Remote Monitoring Of Repository Integrity Using Passive Seismic Arrays, Barbara Luke, Evangelos Yfantis

Once radioactive waste is emplaced in the repository, the challenge of monitoring the continued integrity of the excavated openings (e.g., emplacement drifts) escalates tremendously. We envision a seismic monitoring array installed on the surface at Yucca Mountain, which operates automatically to monitor repository opening stability in the long term. The objective is to monitor and validate the structural integrity of the emplacement drifts through identifying and localizing rock falls that could compromise drift access, hinder waste retrievability, and potentially reduce the effective life of waste canisters. Curvature-Induced Defect Unbinding In Toroidal Geometries, Mark Bowick, David R. Nelson, Alex Travesset

Physics - All Scholarship

Toroidal templates such as vesicles with hexatic bond orientational order are discussed. The total energy including disclination charges is explicitly computed for hexatic order embedded in a toroidal geometry. Related results apply for tilt or nematic order on the torus in the one Frank constant approximation. Although there is no topological necessity for defects in the ground state, we find that excess disclination defects are nevertheless energetically favored for fat torii or moderate vesicle sizes. Some experimental consequences are discussed.

The problem of determining a current density confined to a volume from measurements of the magnetic and electric fields it produces exterior to that volume is known to have nonunique solutions. Despite the nonuniqueness of the inversion we show that one may nevertheless uniquely determine certain moments of the vector spherical harmonic expansion of the current. It is demonstrated that the determination of these moments allows for the unique inversion of a current density confined to a spherical shell. A multiphase DC/DC converter with voltage-mode hysteretic control and instantaneous current sharing functionality method and circuit. The disclosed method and circuit provides independent output voltage regulation and phases current regulation for the converter in two separate loops; one of which is concerned with voltage regulation preferably hysteretic regulation and the other which is concerned with phase current regulation. In one embodiment, each phase in the DC/DC converter is driven by a frequency divided signal derived directly from the output voltage ripple so that each phase has a switching frequency equal to the output voltage ripple frequency divided by the number …

Until recently, the question of whether §43 of the Lanham Act prevented the unaccredited copying of an un-copyrighted work was an open one. However, in Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox, the United States Supreme Court speaks directly on this issue, emphasizing the distinction between copyright and trademark protections and cautioning against "misuse or overextension" of trademark protections into areas traditionally covered by copyright or patent law. This iBrief assesses the importance of such line drawing and explores the implications of this decision.

Kajian sederhana ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan dampak penggunaan SBI dan rencana penggunaan T-Bills sebagai piranti operasi pasar terbuka dalam kaitannya dengan pengendalian inflasi. Hasil kajian ini memperlihatkan bahwa kebijakan moneter dalam periode penggunaan SBI sebagai piranti OPT tidak sepenuhnya sesuai dengan pendapat para kaum monetaris yang meyakini bahwa kebijakan moneter ketat akan dengan berkelanjutan mampu mengendalikan inflasi. Studi ini memperlihatkan bahwa kebijakan moneter ketat yang diterapkan Bank Indonesia dalam periode SBI ini ternyata dalam proses dinamisnya dapat memberikan tekanan kembali bagi meningkatnya inflasi di periode-periode selanjutnya. Produk reksa dana (mutual fund) akhir-akhir ini mendapat cukup banyak perhatian dengan perkembangannya yang fenomenal khususnya dalam 12 bulan terakhir2 . Perkembangan fenomenal ini tercermin dari peningkatan jumlah nasabah (pemegang unit penyertaan reksa dana), dana kelolaan, dan produk reksa dana yang beredar di pasar3 . Sampai dengan bulan Desember 2002, jumlah account investor reksa dana tercatat sebesar 125.820 account (143,2%, y-o-y), sementara dana kelolaan secara tahunan melonjak 252,8% menjadi Rp56,1 triliun. Pertumbuhan ekonomi di triwulan III-2003 diperkirakan membaik hingga mencapai 4,14%(yoy). Meningkatnya kinerja ekspor dan investasi memberikan sumbangan yang positif terhadap pertumbuhan PDB triwulan III-2003. Secara sektoral, pertumbuhan positif terjadi di seluruh sektor ekonomi, dengan sumbangan terbesar berasal dari sektor industri pengolahan, sektor perdagangan, dan sektor pengangkutan.
