Unidirectional Cordic For Efficient Computation Of Trigonometric And Hyperbolic Functions, Satish Ravichandran Oct 2003

Unidirectional Cordic For Efficient Computation Of Trigonometric And Hyperbolic Functions, Satish Ravichandran

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

CORDIC (Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer) is an iterative algorithm to compute values of trigonometric, logarithmic and transcendental functions by performing vector rotations, which can be implemented with only shift and add operations in a digital system. CORDIC algorithms are extensively used in the areas of digital signal processing, digital image processing and artificial neural networks. A new technique, named unidirectional CORDIC, for efficient computation of trigonometric and hyperbolic functions is presented in this thesis. In the conventional CORDIC algorithm, the vector rotations are performed in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions, but in the unidirectional CORDIC the vectors are rotated only …

"Angels Carrying Savage Weapons:" Uses Of The Bible In Contemporary Horror Films, Mary Ann Beavis Oct 2003

"Angels Carrying Savage Weapons:" Uses Of The Bible In Contemporary Horror Films, Mary Ann Beavis

Journal of Religion & Film

As one of the great repositories of supernatural lore in Western culture, it is not surprising that the Bible is often featured in horror films. This paper will attempt to address this oversight by identifying, analyzing and classifying some uses of the Bible in horror films of the past quarter century. Some portrayals of the Bible which emerge from the examination of these films include: (1) the Bible as the divine word of truth with the power to drive away evil and banish fear; (2) the Bible as the source or inspiration of evil, obsession and insanity; (3) the Bible …

Reassessing The Matrix/Reloaded, Julien R. Fielding Oct 2003

Reassessing The Matrix/Reloaded, Julien R. Fielding

Journal of Religion & Film

Much has been written about Larry and Andy Wachowski's film The Matrix and on practically every angle: from philosophical precedents to the realities of artificial intelligence. Religious scholars, too, have thrown their hats into the academic ring, expounding on the Gnostic, Buddhist and Christian aspects found therein. But as many have discovered, the Wachowski brothers are syncretists, pulling bits from here and there and then mixing it all together in a science fiction-martial arts stew. They do this so thoroughly that when one tries to impose a singular religious paradigm on top of the film(s), slotting in the characters one-by-one, …

Any Gods Out There? Perceptions Of Religion From Star Wars And Star Trek, John S. Schultes Oct 2003

Any Gods Out There? Perceptions Of Religion From Star Wars And Star Trek, John S. Schultes

Journal of Religion & Film

Hollywood films and religion have an ongoing rocky relationship, especially in the realm of science fiction. A brief comparison study of the two giants of mainstream sci-fi, Star Wars and Star Trek reveals the differing attitudes toward religion expressed in the genre. Star Trek presents an evolving perspective, from critical secular humanism to begrudging personalized faith, while Star Wars presents an ambiguous mythological foundation for mystical experience that is in more ways universal.

Bewitching The Box Office: Harry Potter And Religious Controversy, Rachel L. Wagner Oct 2003

Bewitching The Box Office: Harry Potter And Religious Controversy, Rachel L. Wagner

Journal of Religion & Film

The cultural phenomenon produced in recent years by the Harry Potter books and films has sparked outrage among critics and avid devotion from supporters. This article examines the debate through the implementation of three dichotomies that help to define the approaches people typically take to the Harry Potter stories: 1) fantasy vs. reality, 2) good versus evil, and 3) secular versus religious. As I demonstrate through an examination of these dichotomies and their application, the public debate about Harry Potter encourages us to reexamine the import and meaning of the separation of church and state.

Symbolic Power And Religious Impotence In Paul Verhoeven's Spetters, Richard S. Ascough Oct 2003

Symbolic Power And Religious Impotence In Paul Verhoeven's Spetters, Richard S. Ascough

Journal of Religion & Film

This article explores the religious symbolism in the Dutch film Spetters (1980), by controversial director Paul Verhoeven. An examination of the symbolic referents in the film, in particular the use of stereotypical male power symbols, shows how expectations of power dynamics are reversed in the lives of the main characters. The film's embedded message, played out in Verhoeven's later films, concerns the impotence of Christianity in the modern world. Questions concerning theodicy are not satisfactorily answered through traditional religious ideas. God, it seems, has abandoned the human race.

How Reading Recovery Teaches The Five Essential Elements Of Reading Instruction And More, Mary Anne Doyle, Salli Forbes Oct 2003

How Reading Recovery Teaches The Five Essential Elements Of Reading Instruction And More, Mary Anne Doyle, Salli Forbes

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

In 1997 Congress called for the director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), in consultation with the Secretary of Education, to convene a national panel to assess the status of research-based knowledge, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching children to read (NICHD, 2000a, p. 1). The resulting 14- member National Reading Panel (NRP or Panel) included reading researchers, representatives of colleges of education, educational administrators, a classroom teacher, a parent, and a medical doctor (Yatvin, 2002). The work completed by the NRP involved identification and meta-analyses of the experimental and quasi-experimental research literature …

Four Common Misconceptions About Copyright Piracy, Peter K. Yu Oct 2003

Four Common Misconceptions About Copyright Piracy, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Copyright piracy is one of the most difficult, yet important, transnational problems in the twenty-first century. Although legal literature has discussed copyright piracy extensively, commentators rarely offer a "grand unified theory" on this global problem. Rather, they give nuanced analyses, discussing the many aspects of the problem-political, social, economic, cultural, and historical.

