Growth Of Stygobitic (Orconectes Australis Packardi) And Epigean (Orconectes Cristavarius) Crayfishes Maintained In Laboratory Conditions, Ann-Simone Cooper, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

This study reports on maintenance and growth of the cave crayfish, Orconectes australis packardi, and the epigean crayfish, Orconectes cristavarius, with laboratory conditions for 1 and 2 years. The O. a. packardi survived well compared to the O. cristavarius in captivity. The poor survival of the epigean species was probably due to unsuitable conditions. The epigean as well as the cave crayfish molted and grew in captivity, but without any significant difference in molt frequency between species. In the first year, total body length was obtained to assay growth, whereas in the second year the more accurate measure …

“Every Book…Has Been Read Through” The Brooklyn Saints And Harper's Family Library, Lorin K. Hansen

BYU Studies

On February 4, 1846, two groups of Latter-day Saints in the United States began their emigration out of the United States. The main body of the Church was leaving from Nauvoo, Illinois, under the leadership of Brigham Young, going overland to the West. The same day, also under instructions from Brigham Young. Samuel Brannan led a group from New York aboard the ship Brooklyn, going by sea around Cape Horn to San Francisco Bay.

Long Polar Fimbriae Contribute To Colonization By Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Vivo, Dianna M. Jordan, Nancy Cornick, Alfredo G. Torres, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, James B. Kaper, Harley W. Moon

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The contribution of long polar fimbriae to intestinal colonization by Escherichia coli O157:H7 was evaluated in sheep, conventional pigs, and gnotobiotic piglets. E. coli O157:H7 strains with lpfA1 and lpfA2 mutated were recovered in significantly lower numbers and caused fewer attachment and effacement lesions than the parent strain.

Energetics, Predation, And Ration Affect Size-Dependent Growth And Mortality Of Fish During Winter, James E. Garvey, Kenneth G. Ostrand, David H. Wahl Oct 2004

Energetics, Predation, And Ration Affect Size-Dependent Growth And Mortality Of Fish During Winter, James E. Garvey, Kenneth G. Ostrand, David H. Wahl

Publications

Winter temperatures may reduce energy costs for ectotherms. However, variable mid-temperate and low-latitude winters may interact with scaling of size, metabolism, and energy reserves to cause energy deficits and require trade-offs between foraging and predation. A dynamic optimization model explored how ration, fall fat, and both non- and size-selective predation influenced foraging (i.e., fast or forage) and energy allocation (i.e., length or fat) decisions that maximize winter survival of age-0 largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). During a mid-latitude (38° N) winter, a pond experiment in which age-0 fish occurred with or without adult conspecific predators tested a subset of …

The Role Of Adrenomedullin In The Cardiovascular System, Louisa Yuk-Fung Wong, Bernard Man-Yung Cheung, Carol Yuk-Yin Li, Fai Tang Oct 2004

The Role Of Adrenomedullin In The Cardiovascular System, Louisa Yuk-Fung Wong, Bernard Man-Yung Cheung, Carol Yuk-Yin Li, Fai Tang

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Adrenomedullin (AM) is a 52 amino acid peptide that was first isolated from human pheochromocytoma. Subsequently, AM and its receptors are found to be distributed widely in the body, including the cardiovascular system. It belongs to a family of peptides that include calcitonin gene-related peptide. In blood vessels, AM causes vasodilation and regulates proliferation. It interacts closely with nitric oxide and has a role in the pathophysiology of hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, cardiac and renal failure. A non-peptide analogue of AM or gene therapy may be of potential therapeutic use. The role of AM in septicaemic shock also merits further …

Etsu Today - Fall 2004, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

The legislative session that concluded in the spring of 2004 brought much-needed hope and some tangible results to higher education in Tennessee. Realizing that work still must be done, we are greatly appreciative of the salary improvements that were approved for our faculty and staff. ETSU also succeeded in acquiring some $11 million in capital outlay funding to renovate the old Sherrod Library, providing critically needed space for our College of Nursing. We have the largest nursing enrollment in Tennessee, and we have plans to increase enrollment in the B.S.N. program by 50 percent, a major step in our continued …

A Brief Exploration Of Space: Some Observations On Law School Architecture, Robert H. Jerry Ii

UF Law Faculty Publications

The nature of the space in which we work, teach, and study is important. The design of our surroundings affects our attitudes, moods, self-esteem, efficiency, and sense of community. For our students, space makes a difference in the quality of the learning experience. It is possible to teach and learn in deficient space, but it is easier to teach and learn when both faculty and students are comfortable, happy, and not distracted by the inconveniences and annoyances of a poorly designed environment. Inadequate space prevents us from achieving all of which we are capable, thereby diminishing our productivity, creativity, and …

Biomedical Science Journals In The Arab World, Ghazi O. Tadmouri

Saudi Medical Journal

Medieval Arab scientists established the basis of medical practice and gave important attention to the publication of scientific results. At present, modern scientific publishing in the Arab world is in its developmental stage. Arab biomedical journals are less than 300, most of which are published in Egypt, Lebanon, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Yet, many of these journals do not have on-line access or are indexed in major bibliographic databases. The majority of indexed journals, however, do not have a stable presence in the popular PubMed database and their indexes are discontinued since 2001. The exposure of Arab biomedical …

The Florida Bonneted Bat, Eumops Floridanus (Chiroptera: Molossidae): Distribution, Morphometrics, Systematics, And Ecology, Robert M. Timm, Hugh H. Genoways Oct 2004

The Florida Bonneted Bat, Eumops Floridanus (Chiroptera: Molossidae): Distribution, Morphometrics, Systematics, And Ecology, Robert M. Timm, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

A review and reappraisal of bats of the genus Eumops (Chiroptera: Molossidae) reveals that considerable geographic variation is present in the bonneted bat, E. glaucinus; it is a complex consisting of >1 species. Bonneted bats in Florida are significantly larger than those in all other populations, and have proportionally shorter and deeper basisphenoid pits, the glenoid fossa is broadly triangular with rounded apices, and bacular shape differs from that in other populations. Additionally, bonneted bats in Florida have a broader palate than bats from populations in South America. Given these differences, the correct name for both Pleistocene and Recent …

Historical Observations Of Humpback And Blue Whales In The North Atlantic Ocean: Clues To Migratory Routes And Possibly Additional Feeding Grounds, Randall Reeves, Tim D. Smith, Phillip Clapham, Elizabeth Josephson, Gillian Woolmer

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The seasonal distributions of humpback and blue whales (Megaptera novaeangliae and Balaenoptera musculus, respectively) in the North Atlantic Ocean are not fully understood. Although humpbacks have been studied intensively in nearshore or coastal feeding and breeding areas, their migratory movements between these areas have been largely inferred. Blue whales have only been studied intensively along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and their seasonal occurrence and movements elsewhere in the North Atlantic are poorly known. We investigated the historical seasonal distributions of these two species using sighting and catch data extracted from American 18th and …
