Innovations in Math Technology
The internet has become widely available, and tools for mathematical computation on the net have now appeared. The authors used webMathematica software to create interactive web pages which allow students and faculty to compute and visualize results directly from a web browser. The nature of the innovation, its significance for instruction, and some implications for student understanding are discussed.

Technology For Humanitarian Action, Kevin M. Cahill, M.D.
Technology For Humanitarian Action, Kevin M. Cahill, M.D.
Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs
Humanitarian workers around the world struggle under dangerous conditions. Yet many do not have the technological tools readily available elsewhere to help them realize their mission to provide essential services and save lives.
This book, the fruit of a historic conference, is a practical guide to current technologies that can help relief and humanitarian aid workers succeed. Designed to facilitate needed technology transfer to the humanitarian sector, the essays focus on areas where technology is underused and predict where new technological advances may be applied to relief efforts.
The essays cover essential areas: communications technology and infrastructure support and security. …

A Comparison Of Behavioural Change In Drosophila During Exposure To Thermal Stress, Angel G. Fasolo, Robert A. Krebs
A Comparison Of Behavioural Change In Drosophila During Exposure To Thermal Stress, Angel G. Fasolo, Robert A. Krebs
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
In order to understand how adaptive tolerance to stress has evolved, we compared related species and populations of Drosophila for a variety of fitness relevant traits while flies directly experienced the stress. Two main questions were addressed. First, how much variation exists in the frequency of both courtship and mating among D. melanogaster, D. simulans, and D. mojavensis when each are exposed to a range of temperatures? Second, how does variation in these same behaviours compare among four geographically isolated populations of D. mojavensis, a desert species with a well defined ecology? Our hierarchical study demonstrated that mating success under …

Litigated Learning And The Limits Of Law, Michael R. Heise
Litigated Learning And The Limits Of Law, Michael R. Heise
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Brown’s legacy and what it says about the efficacy of litigation as a vehicle to achieve social change mean different things to different people. Although popular mythology emphasizes Brown’s critical role in securing equal educational opportunity, careful reflection reveals that the decision’s legacy is anything but clear. A narrow focus on school desegregation suggests Brown’s legacy is aptly characterized as one of unfulfilled promise. A broader focus that extends to include subsequent equal educational opportunity activity such as the school finance litigation movement, however, casts positive light on Brown’s legacy. More important than completing interpretations of Brown’s legacy is what …

Inner Turmoil: Redefining The Individual And The Conflict Of Rights Between Woman And Fetus Created By The Prenatal Protection Act, Michelle Haynes
Inner Turmoil: Redefining The Individual And The Conflict Of Rights Between Woman And Fetus Created By The Prenatal Protection Act, Michelle Haynes
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
A fetus should not be labeled an "individual" if it is only going to receive some of the protection from third parties to which an individual is entitled. Instead, this Comment urges the Texas Legislature to repeal the criminal penalties portion of the Prenatal Protection Act and replace it with a criminal statute that protects a woman's right to carry her pregnancy to term and provides enhancements for injuries to a pregnant woman or alternatively, a criminal statute that protects the potential life of the unborn fetus as an "individual" and does not provide exceptions for the mother's conduct when …