This nuanced discussion, however, is missing in the current public debate. To capture the readers' emotion and to generate support for proposed legislative and executive actions, the debate often oversimplifies the complicated picture by overexagerrating a particular aspect of the piracy problem or by offering an abbreviated, easy-to-understand, …

Il-7 Enhances Peripheral T Cell Reconstitution After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation., Onder Alpdogan, Stephanie J Muriglan, Jeffrey M Eng, Lucy M Willis, Andrew S Greenberg, Barry J Kappel, Marcel R M Van Den Brink

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

We used clinically relevant murine allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) models to study the mechanisms by which IL-7 administration can improve posttransplant peripheral T cell reconstitution. After transplant we could distinguish two populations of mature donor T cells: (a) alloreactive T cells with decreased expression of CD127 (IL-7 receptor alpha chain) and (b) nonalloreactive T cells, which express CD127 and undergo homeostatic proliferation. IL-7 administration increased the homeostatic proliferation of nonalloreactive T cells, but had no effect on alloreactive T cells and the development of graft-versus-host disease. Allogeneic transplant of purified hematopoietic stem cells and adoptive transfer of thymocytes into …

International Royalty And Continental Shelf Limits: Emerging Issues For The Canadian Offshore, Aldo Chircop, Bruce Marchand Oct 2003

International Royalty And Continental Shelf Limits: Emerging Issues For The Canadian Offshore, Aldo Chircop, Bruce Marchand

Dalhousie Law Journal

Article 82 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982, provides a novel obligation in international law that is likely to become operative within the decade. It establishes an international royalty on production from the utilization of non-living resources (such as oil and gas) on the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, but within the outer limit of a coastal state's jurisdiction. Producing states will have an obligation to make payments or contributions in kind that are calculated on the basis of an incremental rate applicable as from the sixth year of production and reaching a …

Effective And Efficient Regulation In Nova Scotia, J Marshall Burgess Oct 2003

Effective And Efficient Regulation In Nova Scotia, J Marshall Burgess

Dalhousie Law Journal

Effective and efficient regulation of the oil and gas industry on the East Coast of Canada is a top priority of the federal and provincial governments. Ever since oil and gas exploration and development began in this region, stakeholders and others have urged regulators to address and remedy this issue. This paper reviews how governments have responded first in the onshore context, and then in the offshore. Issues that regulators need to address are identified and legislative, regulatory, and administrative changes which have been made and are proposed are reviewed. Finally, the author reflects on possible future developments and the …

Effective And Efficient Regulation Of The Offshore Oil Industry: The 2001 White Rose Public Review Process, Peter O'Flaherty, Matthew Clarke

Dalhousie Law Journal

Section 44(2)(b) of the provincial and federal Canada-Newfoundland Atlantic Accord Implementation Acts provides for a public review of proposed developments of petroleum resources as part of the existing regulatory approval process for the Newfoundland Offshore Area. To date, public reviews have been conducted for three offshore oil developments: Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose. This paper examines the effectiveness and efficiency of the public review process for the White Rose Project. The author concludes that the review process was effective in successfully gathering public input and reporting this information to the CNOPB. Despite CNOPB's failure to accept many of the …

Provincial Entitlement To Gas Trunk Line Ownership - Enforceability And Constitutionality, Dufferin Harper Oct 2003

Provincial Entitlement To Gas Trunk Line Ownership - Enforceability And Constitutionality, Dufferin Harper

Dalhousie Law Journal

The author discusses the interpretation of section 40 of the Nova Scotia Accord Act (Canada) and the Nova Scotia Accord Act (Nova Scotia). The section provides that the Government of Nova Scotia be given "a reasonable opportunity" to acquire on a "commercial basis" up to a fifty percent ownership in the Nova Scotia trunkine in certain circumstances. He points out that even though the dispute between the Federal and Provincial governments regarding the ownership of the offshore appears to be on hold, the issue is relevant to the application of section 40.

Occupational Health And Safety: The New Regime For The East Coast Offshore, Susan E. Gover Oct 2003

Occupational Health And Safety: The New Regime For The East Coast Offshore, Susan E. Gover

Dalhousie Law Journal

The Governments of Canada, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador are moving to enshrine existing offshore occupational health and safety (OHS) practices into the Atlantic Accord legislation governing the regulation of petroleum-related activity off the eastern coast of Canada. The proposed OHS amendments discussed in this paper are intended to provide a comprehensive legal framework to achieve the same kind of protection for offshore workers that onshore workers currently enjoy. Application of occupational health and safety laws in the offshore will be clarified so that these amendments, and not other federal or provincial OHS laws, will apply to any workplace …
