And Environmental Tobacco Smoke Among Early Adolescents In Wuhan, China: A Cross-Sectional Study, C. Anderson Johnson, Jiang Xia, Päivi M. Salo, Yan Li, Grace E. Kissling, Edward L. Avol, Chunhong Liu, Stephanie J. London Dec 2004

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Background

Cigarette smoking and coal burning are the primary sources of indoor air pollution in Chinese households. However, effects of these exposures on Chinese children's respiratory health are not well characterized.

Methods

Seventh grade students (N = 5051) from 22 randomly selected schools in the greater metropolitan area of Wuhan, China, completed an in-class self-administered questionnaire on their respiratory health and home environment.

Results

Coal burning for cooking and/or heating increased odds of wheezing with colds [odds ratio (OR) = 1.57, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07–2.29] and without colds (OR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.05–1.97). For smoking in the home, …

Impact Of Microfinance Programs On Children's Education: Do The Gender Of The Borrower And The Delivery Model Matter?, Nathalie Holvoet Dec 2004

Impact Of Microfinance Programs On Children's Education: Do The Gender Of The Borrower And The Delivery Model Matter?, Nathalie Holvoet

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This article highlights the effects particular features of microfinance programs have on childhood education. Using data from a South India household survey, the article examines how microfinance impacts schooling and literacy, how credit enters the household, and who brings it in. Regression results show that, in the case of direct bank-borrower credit delivery, it does not matter whether credit enters the household through the mother or the father. However, large differences occur when mothers obtain credit through women's groups. Analysis indicates that combined financial and social-group intermediation leads to higher educational inputs and outputs, mainly for girls. Individual interviewis with …
